24 HOURS OF VAN LIFE IN PORTUGAL | First Impressions

We're literally gonna have to go back on ourselves like nearly the whole way. We have made it into Portugal. We have just driven through and it was a bit of a different experience to what we expected. We thought we were driving up and we thought maybe there's like a border thing or a sign and no we just ended up like dropping into a national park that had like a car park and a cafe so I thought we took the wrong turn in because we are literally like going through a sea of people and then we turned it turned out that they were going to the waterfall that we planned to go to on the way through. It was absolutely packed so we just decided to kind of carry on through. We're a little bit further down the road now and we just pulled over and this is the view. Some windy roads just yeah I feel a bit queasy. Anyway yeah we've come to this lake and we've been able to find a spot but it's busy isn't it? Yeah it looks dead nice down there but we're gonna have to find a way to get down unless you feel like ziplining. I mean you cannot complain there's literally a little beach there. Just bothered about getting in now. Okay that's the quickest we've just got into Aquini but we're gonna get in this water ASAP. So we've been into the water and cooled off and it's so nice it's so warm and it's actually really nice to not have salt water on you so I feel like I've just had like a little bath. How do I look? Really nice. Are you gonna do a full circuit round it? Yeah I'm doing the whole thing. I'm knackered. That's why we got the goggles so we could practice. It's so hard it's like a different level of fitness. We're so shocked at how warm the water is I thought we'd have to wait until like now when the sun's really up but um it's so warm and I'm pretty much getting like nearly dry from that but yeah we're like the only ones here this morning and none of the crowds are coming to get on the pedlos or anything like that it's just it's so peaceful. How are you? This is too nice. I know I feel like this is not this is not what I expected of Portugal whatsoever it's so much better. The boats and the jet skis have come out so I think that's our cue to leave. Yeah I mean it's causing a really big big surf now. Yeah we're gonna go try and find a waterfall. I'm ready to go find a waterfall I hope there's water in it. Yeah might be a bit there. So it's just which one is it? We're doing cascada de rajada just the two kilometre walk to get up to the top. Hold on Mitch let's fast forward a little bit. We're literally gonna have to go back on ourselves like nearly the whole way. Anyway we'll get to that bit later. Yeah after what we saw yesterday with how busy that other waterfall was and it was kind of set up for tourists we thought doing a little bit of a walk one will be nice to get a walk in and two hopefully means it'll deter more people away. I've decided that we might move here. This is so nice. I'm a little bit concerned because everyone seems to be driving past us which is making me think that there's an easier car park in Spaceland. I think it's for the more popular waterfalls. Yeah we think there's two on this route and you can walk to one and then the other one is further and more popular. So I hope we've not made a bad decision. Why do we always pick the walks that are climbing? I know. Martha took us the wrong way. Surprise surprise. Yeah me with the phone in my hand Yeah went the complete wrong way. Apparently it's well signposted so we wouldn't get lost but here we are. It's got to be up there then. Are you joking? No. I literally just said that. We've just walked back on ourselves. There's the road and then how do people... What? I'm not. You said it was well signposted. Everyone at google reviews said no some people are just more stupid than others. Oh yeah right. You genuinely couldn't write what's going on right now. We've ended up so wrong it's unbelievable. We've just been walking through this. There's no one else around. It's literally just like thorn bushes. My legs are scraped and then we're trying to get to the waterfall which is like over there and we just realized how high up we are. There's like 150 meter drop off to get down to the waterfall from here in the space of like 200 meters so we're not gonna be able to walk down that way. We're literally gonna have to go back on ourselves like nearly the whole way and we thought we were going to be early and it was only two kilometers so we'll be the crowds. It's now 12. All right back we go then. How the hell have we gone that wrong? That's the viewpoint down there. I don't even think it was even that far but holy... I don't know if it's a mirage or not but I think I can hear water but I'm not sure. It might just be the wind. We just worked out that we left at 11. It's caught to 1. I think it's definitely water. You can hear water. Yeah okay you can hear it too. That means I'm not going crazy. It actually leads to the waterfall. Wait, is that the waterfall? At least we made it. We had to traverse over these rocks to get to the waterfall. Martha's a little bit underwhelmed. We've had a casualty. I'll show you in a second but I feel like this is what you expect from a waterfall in the summer. I think it's really nice. There's only one group of people here so sort got it to ourselves. Martha's not happy. Show them your casualty then Marth. Oh my head's in the way. I don't know what I've done to my arse. Why? Is it still stinging? Yeah. It only took us two and a quarter hours to get here. Doing two kilometres apparently. Yeah but we made it and the water's nice and cold. Are you gonna get in? I don't know. Yeah you got to. You can't walk all this way and not get in. I'm not sure. You happy we got here now? Yeah it's not too cold. I don't know if we've just become more accustomed to cold water. I think we have a bit. So this is where we could see when we were up on the ridgeline at the top. Literally the top row of trees is where we can see that like rock sticking out there. Yeah and that's where we were because I thought I followed google maps for some reason. I always follow war trails for stuff like this but for some reason this time I followed google maps just because of how touristy it is around here. I thought it'd be pretty simple to get to. I'll take it back. It is well signed post if you're not an idiot from the start. Listen it's the first mistake I've ever made in my life. But you're not gonna hear the rest of it from me. You do realise that. And it's gonna be proof. Wait did you say first mistake? Yeah. Absolutely not. You can do one there. Look it's nice and level. It's just a nice a nice walk back. Oh look Mitch you just stood conveniently right by another sign. We're gonna have to look back at this footage of what we took Did you film when we were here? Because I took a photo on my phone here. We loitered here for a second and then walked up there the complete wrong way and somehow missed these signs of where we should have gone. And looking up there to see which one it is. Oh yeah you can. You could miss But we did so. I can't believe that. Oh well. Because I took a photo of this because of all the grapes. But at least we're back at the van now. That's awful. Right yeah okay we're back. It is exactly, that's wrong, half two. We left at 11am. I'll have to show the route on my phone. Right so this is where we started. Down here. We walked up here. Ended up going up this road until I got to about here. Crossed across when we went off road up to about here. Walked all the way up. This is where we realised that we'd gone wrong. Then walked all the way down there back. So we were walking side by side with the actual trail up to the waterfall and then back down the main trail. So from there was 5.4 kilometres. So walking up there was probably another three kilometres. So altogether we've walked like eight and a half kilometres on what should have been two kilometres. Yeah two kilometres up, two kilometres down. Don't even try. We're in Braga now and it's five o'clock. We just found a free pot for nights but we're not going to stay in Braga though are we? We don't think. We don't, no we don't think. We're going to go and have a walk around see what Braga's got to offer. We've been having a walk around Braga now for the past like hour or so. It's really nice here. I can imagine it's really nice in the day, like full day. I mean now it's ten to seven so it's quieting down a bit but yeah we went around the gardens and had a look at the cathedral and everything looks really nice. Everyone's got, there's like a gelato shop on every corner which isn't good for the budget so I have to keep myself away from them. First impressions of Portugal? They've been really good I'd say. Yeah. Yeah. I like the landscape. Yeah. The people have been more friendly actually. That guy in that shop then was really nice. Yeah and I've also found that people aren't staring as much. I don't know if we mentioned that in any of our other videos but I don't know why we just kept getting loads of stares and I don't know if it was just us being. But it was like by every person wasn't it? Yeah and I don't know if we were meant to like stare back and it's just something that everyone does or or what but yeah I've really enjoyed it. I did not expect that when we were coming in. Yeah that national park was really nice. Yeah. Gares national park. Yeah and then that waterfall was nice albeit it took us double the time. But no and yeah Braga as well so yeah it's given us high hopes and they've also already scoped out an acai bowl place so I'm in love with the place. I'm gonna get one of them tomorrow for sure.
