HOW I PLAN MY PAINTINGS Painting a Tiger with Procreate (iPad)
Hi guys, welcome to Studio Wildlife
In today's video, I thought I'd show you something a little bit different
And show you how I actually start some of my paintings
This is before I actually put paint to canvas or charcoal to canvas
Whatever it is that I'm doing
Sometimes I either start by mocking up a reference photo using Photoshop
Or sometimes I actually use my iPad and my Apple Pencil
To sketch up a little mock-up of what I want to do
And that's what I'm going to show you today
I've filmed that process using the inbuilt time-lapse function on Procreate
I hope you enjoy it
If you do, please make sure to give the video a like
And subscribe to the channel
It does mean so much to us
Right, let's get started
So sometimes when I start a painting
I like to just jump right in and get started
But others, I like to have a plan
And think about what I'm actually going to do first
Before I start painting properly
With acrylics or oils or whatever medium I'm going to use
And quite a lot of the time, I do this using my iPad
It's a fantastic bit of kit
And I use it so, so much
It's so great, especially with the new Apple Pencil
It's intuitive, it's easy to use
And you can produce some cracking pieces of work
My plan for this painting is to actually turn it into a massive
1 meter by 1 meter 20 canvas painting
Probably done in oils
I've actually got an old canvas
I've got a portrait painting on
That I'm going to paint over to do this tiger
I like using Procreate and I like using the app
Because I can reposition things really easily
As you've seen me do
And I can really think about that composition
And have a play around with it properly
To get something that I'm happy with
For the majority of this, I did it all on one layer
So it was as similar to traditional painting as I could get
Using that iPad
And I stuck to using the traditional acrylic painting brushes
Wet and dry acrylics
Just because they're the ones that I like to use
I find that doing this really helps me to establish
Where I want form, where I want the shapes
And I can cut away and add things as I see fit
Which is much easier to do on a tablet
Than it is to do in real life
But I do sometimes do these real life drawings as well
For this one, I just thought I would give it a go on the iPad
Because I've not used it in a while
And I really like the outcome
I really like the effect
And I will be turning this into a big picture
I always find the paintings that I have done a preliminary sketch for
Are much better than the paintings that I just go into outright
I've already planned in my head what I'm going to do
I've already planned and practiced painting the shapes
Painting the form, painting the colors
If I am using colors, obviously not for this one
Because it's black and white
The painting just seems to flow a little bit easier
Because all of the problems, all of the kinks
I've already worked out in these preliminary sketches
So when it comes to the actual painting
There's less to worry about
I can just basically repeat what I've already done
Just on a larger scale
I got the reference picture for this piece on Pixabay
I'll pop that up on the screen for you now
So you can see where I'm working from
You can see it is vastly different from that reference photo
And I have just used it for reference
Rather than just copying that particular piece
Here it is all finished
I really hope you enjoyed the video
