Hello everyone, welcome to Little Ticket to the Big World.
I'm Qingqing.
Today I'm going to introduce you to the world's first ticket.
First, let me tell you a story.
The British Empire in the Victorian era entered its heyday.
It was known as the Empire of Sun and Moon.
But in some areas, independent war broke out.
In 1836, there was a rebellion in Upper Canada and Lower Canada.
The British army went to suppress.
The day before the New Year in 1837,
a woman named Mary was preparing lunch for three young children at home.
A tourist knocked on her door and gave her a letter.
It was a letter from her husband on the Canadian battlefield.
She and her children missed their husband day and night, worried about his safety.
They prayed day and night and finally saw the news of their husband.
She was so excited.
But she was too happy too early.
In those days, the letter was paid by the mailman,
with the amount of paper and the distance from the postman.
She wanted to receive the letter again,
but the postman was a little hesitant and said,
Oh, Madam, please give me three pounds.
Mary opened her eyes and said,
Oh, my God, three pounds!
Then she said to the postman,
Sir, it's too expensive.
My family can't afford to eat and drink for a month.
Can you give me a discount? I beg you.
Oh, God, what should I do?
They talked for a long time.
The postman finally agreed to pay her.
A few days later, the letter was delivered again.
Mary cried bitterly.
Her relatives and friends and some kind neighbors
generously donated or lent money to her.
The postman ran three times.
Finally, Mary got her husband's letter.
This news soon spread to Sir Roland Shear.
On February 13, 1837,
Sir Shear proposed to the government
the idea of pre-paid postcards and pre-paid envelopes.
He got a two-year contract
to run a new postcard system.
So he and Henry Kerr
announced to hold a postcard design competition together.
Of the about 2,600 entries,
only four creative designs were selected.
The designers each won £100.
Finally, Sir Shear decided to use
the side portrait of Queen Victoria at the age of 15
as the cover of the postcard.
The design was based on William Ryan's
portrait of John Travolta in 1834.
Henry Kerr provided the draft of the postcard.
Charles Shear and his son Friedrich
The postcard had a white background
and a simple watermark of a crown.
The bottom of the postcard showed
that the postcard had been pre-paid
and was ready to go on the market.
It allowed the public to bid for
up to one-fourth of an ounce,
or 14 grams of postcards,
regardless of the distance.
The postcard was printed in black ink,
so it was known as the Black Postcard.
But the postcard did not have a country's name.
Britain is still the only country
in the world that has
a country's name on the postcard.
The portrait of the Queen shows
that Britain is the original country.
On 6 May 1840,
the Black Postcard was officially launched.
It was the first postcard in the world
to be used in a public postcard system.
It was the first postcard in the world
to be used in a public postcard system.
In December 2021,
a Black Postcard was auctioned
at the Shufubi Auction House
for $8.25 million.
The Black Postcard with the Queen
on its side was posted
on a document dated
10 April 1840.
It was a document signed
by the British oil reformist
and Scottish politician Robert Wallace.
The auction house claimed
that the document stated the date
The owner, Ayrton Polioch,
claimed the stamp
But not a single postcard
