The first half of the 20th century was marked by the War of National Unity.
Bulgaria went through two Balkan and two world wars
in an attempt to gather all Bulgarians left outside the borders of the Kingdom of Bulgaria
in one common country.
In 1912, the First Balkan War broke out.
Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia and Montenegro formed an alliance against the Ottoman Empire.
The Balkan Union won the victory over the Ottoman Empire.
A year later, the Second Balkan War began,
also known as the Inter-Allied War.
In an attempt to end its national unity,
Bulgaria fought against Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania and the Ottoman Empire.
The loss in the Inter-Allied War was the first national catastrophe for Bulgaria.
In 1914, the First World War began.
In 1915, Bulgaria joined the side of the Central Powers against Entente.
The war was lost by Bulgaria,
and after the signing of the Treaty of Noy in 1919,
Bulgaria suffered its second national catastrophe.
The wars in which Bulgaria participated led to thousands of killed and wounded,
floods, starvation and unemployment.
Forced by the circumstances,
Tsar Ferdinand abandoned the throne in favor of his son, Tsar Boris III.
Following the war,
Tsar Boris III was forced to manage in the decades of steppe and political difficulties.
There were murders of politicians, two coups and violations of democracy.
A coup means the overthrow of a legally elected government with violence.
Despite the steppe problems after the war and the political trials,
Bulgaria managed to achieve a cultural upheaval.
New newspapers, writings and books were printed,
both from Bulgarian and foreign authors.
The first radio broadcasts on Radio Sofia began.
In 1939, the Second World War began.
Bulgaria took part in the war on the side of Germany,
led by its governor Adolf Hitler.
During the war,
Bulgaria did not follow Germany's policy of exterminating the Jews.
Bulgarian society, the Orthodox Church,
Tsar Boris and Dimitar Peshev saved 49,000 Jews from death.
At the end of the war,
Bulgaria moved to the side of the Allies against Germany.
Despite the contribution of the Bulgarian Army to the victory over Hitler's Germany,
Bulgaria is not recognized as a winner.
