Precognition is the psychic phenomenon of seeing or otherwise becoming directly aware of events in the future.
The power to foresee the future has been with us throughout history and the act of foretelling was known to the Greeks, Egyptians, Sumerians and Romans.
The following two cases took place in England where two people inadvertently encountered future disasters.
The Deserted Village
The first story is about a Professor Harvey from England who experienced an unusual event in his childhood.
Unaware that what he had foreseen was an event that would happen in the future.
In 1896 Harvey was a 7 year old and lived in St John Street in the town of Hanley, North Staffordshire in the West Midlands of England.
One afternoon he decided to play truant from school and at one point decided to stop and listen to some organ music that was coming from a small church.
As he drew closer to the music he found that the church was empty and locked.
He then continued on his journey until he came to an archway that led onto a street running at right angles.
This in turn led to the back of houses and shops.
As he looked to the left he could see that there were only two houses and at the end of the street was a brick wall.
As he walked towards the brick wall he could see there was a door and he decided to open the door to see what was on the other side.
As he opened the door in front of him was a different world and a small town with houses nothing like he'd ever seen before.
He decided to walk along the street but found that the houses were all empty and bravely entered several of the houses.
And in one particular house he walked upstairs and entered a large room that overlooked the landscape that he'd never seen before.
The land sloped away to a valley but he could not see what was at the bottom of the valley but beyond there were low tree covered hills.
At this stage he began to feel that maybe he was just dreaming and playing true was part of that dream.
Many years later in early 1917 at the age of 28 he was a soldier in the First World War and when fighting Germans at the Battle of the Somme.
He had been sent to 4th Army Headquarters which was located east of a deserted village called Villiers Carbonelle.
The small village was close to the River Somme which ran northward before it took a sudden turn to the west of Saint Quentin.
One evening he had some free time and decided to go exploring amongst some of the neighbouring villages where he hoped to do some sketching.
As he was walking he came upon a village called Misery which he thought ironic considering what the villagers had no doubt been going through in the war.
As he entered the village his hair stood on end as he now found that it was on the very street that he'd come upon in his childhood back in England.
As he walked along he found that all of the people had deserted the village apart from a few dead German soldiers that he'd come upon in a few of the houses and quickly left.
He then entered another house free from dead soldiers and walked upstairs where he found himself in a large room facing east.
As he looked out at the view he was again taken aback as it was the very same landscape that he'd seen as a child but the valley that he overlooked was the Somme Valley.
Why had so many years passed between the vision he witnessed as a 7 year old and now in his late 20's when he was seeing the actual vision?
Everything he'd seen as a child was exactly as he was now looking at but what confused him was in his original vision there were no dead German soldiers
and the village he'd seen as a child was in Hanley where in fact the real village was Misery in northern France near the Somme.
White Tower
On April 20th 1974 a woman by the name of Rebecca Hodgkin and friend Tessa Green from Birmingham England were visiting the Tower of London
and walked to the oldest part called White Tower which at the time housed the armoury and spent a couple of hours inspecting the weapons on show.
As the armoury was situated in the dungeons of the turret they started to feel closed in and a bit claustrophobic and felt they needed to get out for some fresh air.
As they were climbing the steps out of the building Tessa turned to Rebecca and said I can hear children shouting but strangely Rebecca heard nothing.
Then Tessa's voice became louder and more emotional and said I can hear children shouting and crying but Rebecca still heard nothing and suggested the sounds must be coming from the Tower grounds.
But Tessa was now becoming agitated and frustrated stating no it's closer than that and they're yelling.
Rebecca assumed the voices that Tessa could hear were people having an argument and thought it best they did not approach them.
Tessa replied can't you hear it he must be deaf and Tessa started to get annoyed with her friend.
However as Rebecca could hear nothing Tessa thought there was no point continuing their discussion and ended it there.
They walked out into the open air and sought refreshments and put the incident out of their minds.
One month later there was an explosion in the armory of the White Tower where a bomb had been planted.
The headlines in the newspapers dated the 17th of July 1974 read a bomb exploded in the cellar armory at the Tower of London.
Today ripping through clusters of tourists and injuring 42 of them.
One died in hospital.
The explosion set off just after lunchtime held a cannon fifered in the air and drove debris and a rack full of spears through the crowded chamber.
At least a dozen of the injured about half of them children were in serious condition.
How was it that only Tessa Green had a premonition of the disaster?
Almost three months earlier hearing the screams of children where a friend Rebecca Hodgkin heard nothing.
