Regular Engine With ON !!! | All You Need To Know About W16 Engine
In the automotive world, speed is often the main thing that gets people's attention.
In fact, many manufacturers design their vehicles to excel in all aspects.
One of them is Bugatti.
As we know, Bugatti is one of the manufacturers that produces cars with some pretty impressive
specs.
It's worth noting that many of their cars have even broken world records.
One of them is the Bugatti Veyron.
In this video, we'll take a closer look at how it works and the challenges they face
in creating this ground jet.
Let's get right to it.
In 2005, Bugatti, a French company under the Volkswagen Group, introduced the iconic Veyron
model.
But its story actually began in 1997.
At that time, Ferdinand Peach, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and the leader of Volkswagen,
was traveling on a high-speed train in Japan.
He told the head engineer that he needed a car with more than 1,000 horsepower.
The chief engineer quickly jotted down his thoughts on a piece of paper.
They initially estimated that to achieve the desired performance, they would need an engine
with 18 cylinders and a capacity of 9 liters.
However, with such a large number of cylinders, there were issues with its size being too
large and impractical to fit into a car.
To overcome this, they eventually decided to use the Golf VR6 engine concept.
The VR6 engine has the advantage of being very compact with a small inclination angle,
but it has the side effect of slightly reduced efficiency.
The main drawback is that there's no space for turbochargers and a cooling issue with
the cylinder head in the middle.
To fix these issues, the next step was to copy the VR6 block and put it in a circle,
adding a few cylinders to make it an 18-cylinder engine, which is how the W18 engine was born.
They made this concept with great care, starting with sketches and working together to make
it happen.
After running a few tests with the W18 engine they'd created, they found studies on combustion
shape and combustion dynamics along the cylinder.
These showed that for an engine operating at around 6,500 revolutions per minute, the
ideal size per cylinder is 0.5 liters.
This led them to decide to scrap the W18 concept and switch to the W16.
So they were pretty sure that the W16 engine would be the perfect powerhouse for their car.
For its specifications, this W16 consists of two VR8 engines joined at a 90-degrees
angle with a 15-degrees bank to bank spacing.
The engine is made of aluminum, is 28 inches shorter than a V12, and weighs only 1,000
pounds or about 454 kilograms with all its components.
This alloy allows for full operation without any side effects, and the engine is designed
to last up to 250,000 miles or approximately 403,000 kilometers, demonstrating its exceptional
durability.
In addition, with pistons measuring 86 by 86 mm per stroke, this engine provides a balanced
combination of power and torque, also known as a square engine.
The compression ratio is 9.0 to 1, with 1,001 horsepower and 920 pound-feet of torque.
At first glance, this W16 engine may look like a typical V engine because it has two
cylinder heads.
However, upon closer inspection, each cylinder head contains two rows of cylinders that are
closely spaced.
Each row is equipped with four cylinders that are 15 degrees apart.
So it's understandable that, at first glance, many would perceive it as a V engine, because
not only does it have two cylinder heads, but the separation angle between the two cylinder
heads is also 90 degrees.
The valve configuration of this engine consists of 64 valves, with two intake valves and two
exhaust valves for each cylinder.
In addition, each head contains two camshafts, one to control intake and the other to control
exhaust opening, with a cross-arrangement of valves in the middle.
Bugatti claims that its exhaust valves are made of a secret alloy that can withstand
temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees Celsius, allowing for continuous use without any problems.
To manage the 64 valves without complex adjustments, Bugatti uses hydraulic lifters.
The engine is connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox.
One shaft has odd-numbered gears, while the other has even-numbered gears.
The gearbox has oil cooling.
The differential is also oil-cooled and is of the Haldex type.
As for the turbocharging system, the W16 is equipped with four turbos, each supported
by four cylinders.
The first version of the W16 with an output of 1,001 GP was later increased to 1,200 GP
after using four turbos with the same pneumatic wastegates.
These wastegates are responsible for regulating the turbo pressure up to 18 PSI.
Then, with the advancement of their technology, the previous four twin turbos were replaced
with two small turbos and two large turbos.
In addition, the traditional actuators used previously were replaced with electronic modules
controlled by a computer.
This new technology allows for more precise control of the turbo bypass gate in all driving
conditions.
As a result, the sequential turbocharger arrangement provides maximum boost pressure from 2,000
revolutions per minute to 6,000 revolutions per minute.
As for the internals, each cylinder in this engine is equipped with two injectors, one
large and one small.
When the car is running at low power, only one injector is used, with the second injector
activated when needed.
This helps control fuel metering at low RPM.
For those of you who might be interested in buying this car, don't worry, this car will
be a good drain on your wallet.
The Bugatti is also designed with a 100-liter fuel tank, but it can be emptied in 12 minutes
at a speed of 250 miles per hour, or the equivalent of 402 kilometers per hour.
There is also one radiator per bank on the top of the engine.
Essentially an inner cooler, its job is to cool the hot air from the turbo by using cold
water instead of fresh air.
This cold water is then circulated to another radiator, strategically placed in the air
intake to cool it down.
They also didn't forget to mention that they use 16 iridium spark plugs for ignition.
Each of the 16 iridium spark plugs is connected to a single electronic coil, which provides
high voltage for ignition under turbo pressure.
This allows Bugatti to achieve a thermal efficiency of 33%, meaning that the Veyron 1000 HP emits
the same amount of heat as a 2,000 horsepower engine.
To solve this problem, heat is dissipated by 3 frontal water radiators using 40 liters
of antifreeze.
And most of this heat is dissipated through the exhaust gases.
To put this in perspective, the total heat generated by a 2,000 GP engine is equivalent
to that of 700 2,000 watt electric cookers.
When the engine power was first measured, the heat generated was so high that it immediately
triggered a fire alarm at the factory.
Other special technologies, such as active aerodynamics and aircraft-style aerodynamic
brakes, are used to prevent the car from taking off at high speeds.
In fact, this car is faster than some aeroplanes, with speeds of up to 0.4 Mach.
