Hello! This lesson is on the topic of synonyms and antonyms.
When we communicate, we often have to describe, tell or think about something.
In such moments, it is good to choose our words so that we are clear and specific,
and at the same time to show a rich vocabulary and a variety in our spoken choice.
To achieve this, we need synonyms and antonyms.
Synonyms are words with a different sound composition, but with the same or similar meaning.
Most words in the Bulgarian language have at least one synonym,
which makes our task to achieve diversity relatively easy.
Synonyms help to avoid repetition and make the speech more diverse and interesting.
For example, if we want to note that the steak we just ate was tasty,
we can say like this.
This steak was very appetizing, tasty or juicy.
Although it is a lifesaver for the sea of repetition in which we can fall,
it is important to remember that synonyms can not always be replaced with each other.
Everything depends on the context.
Let's see the following sentence.
If you tell me what the correct answer to this task is, I will give you a piece of chocolate.
Let's see what the sentence will look like if we replace the adjective
«верният» with its synonym.
If you tell me what the correct answer to this task is, I will give you a piece of chocolate.
The two words «верен» and «правдоподобен» are synonyms,
but in this context we see that the proposed option is not suitable,
because it does not correspond to the overall meaning of the sentence
and does not correspond to the words that surround it.
In this case, the appropriate replacement would be an adjective
that is often found in combination with the noun «ответ».
For example, «правилен» – «правилен ответ».
Outside the context, as we saw, one word can have at least one synonym,
and even more, such as «верен» and «правдоподобен».
We can add «истинен», «несъмнен», «безспорен», «безпогрешен», «коректен» and others to them.
Thus, these similar words form a synonymous nest.
With its help, we could avoid the insidious repetitions
that unknowingly appear in the flow of speech or when creating a text.
For the diverse and rich use of words and expressions,
the use of antonyms has also contributed well.
They represent words with a different sound composition and opposite meaning.
These are, for example, «богат» – «беден», «говоря» – «молча», «правилно» – «грешно», «тарся» – «намирам», «воспитан» – «невоспитан» and many others.
Like synonyms, one word can have many antonyms.
For example, in the adjective «глупав» antonyms can be «умен», «интелигентен», «остроумен».
It is important to choose the one that is suitable for the given context.
The use of antonyms is very suitable when we give an assessment,
compare different things or in the process of reasoning on something.
We can meet a lot of antonyms in short folk idioms like the proverbs.
Here are some of them.
In these examples we see a direct comparison of absolutely opposite meaning words.
«болен» – «здрав», «зло» – «добро», «краси» – «грузи».
Both synonyms and antonyms contribute to the construction of a well-formed and varied text.
Let's see what the common use would look like in a specific example.
«Тодор» and «Мартин» are twins.
Although they look very similar in appearance, in character they are strongly different.
«Тодор», for example, is quite talkative, and «Мартин» is quiet.
When we have to make an important decision,
«Мартин» is hesitant and does not take action for a long time,
while «Тодор» is decisive and acts quickly.
From the given text we can separate a few double antonyms.
«Приличат» – «различават», «приказлив» – «молчалив»,
«колеблив» – «решителен», «дълговреме» – «бързо».
The synonyms also stand out – «много», «твърде» and «доста».
With these examples we saw how synonyms and antonyms are used,
as well as how their common use contributes to a sharper and more diverse speech.
