After our Silfra snorkeling adventure, we were might hungry! Luckily there was a vegetarian friendly tomato soup buffet on our way through the Golden Circle!! The Fridheimar buffet is quite pricey (as are most restaurants in Iceland) but it was a fun stopover. Don’t make our mistake -- make a reservation in advance! (I’m neither affiliated nor compensated by Fridheimar): http://fridheimar.is/ **Correction: The greenhouse literally grows more than "literally just tomatoes" :D They also have cucumbers -- though we didn't see any of those.#agriculture
Hey guys! We're on our way to the Golden Circle. We just got done at the Self-Ridged Star-Filling tour.
And it started raining right after, so we got lucky.
And just a second ago, it started snowing, hailing, and then went back to rain within like 30 seconds worth of time.
So the weather is definitely crazy.
We're gonna stop and eat something at this farm restaurant called Frito-Fay Bar.
They have a buffet with some vegetarian options, including Frito-Soup, that's supposed to be really tasty.
So we're gonna go try that.
You need reservations normally, so we're hoping we can get in there.
And then the rain will stop before we go see the geyser and waterfall.
So I spent weeks planning this trip out.
We had decided to go the south route to do the Ring Road, but there's high winds that we were trying to replan to do the north way.
And now the winds are starting to calm down for the next few days.
So we're gonna take our chances and go the south route.
Anyway, we'll catch you there. I gotta drive.
We're at the Frito-Mar Farm, and we're gonna go get some tomato soup buffet.
It's also really expensive. Food in Iceland in general, if you're gonna eat out, is really pricey.
It's 21.50 Icelandic Krona, which is a little over $20 U.S. dollars.
So for soup and bread, that's what that'll buy you here.
Ring money.
We just walked in, and it's really busy and really humid in here because they're growing all the plants.
We have to wait like an hour to be seated, so we're gonna walk around a little bit.
We can actually walk around the farm area and look at the different vegetables that they have growing.
So let's go check it out.
There's the baby plants over here. I'm gonna act like I know what I'm talking about.
There's beehives in these boxes up here, and the bees are flying around.
Oh, there's one returning home right now.
Aww.
Are these for sampling?
These are really good.
And you eat right next to the tomatoes.
So the buffet is down there.
They have basil plants on the table, and I saw that they put little tomatoes in the water, so it's cute.
But they're about to call our name for their reservation, so we gotta go over here.
There's bees flying around everywhere to pollinate the tomatoes.
You can see them over here.
There's one queen bee in each box.
They get two to three new boxes every week because apparently when the bees breed,
it's mostly male bees that they get out of that, and the male bees don't pollinate.
So that's how that works.
You're the expert.
Yeah, I'm an expert.
Very fresh.
We ordered some tomato ice cream for dessert, which is something I definitely have never had.
It's served with two dessert sauces.
This one is green tomato and vanilla, and this one is piccolo tomato and strawberry.
That's the sauce, but then the actual ice cream is tomato, too.
Smells good.
Wow, there's a lot of layers to that.
It's weird because it kind of works.
It's being served in a flower pot.
This just tastes like birthday cake.
Really?
There's a lot of tomato chunks in there.
So that is a tomato, green tomato.
I don't know what to say because it's ice cream and I like ice cream,
but I'm eating ice cream tomatoes.
Yeah, it's good.
I feel like it shouldn't be, but it is.
This is 1,390 Icelandic krona, which is about $13.
Our meal was 2,290, which is crazy for tomato soup and bread.
But, yeah, I mean, we were hungry.
So that's over $20 a person.
I'm eating ice cream when I've been freezing all day.
And then I was finally warmed up with soup and coffee,
and then I put a bunch of ice cream in myself, so, yeah.
So you're in Iceland and it's cold out,
but you're in a greenhouse where it's warm and you're eating ice cream made of tomatoes.
It's pretty weird.
We're heading over to the Golden Circle next, and we will catch you there.
Do you want to talk about anything about the place?
Like, if you come down, there's tomato soup and there's horses right back next to the parking lot.
Come on over to Tomato Soup where you get some extra time on your hands and you can pet the horsies.
