Corgis are one of the best loved breeds of dogs. You can't look at a corgi and not smile.
They have such character. But there's more to these dogs than just their cute looks.
They're also highly intelligent and may not be the perfect fit for every lifestyle.
So before you bring a corgi into your home, it's important to know as much about them as you can.
And if you already have a corgi, it never hurts to learn a little bit more about them.
The first thing to know is that there are two different kinds of corgi.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
But how different are they really? Let's take a look.
First, both breeds make great pets for active, involved parents.
As long as they're properly socialized, they can get along great with other dogs
and other pets too. They love to play and need regular exercise.
They're also very intelligent and can benefit from a lot of mental stimulation,
whether that's teaching them a new trick once in a while or making puzzle toys for their treats.
In addition to their behavior, they're also pretty similar in size and weight.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi weighs about 30 pounds and stands about a foot tall when full grown.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi can weigh anywhere from 25 to 34 pounds when fully grown.
Both breeds are also prone to shedding, so it's important to make sure their fur is brushed at
least once a week. Now, what makes these breeds different from one another?
The main physical difference between these breeds, and the easiest way to tell them apart is,
the Cardigan Welsh Corgis have a tail, while the Pembroke Welsh Corgis are born without a tail.
Another difference between these two breeds is their history.
The history of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi goes all the way back to the 10th century.
There are some who believe the Vikings first brought them to England,
and according to some people, Pembroke Corgis are enchanted. Most have markings on their
shoulders that look somewhat like a saddle, known as a fairy saddle. To others, they're basically
considered royalty. The Queen of England has owned around 30 Pembroke Welsh Corgis during her reign.
The Cardigan Welsh Corgi also has a proud history. The breed arrived in England from
Central Europe around the year 1200 BC. It is actually one of the oldest breeds of dogs in
Britain. And now that you know a little bit about these breeds, it's important to know that both
these breeds face their own health challenges, like many breeds do. Here are a few issues that
tend to affect Corgis more than other breeds. This doesn't mean they won't make great pets,
it's just something to keep in mind. The first is degenerative myelopathy.
This affects the spine and can affect your dog's longevity. Typically this surfaces around 8 years
of age, but there is a test to let you know if a dog has a gene that makes this condition more
likely to occur. Finally, Corgis tend to be at a higher risk for hip dysplasia. This affects
many different breeds. It's due to a hip joint that didn't develop properly or an injury. But
all in all, both the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi can make great loving
pets for pet parents who love to exercise their dogs and provide lots of mental stimulation.
