Hello everyone, today we're celebrating a very special feast in the Roman Catholic Church.
The feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
celebrated on May 31st. Let's explore the significance of this beautiful event.
This feast commemorates the Virgin Mary's visit to her cousin Elizabeth,
shortly after the Annunciation. The earliest evidence of this feast dates back to 1263,
when it was adopted by the Franciscan chapter. In 1389, Pope Urban VI established the feast
on July 2nd. After the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, the date was changed to
May 31st. The Annunciation of Angel Gabriel revealed that Mary's cousin Elizabeth was
blessed with a son in her advanced age, so Mary travelled in haste to the hill country,
to a town of Judah, to visit Elizabeth. According to Luke 1.39-42, when Elizabeth heard Mary's
greeting, the infant lapped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out, Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
Mary's journey to visit Elizabeth might have been motivated by her desire to help her cousin,
who was expecting a baby in her advanced age, and to share the news of the Annunciation.
The angel had told Mary, Your relative has also conceived a son in her old age,
this is her sixth month, nothing is impossible to God.
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has
looked upon his handmaid's lowliness. Behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His name. His mercy is from age to age,
to those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones, but lifted up the lowly. The hungry He has filled
with good things, the rich He has sent away empty. He has helped Israel, His servant,
remembering His mercy, according to His promise to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants
forever. The Magnificat is a song of praise that tells of a world where the last become first,
and where life is made through service. The feast of the visitation of the Virgin Mary
is significant because it commemorates the joy of sharing and service.
