Garden Tunnel Food Arbor Growing on Trellis Vertical Gardening Squash Grapes, Chayote Fruit Tomatoes

Hi guys, we're gonna go see Gary. What's Gary doing? I think he's in his tunnel. Hi everybody. It is Robbie from Southern, California I haven't been down to Gary's garden for a while And I'm gonna go down there with you, and we're gonna see what's going on because He was mentioning to me that his tunnel is overgrown. I thought wow didn't look like the last time I was there, so let's get down and see what is going on in Gary's garden. Let's take a quick overhead look Wow Check it out Okay, we're going through. Let's see if I can find him. I we just saw him. We know he's down in the tunnel Yes, it's not amazing. What a beautiful day overcast, but nice Gary. Oh Hi, can we have a peek in your tunnel? You keep raving about this? I don't know. I haven't seen you of course I Haven't seen it this much before. Oh my gosh the outside is all grown. What is this growing all over this? That is tannin and that is chayote And most of this is black chayote squash or black chayote So I've tried to clear a pathway so you can get through without tripping. Oh my god. I have not been inside I have not been I don't think I've been down here for Last time we did a garden tour. That's the last time I came down here. Oh, you've got the same emu bush I've got yeah, this one does really well. I've got two Got this one here and then I've got this one on the other side that doesn't do quite as well Okay, let's do this. Oh my this is like a dark tunnel. Oh my it's gotten really dark now last year I grew white Chayote this year. I'm growing the black has come in. So I planted these planted two plants last May May 23 now, it's May 24 and The black ones have taken over so they're flowering now took them a year to produce fruit. Oh my god This will be a nice place to hang out when you have a heat wave Maybe unless you have stuff falling on your head. Oh my goodness. This is this is why I gave Vivian and a mother Because I've got plenty. Oh, we went on Memorial Day to a barbecue and he brought some chayote Don't worry about it. Oh look It's all over the place Yeah, there's actually a bird nest down. Oh, there's not no egg So I don't I found it. I don't know if I had babies or not, but I found a bird nest down there I I'm I'm in shock because I haven't been here since the last time I came down to look at your garden Oh my goodness. Look at the size of some of these Will they let loose or do you have to actually pick them off? I Right now they'll pick off very easily, but they will let loose but it's not that often and the big leaf gourd I Grew these last year. They're producing new fruit now and I left them on there. They didn't need any support They're just storing on the plant I've got some stored under my benches here, but some of them these are from last year They're just the stems are dry and they're just hanging there This the stems are strong enough to support the weight. So these are pretty happy. They're an amazing fruit I'm so glad I started using them now Because they will last a year one of our subscribers says the last two years Yeah, what a good storage fruit and my totes along here Perhaps I can grow ginger or something that likes full shade. I don't know because last year These had Sun this year. They got no Sun. So I've got two chayotes planted here They're perennials in our climate zone 10a. So this one I Believe is the black one. The other one is the white one and So it took those two plants have covered my arbor My arbor is 40 foot long by 7 foot wide and This has taken over that's also Heading towards the trees in both directions That's heading towards the avocado tree climbing up that I'll have to prune that back That's crossed across my gates down this end So I'll have to prune that back Crossed across the other gate and it's heading down the hill I don't even know. Hey, look at that. And then you've got all of them underneath still I know you've brought a few up No, and they store really well in this environment. So they're Nothing's touching them. They just store like this sit them underneath and I've stored them all winter. I do have grapevines growing. Yeah, but they're getting a little bit crowded out So I may have to prune some back to give my grapevines some light This year they're starting to produce fruit, too So what I need to do is maybe clear some of this out of the way So that the grapes will have an opportunity to produce their fruit So you've got all these totes and what's growing in the totes right now, I see Very little is growing in the totes right now because it's really too shady Some of these I'll have to move out into the sunlight Don't you have to open it? Is that gate still usable? It's still usable, but it's tough to Okay, that's all right. I have to kind of climb through Now do you still have the white chayote squash I Haven't seen any white fruit this year, which is I'm still trying to figure out What's going on with it because I would have expected to have some white fruit But down this end you can see it's the dark green or the black all the way down here I I'm trying to understand how this fruit works because perhaps it produces black in the second year The first year I've still got a few fruit left over from last year that I stored down here And that that's the white that I produced last year so These I just leave down here nothing wants to eat it so they store really well outside if you bring them indoors then they Start they could get mold or different things. I prefer to store them in this environment This is how many plants? Two plants. Hold on this whole tunnel. This whole tunnel is covered This is two plants. Two plants. This is the plant. Yeah, that's part of it All this growth down here is chayote Down the other end. There is some big leaf gourd, but not as much But that hasn't really taken off yet either. So both of these are perennials So you could have just an area like this you could have an unlimited supply of food Now in the winter the leaves die back Yeah, the leaves do die back They stay somewhat green I thought the stem I thought it was going to completely die back, but this year it didn't I'm trying to it's been such a long time since I've grown it that I'm Relearning a lot of the things that I knew about it. And this is I'm gonna send this is great. That's great Yeah, so the grape can make it to the top. It should be okay if it gets the sun Yes, if it makes it to the top a lot of that and the grape is in one of these Grape. Oh, there are grapes around. So there's a grape here and a grape there I've got the tags here varieties and I've got metal tags so that I'll remember the varieties The bench now go on no, I didn't Eventually this was going to be my grape troll So over time I will move them onto another troll. It's Because they produce a storage tuba. It would be very simple to move it I just cut it at the base dig up the tuba and plant it somewhere else So if I was going if I was in a cooler climate I would dig up the tuba bring it into a frost free environment Store it over winter and plant it out when it starts to grow the following spring What I was just going to say it's in the winter Do you have to clear all the leaves off or does it just blow off? Yeah, I have to clear the leaves off as I go through even now. I just kind of trim If there's some old vines that I recognize I can just trim those out like this vine And trim that off and compost it I just do that little by little Perhaps this coming here. I will clear the whole lot and let it come back from the tuba That'll give it fresh growth So now I'm going to go completely off topic. Okay I'll let them vote. Oh, yeah This is what you said you would do in the bird garden a small version of it if I let you yes It's a small bird. They'll be able to watch you put it together from the I mean, I'd have to yeah I'm not orange you and that would be two hooks. So it's each one of these hoops is Five foot wide by seven foot now five foot. Yeah, five foot wide five foot I should say five foot long seven foot wide and Seven foot tall So it would be a section like this So this would be at so the one one section. Yeah what you want to do? And then that would be at the very end of my bird garden It won't be it won't interfere at all. My goodness if it grew like this You'd have bird nests in there and everything and who knows. Yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Do you think I should let him make a small tunnel in my bird garden? Just before you get into the rainbow garden because I have no real plan That's where I'm working right now and working my tail off in there. That would be different So it'd be a small tunnel and then what fruit did you want? Did you have any plans on what fruit you want to put on in my bird garden? Cuz that would be your thing in my fruit garden in my bird garden. Yeah, I haven't given any thought to the Fruit but what I would do is plant something on one side plant something on the other side that would give you plenty of space to walk through you could set things up in the middle and Because of the orientation the Sun would be able to come in Through one side. Oh because it will be turned this way and yeah, I see the Sun already Oh, we have Sun and cloudy. All right, so I get a little bit of Sun. Oh mushroom plant would do good in there Yeah, but this is facing this is facing east to west That's the orientation of this but in your garden will be facing north to south Well, let me see what people think if I should let him build one then then I'll just when he's doing it there All I have to do is record it and they can watch you put up a mini version of this This would not fit. I wouldn't do the whole bird garden anyways, but oh my goodness, I Since I've torn apart everything well, I've been redoing it's kind of a wild garden He brought that up this morning when he saw me working. I said only if you're gonna build it up put your whatever you want to grow on it because I Wouldn't know what to do with it off hand They just pop off That I think you caught that it just yeah Pop it off and that's the two colors. So this one's an older one So it's a little wrinkly, but it's still edible and that's the one that grew last year and this is the one that's growing now reducing now, so That produced late summer last year. It's produced now now, which is mine and the road Now because it's got a more of a it's got like a latex sap and I don't think they Like it it would be an it's an irritant when I cut them up I wear latex gloves to protect my hands or you could cover your hands in Oil just so that you don't Touch the latex because it is an irritant and it does kind of burn your skin On the outside on the inside when you start breaking through the peel Oh on the inside Well Once I cut it up I put it in water immerse it in water and that way that starts to take away some of the latex Interesting and yet you can eat it and you can eat it raw once you peel it you can eat it raw there's some sort of protectant so Rodents or whatever won't take this fruit and then you've got is it canna canna. Yeah. Well, they're doing fine here They're doing good in full shape. So this I would consider this full shade now And you don't like your No Doesn't like they grow so I think on the camera. It looks lighter than it actually is Yeah, it does because it's dark in here. This will be nice to hang out on a hot summer day. I Just can't get over these things Look at that. They're all over. I'm sure I've missed so many walking through here because they're everywhere so what you're trying to figure out maybe somebody knows the answer if they throw right white the first year and then go to green or if you've got different plants growing here, is that what you're trying to figure out because I planted one of each and Because they're all into locking It's going to be hard to track down where the vine starts and they taste the same they tasted the same I Believe there's a little less latex in the dark green ones Hmm. What is this? You know, yeah, that's that's one that started. Oh, it's growing. I see. Okay, actually it's set root You're gonna leave it then might as well Might just actually move the tote and let move it somewhere else Real quick, I guess we could go to the other other one the other tunnel. Oh daylight So I planted these two this year So these are the white ones. I will see what fruit they produce but I planted those about a month or two ago So they're up to there and then this one I planted last year. I had two here. My dogs dug one up and I Put the broken piece back in the ground and a set root and it continued on so this one here has never set fruit yet So I'm waiting to let that set fruit. And of course, I've got Sweet potato growing up here. I'm finding that up to So this area is a nice little nursery area. I get a little bit of shade here and I use this as a nursery But you got two small plants you pointed out a small plant you also have these things Yeah, bigger plants the bigger plant that starts on this side goes up and over Oh my gosh, I remember I planted one years like 30 years ago and remember I had told you it was a nightmare went up the avocado tree and I Didn't even know what to do with the fruit That was the end of it then you were so excited to plant. I don't know. It's been really good. It tastes really good Wow, and then you've got your society garlic. Yeah, I've got my society garlic and some nasturtiums growing in here a tomato that hung on for the winter Over winter. I don't know if it's I've got tomatoes over here, too This is it. Oh one of my dwarf tomatoes the one that I told you is my favorite and That that's I planted last year and it's come back So I figured that only grows to say this high and That can take up the small space on my trellis and then from there up I can grow the chayote So they won't They each have their own space And all these dragon fruit are these anything special or these are the ones these are just the white ones If a piece gets in my way, I just cut it throw it in the pot if it sets root That's great. If it doesn't I compost it and then what are you doing? I'll be I Will probably graft onto them. I like our fruit Anything else you want to show us? No, I think that's pretty much it If they want to see the inside they can just let us know and we can do that next time. Oh, what is this? Yeah, that's lavender I've got three pots of lavender. Yeah, I've got yeah, here's This that's what I gave you the other day So far so good. We'll see if I'm I've never been able to keep lavender alive in the burgers. I don't know why so I've got three three Pots with cut lavender cuttings. Oh, wow We could walk around on the outside real quick just to see the outside of the tunnel And then yeah, I guess we can wrap it up and then we can do the inside if they want to see that This is the outside of this die We got bananas back there, how do you get to those I water them from the inside of the tunnel and I have to Cut my way through Yeah, I've got quite a few apples, yeah, this is it doing really well this year I gave it a good pruning and This is going to produce hopefully a lot of fruit. I Just had a thought which I thought before and forgot rethought you could grab Some of this onto my apple trees we could try yeah, I've never graphed it, but that would just be a matter Yeah rafting on the tribe. Maybe I should the trees are doing good. All right, so we're going to go to the other side Just take a look I'll have a bathtub to set up. We've got thick leaf gourd all over the ball. My goodness Yeah, this this here going out of that gate then I had my totes set up one Here and this took over so remove the tights I'm going to clear this area and put another tunnel here and I want to keep them away from the trees because they're heading to the traits. You're putting another tunnel here. Yeah But there's no room. Yeah, there's room. So I only need seven feet So it'll be from this end It'll be to here because this They'll be when I'm set up there'll be room in between oh my goodness Yeah, this was one plan if you turn your back and you don't pay attention for a little while I think that grows like crazy, especially once it gets size to it Yeah, five minutes. It will grow kind of like my geranium. I turn my back and they're all over the place Growing up the avocado tree there. So I've got a trim definitely trim that back Speaking of geranium see it up the hill in my bird garden There's the bird garden up there and that's the hummingbirds up there And our citrus trees. Oh My goodness. Well, this was entertaining a toast on the outside. No only on the only on the inside Okay, cuz I see a toast there and the Sturgeon's growing and I don't know what this plant is kind of a Yeah, I'm tree looking thing it's a water plant I can't remember what okay what it is Now this all we leave that for the birds as much as we can All right. Well, this was entertaining Wow The fruit on the top never be able to get to that. I guess once you start clearing and yeah, it's got great all along More fruit fruit more flowers and fruit for me So I can come down here and pick any of the small ones when they start producing tons of small ones at any time Yeah, or I can have you pick it. I use that in ground beef Especially my zucchini flow. I had one zucchini and a few little ones, but I love using zucchini and ground beef, but It's been too cool. Look at the artichoke. I want it. Oh Yeah, perfect size or even a little bigger yeah, this is this size is Yeah, you would consider the perfect size when they get to this size or bigger Then they they have a lot of seeds in them, but when they're that size They don't have a lot of seeds or soft seed. What what is it? Well, this is what I experimented with I opened one that was a little bit bigger than that not much bigger and I found a bunch of soft seed with about six or seven. I can't remember exactly Black seeds, which I was surprised so I grew them and they grew Yeah, so they don't have a they don't have a lot but for some reason this must be why they're so prolific even small They start to produce a few seeds in there in case something happens to the fruit I've never seen that before because normally it would wait till the plant or the fruit is mature and yet I opened it up to find a few black seeds very tiny black seed, but they grew Well, and then you got your artichoke that you better pick but boy, they're starting to open at that So this is one of them you moved out here. Yeah, I'm this one out It's not as vigorous as it was but but yeah, it should establish itself But yeah, they're starting to open like especially that one I'll put some society garlic around it to sort of try to do deter insects That's another I've got two varieties Yeah, and that's doing really well this year tape I Gave him a pretty heavy friend because I had them. I hadn't pruned them for years So the deer can't get in there anymore the deer ate up all your apples one night yet for the apple You were so excited a 40 apples in one night Okay, so they can't get in anymore Inside your tunnel, hold on Okay, I don't know where he went oh there is Have you found any hummingbird nest inside your tunnel? No, I haven't told the nest that I found a plane in my mind got Right now. I know he's playing up the flowers. Okay.
