Three genres of Balinese traditional dance were recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO
during the 10th session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage,
held in Windhoek, Namibia on December 2, 2015.
The three Balinese traditional dance genres are as follows.
Wali, considered sacred and thus performed at religious ceremonies inside the main yard of a temple.
Babali, considered semi-sacred. This genre of dance is often performed during temple ceremonies.
Bali Balihan, the genre of dance is designed for entertainment purposes and are thus,
since the 19th century, have been performed outside temples or at entertainment venues.
The recognition granted by UNESCO is proof that tradition of Balinese dance is not only intangible cultural heritage owned by Indonesia, but also humanity.
Thus, Bali does not just belong to Indonesia, but also the world, said Culture and Primary Education Minister Anis Baswedan.
As consequence, Indonesia already has seven cultural elements that are included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity category.
