Angelina Jolie: This Oscar winner is one of Hollywood's sexiest stars, and her public image has evolved from quirky wild child to devoted humanitarian and philanthropist.
When Angelina Jolie does it, she does it her way.
Men.
I mean, we just happen to be public.
I guess the stuff that some people might think is bad, we think is good.
Brad's sweet. He's a really great actor. He's a really good guy.
Acting.
Angelina, it was frightening. It was intimidating.
I was frightened that it was going to just push me over the edge.
Activism.
When Angelina Jolie speaks, the world listens.
She immediately responded to the people she saw suffering.
Family.
With her Oscar in hand, she goes to her brother and she kisses him on the lips.
Motherhood.
When is the wedding? That's the big question, the last question for Brangelina.
We've got rare home video, plus an exclusive interview with Jon Voight, Oscar winner and estranged dad.
I'm very attentive to what's going on with her and I'm always concerned about her happiness.
I don't have a relationship with my father.
I want nothing more than to hold my baby in my arms and keep her from harm.
Plenty of stars stroll down the infamous red carpet, but this star is one of the brightest and most controversial.
Nobody gets it. Nobody understands everybody's attacking and I'm weird or I'm dark.
Here is Angelina Jolie like you've never seen her before, and this is her story.
The E! True Hollywood Story.
Angelina Jolie is definitely not your grandmother's movie star.
I think everybody should go a little insane.
And then she'll shock people by letting them know something they wouldn't expect her to tell them.
I don't think we've seen anything quite like her.
And then there's a bunch of them here. It's the, why don't we take your clothes off and do a love scene.
And you go, can you get rid of that?
We have really watched this woman grow up. I think she's really learned a lot.
She's lived out loud completely.
So as we get to know her, and as we get to peel back the layers of this Hollywood onion, so to speak, then it tends to make sense.
In spring 1975, six years after his acclaimed role in Midnight Cowboy,
actor John Voight and his wife Marshalene Bertrand were expecting their second child.
They already had a two-year-old boy named James Haven Voight.
Her mom and I looked through all the books, as parents do,
and she wanted both my children to have a second name that was a strong name.
And we looked at every kind of combination and she came up with Angelina Jolie.
Angelina being an Italian name and Jolie being French and stuff.
But it just sounded so beautiful and both names were perfect.
She arrived on June 4th, 1975 in Los Angeles.
I held her in my arms and talked to her, you know.
And that was an extraordinary moment.
The togetherness didn't last.
John and Marshalene separated shortly after Angelina's birth.
I was having difficulty with a marriage and I had an affair and there was a divorce.
There were bad feelings.
My mom was a great lady.
She always wanted to be an actress.
And she married my dad when she was 20.
And by 25 she was divorced with two little kids and couldn't.
But loved being my mom.
In 1979, Marshalene moved to a New York suburb with Angelina and James in tow.
They were very close and had a great love for each other.
And they would play all the time together.
Angie's first director was Jamie.
We had a little video camera.
And Jamie would say, Angie, do this or that.
And Angie would be very willing to get in front of the camera.
It's just him following me around going, do this, do this.
Put on a show, put on a show.
I actually used to say, act Angie, act now.
And then she would do something for me this whole show.
In 1980, 5-year-old Angelina turned pro with a little help from dad.
John Boyd got Angelina cast in a movie called Looking to Get Out, a movie that he was in.
And her part in it was small, but she was really jazzed to be doing it.
And she was a natural.
However, things were not so picture perfect off camera.
Angelina didn't live this charmed life of the daughter of a film actor.
John always had a difficult time finding work that he wanted to do.
You know, he was very selective.
So he'd go long periods of time without working.
We didn't have a lot of money, actually, which a lot of people think we did.
In 1984, Marshalene and the kids moved back to L.A.
Despite limited resources, mom managed to keep the kids entertained.
Angelina especially loved going to renaissance fairs.
She really got into that.
She did start to collect knives when she was very young,
which was the beginning of this darker Angelina Jolie.
In the fifth grade, another side of Angelina's character surfaced.
There was a fellow who was a physical training teacher at school.
And there was a budgetary problem. He was going to be let go.
Angie's friends and Angie got together and decided that they were going to fight for him.
They started this campaign, Save R. Smith.
She's picketing. She's walking up and down the street with her sign.
They came up with the idea of a bake sale,
where they could sell cookies and cakes and stuff to raise money for my salary.
In fact, of nine teachers on the block, all but Coach Smith were given pink slips.
They really were like a little army.
They were very focused on doing something good for somebody.
I'm still there at the school, so they obviously did a very good job.
And I think Angie probably, you know, maybe that was the beginning of something for her,
so that she felt that she could affect things, she could make a difference.
Angelina's next platform was the stage.
As a teenager, she enrolled in the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theater Institute.
I remember very early on doing a play and kind of waiting in the wings to go on,
and I remember feeling this kind of rush of excitement to go on
and just feeling that this was just something that meant a lot to me.
Adolescence also brought out Jolie's darker side.
Angelina hated high school. She was really removed from the rest of her classmates.
She wasn't a cheerleader or any of that kind of thing.
She dyed her hair black. She was obsessed with knives.
She wasn't this happy-go-lucky kid like most of the kids in her high school,
and people really started to make fun of her.
In fact, Angelina's pain ran deep.
She used to cut herself, so she was into a little bit of self-mutilation.
She was depressed. She had thoughts of suicide.
That happened when I was, God, 14.
It's not about suddenly I'm, you know, I just can't take it, I'm going to die.
For me, a lot of it had to do with if people, if I'm crazy or I'm dark,
or I'm just a negative, or I'm, if everything about me just makes people,
you know, nobody gets it, nobody understands, everybody's, you know, attacking,
and I'm weird or I'm dark.
But at least one guy got it.
When Angelina was 14, she had her first boyfriend,
and her mother said, well, let him stay with us,
rather than you go out to the park in the middle of the night or whatever.
So she had a live-in boyfriend.
High school was a drag, too, and Angelina wanted out.
She jumped on the fast track, graduating in 1991 at age 16.
And then I said, well, now you'll have a little time, let's, what are you going to do with it?
She said, I don't have any time.
I said, what do you mean?
She said, I've got boxing, I want to sign up for boxing lessons,
fencing lessons, voice lessons, two acting classes.
So I realized that she was serious about this,
and I knew that she would be an actress.
Dad was right.
Angelina tried out for a spot at the Met, an L.A. theater workshop.
She auditioned for actresses Holly Hunter and Amy Madigan.
I think everybody was sort of reluctant, thinking,
okay, are we going to be taking somebody in
just because they're the daughter of somebody famous?
And that was quickly dispelled as soon as she went to work.
I mean, everyone saw what she had.
I think there was a pressure to be, you know, that people expected my dad,
or were just going to always compare me to him,
and I was never going to be able to have my own identity.
She decided to take the name Jolie, to use her middle name.
You know, her father is an Oscar-winning actor.
She didn't want to necessarily ride the coattails of her father.
If she was going to make it, she needed to make it on her own.
In 1992, 17-year-old Angelina landed a part in Cyborg 2 Glass Shadow.
This movie didn't even make it to the theaters.
It went straight to video.
She had a small role in the film,
but nobody thought this was a good piece of work.
Here we go.
Roll sound clip.
We're rolling.
And background.
Background.
Action.
After a few short films, Angelina joined the ensemble cast
of the Gen-X cyber-thriller Hackers in 1995.
The part came with an extra perk,
a romance with co-star Johnny Lee Miller.
I think this is a woman who was looking for love.
Didn't have the father figure at home necessarily,
or the disciplinarian.
Had a lot of freedom in her life.
Made certain bold decisions.
And was able to get away with them.
Angelina's next film, Foxfire,
co-star 27-year-old Jenny Shimizu.
Angelina, she's hot, damn it.
Yeah, Angelina's great.
She actually helped me a lot, you know, confidence-wise.
You know, in every which way, just because I'm a newcomer.
Jolie later told Girlfriends magazine
she fell fast and hard for Jenny.
She realized that she had an attraction to women
as well as to men.
She says, yeah, I've had this relationship with this girl
and I found the way she looked in a sweater very attractive
and a woman has curves.
You know, that's not something that you expect to hear
from a woman who's just starting out.
They hit it off really well right from the start.
They started a sexual relationship.
And at one point, Angelina even said that
if they were legally allowed to marry,
she would want to marry Jenny.
Instead, on March 28, 1996,
Angelina married Johnny Lee Miller.
Johnny Lee's buddy, actor Jude Law, was the best man.
Angelina's wedding to Johnny wasn't your typical wedding.
She was wearing a blouse during the ceremony
that had his name written in blood all over it.
Coming up, a role to die for.
So I was frightened that it was going to just push me over the edge.
And later...
I'm like, wait, you guys are perverted.
You guys are messed up.
You guys have problems.
I'm fine.
Angelina Jolie started in 1997
with a new husband and a promising career.
After a few solid movie parts,
the 21-year-old actress switched to the small screen
for the miniseries George Wallace.
Jolie played Cornelia,
second wife of the controversial Alabama governor.
It was a juicy role.
I just think, God, if I can pull this off,
I'll be so proud of myself, you know?
It's a real big challenge.
For an actor, Wallace was really, you know,
I read it and I thought, God, you know,
political wife and she water skis and she country sings
and she's bright and sunny and...
And I just thought, I could never do that.
So I had to attempt that.
Meanwhile, execs from cable giant HBO
were casting for another biopic.
Gia told the story of the meteoric rise
and tragic fall of Gia Karangi,
the 70s supermodel who developed a heroin addiction
and died of AIDS at age 26.
Casting VP Carrie Frazier zeroed in on Angelina.
I called the producer and director
and the casting director and I said,
I think this might be our girl.
She passed on it a number of times.
She knew the amount of energy,
emotional commitment,
and what it would really take out of her
as a human being to play this character.
It was somebody that I knew.
I knew that side of myself.
I was frightened that it was going to just
push me over the edge and make me go really nuts
and feel really weak and fall apart
because I had been holding on to so much.
Ultimately, Angelina signed on.
Gia began production in the summer of 1997
Sholi's instincts were right.
The experience nearly took her to the brink.
She was playing someone who went into
a profound state of darkness
and to go there and to be there
and to live there for several months,
every day, all day,
I don't think people realize the toll
that can take on one's psyche.
Just dealing with those issues
and just really thinking about them
and putting yourself in somebody else's shoes
and wondering how she got there
and how could this be me?
This could be me.
The film reportedly had a profound effect
on Sholi's personal life too.
In October 1997,
Angelina and husband Johnny Lee Miller separated.
Sholi decided to take some time off.
I stepped away from acting just for a bit
just to explore the other sides of me
and to not count on the fame and all of that
and not count on anything
and just kind of get back to what means what to me
and to start attempting all those things
I dreamed about doing.
She ended up going back to New York.
She enrolled in NYU film school
and just decided she was trying to take a break
from this kind of life and start over.
But Hollywood wasn't ready to let Sholi go.
In December 1997,
she was nominated for a Golden Globe
as Best Supporting Actress in George Wallace.
Her dad, John Voight, also scored a nomination
for his role as a ruthless lawyer in The Rainmaker.
He called me.
He said, well, congratulations.
I said, well, congratulations to you.
It was nice.
Father and daughter attended the ceremony
in January 1998.
John didn't win, but Angelina did.
Most of all, my family.
Mom stopped crying, stopped screaming.
It's okay.
Jamie, my brother, my best friend.
I couldn't do anything without you.
I love you so much.
Dad, where are you?
Hi.
I love you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
She looked like a princess.
She looked so beautiful and so lovely
and spoke so well.
And it was really, I mean, you could kind of,
you got a shiver because you realized
you were watching something really special.
The rush continued.
Gia premiered two weeks later.
That performance is a tour de force performance.
She was Gia.
She was the show.
I was like watching it like everybody else.
Whoa.
You know, and very proud of her.
In February, Angelina began work on Pushing Tin,
a dark comedy about air traffic controllers.
Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton played Jolie's husband.
They clicked right away.
He's wonderful.
He's as crazy as he is,
he's also one of the most,
there's something very special about him.
You know, there's something really unique
and wonderfully bizarre about him
that I love.
But Billy Bob was involved with someone else,
actress Laura Dern.
Angelina was aware of that
and so she found him attractive
but she just never thought
there was going to be a relationship there
and so she sort of shied away from it.
In the fall of 1998,
Jolie played a cop in the thriller The Bone Collector
opposite Denzel Washington.
She's fantastic.
I think she has, the sky's the limit for her.
There are some action scenes
and there's a lot of physical stuff in this movie
that I guess in some ways is new to me.
I've never chased somebody down and stopped a train
and climbed in a manhole
and jumped in the water,
you know, things like that.
1999 brought Jolie a second Golden Globe nomination
for her work in Gia.
Angelina attended the ceremony in late January
escorted by her soon-to-be ex-husband,
Johnny Lee Miller,
and her brother, James.
Angelina Jolie, Gia.
She told the press that if she won,
she would jump into the pool with all of her clothes on.
I guess I have to now, don't I? Oh, man.
Well, somebody has to find Randolph Duke
and hold him back
because it's his dress
and he's going to try to stop me.
But I said I'd go in the pool if I won,
so I think I just might have to go in the pool.
She did it with her brother in hand
and it was a great moment for her
and I guess a memorable one for her fans.
Coming up, love is strange.
We just are the way we are
and we don't really think about it
as being a bad thing.
January 1999 proved to be a hot month
for Angelina Jolie.
The 23-year-old actress
collected her second Golden Globe award.
She also began work on the film Girl Interrupted.
It's based on a book
about this woman who went into a mental institution
in the 60s
and one of the writers playing that character
who goes in and she meets a few people
when she's in there
and one of them is this woman, Lisa Rowe,
who's a sociopath
and has been in there since she was a little girl.
Angelina's role in Girl Interrupted
was sort of a perfect role for her.
Lisa was the girl who pushed everyone's buttons,
a lot like Angelina.
Once again, Jolie's intensity blurred the line
between fiction and reality.
One of the things about the ensemble cast
of Girl Interrupted is that
Angelina got so much into her head
that she really became the outsider.
She became the girl
that the other girls had to wonder about
and so when the cameras stopped,
they still didn't know how to deal with her.
Angelina, it was frightening.
It was intimidating.
I mean, she's an excellent actress
and she would challenge me
and I appreciated that.
Winona, I had to not actually talk to her too much
because if I saw something very human about her
or if she would tell me why something hurt her so much
or why I couldn't be sensitive to her when I saw her,
I couldn't think she had a headache in the morning
and a scream in her face.
I couldn't know.
So I had to just...
I couldn't become too close friends with her
because I wouldn't have been able to attack her.
Her access to her emotions is unbelievable
to watch and to be around.
She's a very emotional actress
and a very sort of accessible actress
and I'm saying that as an actor.
You know, when you're...
She gives a lot.
You kind of put yourself through therapy
and you have to know every day and every minute
what means what to you.
And a lot of days you go in crying
thinking that that's going to make you cry
and then you realize that you've kind of overcome that
or you understand that now
and then something else comes up
and you realize that something bothered you
and you didn't know it.
Girl Interrupted hit theaters in December 1999.
I guess you would say she stole the picture.
Her presence was just so strong
and her character was so strong.
You can't ever anticipate
who the public's going to fall in love with.
Yeah, it was Winona Ryder's movie
but all of a sudden came this other girl.
Girl Interrupted, Winona Ryder.
And she was ultimately the one who got all the accolades.
In January 2000, Angelina received
her third consecutive Golden Globe Award
for Girl Interrupted.
Ecstatic, Jolie shared the stage with her brother James.
Oh God, I never go anywhere without him.
He's like my husband.
It wouldn't feel right without him
but he really had to see that.
Wasn't it crazy, that view?
Awesome.
It is the craziest view in the world
when you're standing up there.
The following month, Jolie was nominated
for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.
I was in Mexico and I didn't know
that they were nominating people that morning
so I think I blocked it out
and then I get a knock on the trailer
and it was about 10 people with a phone
and I was like, oh.
On the night of March 26, 2000,
Angelina showed up at the Academy Awards.
Once again, she was escorted by her good luck charm.
Jolie walked off with the big prize.
I really didn't expect it.
I just hid in my brother's arm.
When Angelina won the Oscar,
she surprised everyone by just standing up
and saying that she is so in love
with her brother right now.
And you would expect her to say something
about father or lover or mother.
It was her brother.
People were so confused by this.
They didn't understand.
You're supposed to love your brother
but you're not supposed to be in love with your brother.
She's with her Oscar in hand
and then the cameras followed her
and she goes to her brother
and she kisses him on the lips.
And it just seemed like
they held the kiss a little too long
and this got into all the papers
and all the tabloids
and is there an incestuous relationship
going on between these two and whatever.
And she was puzzled by that really.
She honestly didn't realize
that people are going to take it literally.
It was very confusing
and it pretty much overshadowed her Oscar win.
I'm like going, you guys are perverted.
You guys are messed up.
You guys have problems.
I'm fine.
We are what I consider to be
an appropriate brother-sister relationship
where it's like we're as close as you can get
without anything else.
It's like we're just saying
we're totally supportive of one another.
We love each other.
We would never hurt one another.
And the idea of a kiss and a quick hug,
come on.
It's like what are you talking about?
In fact, Angelina had a crush on Billy Bob Thornton,
her co-star in Pushing Tin.
We didn't really date.
We were just friends since we met
when we worked together
and we liked each other's work
and then we found ourselves at a time
when our lives had changed.
It was just a very natural thing.
It became a whirlwind
because Laura Dern was engaged to Billy Bob.
We were in other relationships
and we were just friends for a long time.
You know what I like to call it?
Technical difficulties.
Billy Bob and Angelina solved the problem.
On May 5, 2000, they eloped to Las Vegas.
Both wore blue jeans for the quickie ceremony.
The whole deal cost $200.
It was May 5th, which is like not only Cinco de Mayo
but the day that all the planets were lined up
for the first time in like 8 billion years
or something like that.
That's the day we got married.
So for anybody who has any doubt,
it's planetary.
Tough luck, guys.
No one was more surprised
about Billy Bob's marriage to Angelina
than Laura Dern,
who still thought she was dating him.
She gave these famous quotes saying,
I went away for a movie and I came back
and my boyfriend was married to someone else.
She had no idea they were dating.
She thought she was still with Billy Bob.
The marriage was Jolie's second
and number five for Thornton.
They're unique characters
and they matched one another
in the ways that I think most people can see,
which is, you know,
the kind of characters they play
and the way they live their lives
are more eccentric, you know,
about the way they carry themselves
and I think they just matched.
I'm married to my best friend
and I can look in his eyes
and just feel so safe
and so at home
and nothing else matters
and nothing can hurt me
or get to me, you know.
A week after the ceremony,
the newlyweds moved into a Beverly Hills mansion
once owned by Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash.
They were talking about a few extra rooms
for possibly having children
and believe me, this house had a few extra rooms.
Slash built a recording studio
and Billy Bob was getting into music
so that sold the deal, that was it.
He really wanted the house.
They were so madly in love
that I couldn't see where one began
and the other ended.
Angelina and Billy Bob ruled
as Hollywood's hottest couple.
They would walk the red carpet
making out at every step.
He told cameras that we just had sex
in the car on the way over.
They also wore vials with each other's blood in it
to symbolize their love.
This was just the weirdest couple you could imagine
who weren't afraid to tell you
how weird they were.
I mean, we just happened to be public.
It's never been a, I mean,
I think I would regret if I ever said to him,
okay, we're going out in public now.
Let go of my hand or don't kiss me now
because they're gonna talk about it.
We just are the way we are
and we don't really think about it
as being a bad thing.
I guess the stuff that some people might think is bad,
we think is good, you know,
about how nutty we are or something like that.
I mean, yeah, sure,
we're getting a Velcro wall in our house.
Yeah, we are, so what?
We can throw ourselves against it and stick to it.
We're working on the Velcro wall.
We've got part of it,
it takes a long time to make the suits.
I don't see why that's so bizarre.
Coming up, eyes wide open.
I suddenly think about the future
and I think about life in such a,
in a very different than I used to.
And later.
Almost right away, people started to talk
and speculate whether or not their breakup
had anything to do with the relationship
between Brad and Angelina.
In the summer of 2000,
three months after becoming Mrs. Billy Bob Thornton,
Angelina Jolie began filming Lara Croft Tomb Raider.
The daredevil role brought Jolie a big payday,
$7 million.
Lara Croft is, to me, a sort of dangerous,
intelligent, sexy,
addicted to the adrenaline buzz of doing this stuff.
And to me, that was Angelina.
I wanted to go on this adventure
and I wanted to,
I wanted to live this life for a while.
I wanted to train for months
and be really healthy and learn skills
and get stronger
and I wanted to go to these countries
that I'd only heard about
and understand their history
and I wanted to run around
and be really free.
One crucial part had yet to be filled.
I was looking for a father to play
Lara Croft's father in the film
and I'd already started shooting
and John Voight's name came up.
I get a call.
Dad, this is Angie.
She tells me,
the producers, the director are excited
to have you play the part of the father
and I'd like you to do it too.
I said, well,
and it really hadn't occurred to me.
Great, let's do it.
This is it.
So this is to be our thing together.
So,
packed the bag and jumped on the next plane out
and a couple of days later
I was shooting a scene as Lord Croft.
The scene was very personal
because it's very much a father and a daughter
coming together to say things
that they maybe haven't said
or haven't said enough
and we wanted to say those things
and I wanted to hear those things.
When it was all over we kind of hugged
and I think we both had trouble not crying during it.
The shoot took cast and crew to Cambodia,
a country devastated by more than 30 years
of war and repression.
The situation made a huge impact on Jolie.
And she immediately responded
to the people she saw suffering
and the needs that she saw
that she could perhaps help with.
Tomb Raider wrapped in November 2000.
Angelina then began researching her next role
as a refugee aid worker in beyond borders.
She also contacted the United Nations.
I started working simply because I was just
a young woman who realized there was a lot
I didn't know about the world
and a lot I didn't know about the situations
and what was happening on a daily basis.
And I wanted to travel and understand
and so I started to do that
and my life completely changed.
In February 2001, Angelina traveled to Sierra Leone
with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees,
the UNHCR.
I met these different people who were refugees
and just these amazing people
that survived things that none of us
could even possibly imagine.
When you meet them and know them
and you just come back and look at your life
and all the things people worry about here
and it just, it doesn't make much sense.
Initially I was even scared for her to go into Sierra Leone.
I mean, not even scared.
As a parent I was, you know, concerned
to go into some of these places
because you never know the dangers that lurk there.
And I was concerned about safety, safety issues.
While Angelina focused on the plight of third world children,
her husband had a different set of priorities.
Billy Bob wanted to make music with his new band.
Cracks appeared in the marriage.
All of a sudden, you know, she's changed dramatically.
He got into his music more, you know.
He was, you know, he's doing his movies.
They're both busy people,
but they're not on the same page any longer.
In August 2001, the United Nations offered Jolie a formal position.
She gladly accepted.
They asked me to join as a Goodwill Ambassador,
which would be to just become officially working with them
and then to raise awareness,
which I was happy to do because I felt informed at that point enough
to actually speak on their behalf in some way.
And then I just, so I travel to lots of different countries
and I meet with people in the field.
Clearly a lot of people in the villages do not know
who Angelina Jolie is from the movies.
They've not seen a movie.
They have no television.
What they see is a person committed to helping them,
to interacting with them, just one person to another
and somebody obviously friendly, interested,
and committed to exactly the situation that she's in with them.
Jolie returned to Cambodia in November 2001.
This time, Billy Bob came along.
While touring an orphanage, one very special child
grabbed Angelina's heart and wouldn't let go.
She said that she put him in her arms and he just melted.
It really felt real to her
and she decided she really wanted to adopt this child.
I've been to a lot of orphanages.
I've always wanted to adopt an orphan
and I felt that I was stable in my life
and I was able to be a parent finally.
In March 2002, during filming of Beyond Borders in Africa,
Angelina took custody of the 7-month-old boy.
She named him Maddox Siobhan Thornton Jolie.
He came home when I was in Namibia, Africa
and all the African women helped me to learn
how to be a better mother.
Yeah, it was really great.
Back in Hollywood, Jolie's dad told the world.
Angelina just got a baby yesterday.
We adopted a Cambodian baby and she's a baby boy.
I don't know yet.
I don't know if they have a name for him yet.
We have to see who he is.
I'm a grandfather today.
She really wanted to keep that private.
She was bonding with the child.
She didn't want to be bothered by the press
who was going to hound her to see new pictures
and information about this baby
and she was really upset that he had spilled the beans.
The relationship became even more strained
when Voight sent Jolie a letter
reportedly expressing concern over her lifestyle
and relationship choices.
Angelina broke off contact with her father
and later told Vanity Fair that she found the letter hurtful.
The situation wasn't much better with the other man
in Jolie's life, Billy Bob Thornton.
They were living different lifestyles.
He is no longer going to be kissing her in public
and just putting tattoos back and forth.
It's like that Angelina is gone.
She made up her mind what she wanted.
She found a new man.
He was a baby.
Angelina filed for divorce in July 2002
after two years of marriage.
Meanwhile, John Voight went public
with his concerns about Angelina.
The reason for my plea is not for myself.
I have to let you know that.
Of course, I want nothing.
I want nothing more than to hold my baby in my arms
and keep her from harm.
But there's much that has to be done.
And I want to tell Angie that I love her.
Boy, John Voight, he's trying to connect
with his daughter in some way and see his grandson
and be a part of that, and she's saying no.
No, no, no.
I don't want that.
In August, Jolie released statements
saying she didn't want to publicize the reasons
for her bad relationship with her father
but that she didn't think it was healthy
to be around him now that she had her son.
The following month, Angelina legally changed
her last name from Voight to Jolie.
I don't have a relationship with my father.
Wish I did.
I think it's wonderful if people can.
I think it's a beautiful, important relationship
to have in your life.
But I think if you don't have one, you don't,
and that's okay, too.
And I don't.
Jolie concentrated on raising Maddox.
I feel he has made me a woman.
He's also just made life so much more beautiful
and everything has more meaning.
And I just, I want the world for him,
and so I suddenly think about the future
and I think about life in such a,
in a very different way than I used to.
Coming up, Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie.
Brad's sweet.
He's a really great actor and he's just a,
he's a really good guy.
By May 2003, Angelina Jolie had some serious man trouble.
She divorced Billy Bob Thornton
and wasn't talking to her dad, John Voight.
One special guy didn't let Jolie down.
Her 21-month-old son, Maddox.
The greatest joy I've ever had.
I would trade everything in my life for him.
Oh, my God, in a second.
The 28-year-old single mom
also continued working with the United Nations.
She's traveled all over the world
on behalf of the people that are struggling
to get out of terrible problems,
bringing their message to the world.
One thing remained the same,
Angelina's commitment to acting.
In August 2003, she signed on for Mr. and Mrs. Smith,
an action comedy about a hitman and hitwoman
married to each other.
Brad Pitt was on board to play Mr. Smith.
In January 2004, production began on Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Jolie reportedly pulled down $20 million
to play a deadly assassin,
and she enjoyed a bonus.
Her partner in crime, Brad Pitt.
He's a really great actor, and he's just a...
He's a really good guy.
There was plenty of speculation
that Pitt and Jolie weren't just playing at being in love.
Pretty much as soon as they started filming,
the rumors about the chemistry
between Angelina and Brad started.
They were seen holding hands off set.
Jolie and Pitt both denied a romance.
Meanwhile, Brad's four-year marriage to Jennifer Aniston
was reportedly over.
Soon after New Year's 2005,
Brad and Jennifer Aniston announced their separation.
Almost right away, people started to talk
and speculate whether or not their breakup
had anything to do with the relationship
between Brad and Angelina.
In March 2005, Aniston filed for divorce.
That summer, the opening weekend box office
for Mr. and Mrs. Smith topped $50 million.
But the big story was Angelina and Brad.
The pair continued to deny rumors of a relationship.
Then in July 2005, more speculation.
Pitt accompanied Jolie to Ethiopia on a special mission.
Angelina became a mother for a second time.
She adopted a baby girl, and she named Zahara.
Pitt's divorce from Jennifer Aniston
became final in October.
In December, he and Angelina took another big step.
Brad filed papers to become the adoptive father
of Angelina's two children.
Then in January 2006,
while filming in the Dominican Republic,
Angelina dropped a bombshell.
Angelina is pregnant with Brad Pitt's child,
and she is due in the summer, she says.
On May 27, 2006, Angelina gave birth to daughter
Shiloh Nouvel Jolie Pitt.
That December, the couple celebrated
Pitt's Golden Globe nomination
for his role in the drama, Babel.
At the January 2007 awards ceremony,
Brad and Angelina hinted about having more kids.
How big is the family going to be?
Do we have a volume? Do we have a number?
We're thinking soccer team.
World Cup. Start our own country,
enter the World Cup, and dominate it.
Then, sad news.
Angelina's mother, Marshalene Bertrand,
died on January 27 after battling cancer.
She was 56.
Two months later, Brad's hoped-for soccer team
added another potential player.
On March 15, Angelina adopted
a three-year-old Vietnamese orphan
they named Pax Thien.
And there were more on the way.
In May 2008, the actress confirmed
that she and Brad were expecting twins.
On July 12, Angelina and Brad
welcomed the arrival of son Nox Leon
and daughter Vivienne Marshalene.
During the next three years,
the mother of six continued to star in films.
In 2011, she stepped behind the camera
to produce and direct her first drama,
In the Land of Blood and Honey,
about the Bosnian Civil War.
We all wanted to make this film
because we all want there to be dialogue in the region
and all these cast members from different sides of the conflict
wanted to come together and show unity.
And so, there was something more
that we were trying for.
In 2012, In the Land of Blood and Honey
was nominated for a Golden Globe
for Best Foreign Film.
Jolie had one more surprise in store.
On April 13, 2012,
after a seven-year romance,
Angelina and Brad announced their engagement.
A year later, Angelina made a shocking revelation.
On May 14, 2013,
in a New York Times op-ed piece,
Jolie disclosed that she underwent
a preventive double mastectomy and reconstruction.
The 37-year-old explained that tests showed
she carried a hereditary gene
which significantly increased her risk
of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
The actress came forward
so that others might benefit from her story.
Angelina was much more private
about her actions the following summer.
On August 23, 2014,
after nine years together,
she and Brad tied the knot.
The famous pair managed to keep their wedding secret
for several days before confirming the happy news.
Jolie and Pitt were married
in a chapel on their sprawling French estate.
The intimate ceremony was witnessed
by a small group of friends and relatives.
Although Jolie and her estranged father, John Voight,
made amends four years earlier,
the actor was not in attendance.
Still, the event was a family affair.
Maddox and Pax walked their mom down the aisle.
Zahara and Vivian were flower girls.
And Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers.
As a mom, an actress, and a global ambassador,
Angelina Jolie continues to amaze Hollywood
and the world.
She's got an aura.
She just has this other persona, this aura,
that very special people are gifted with.
You have it or you don't.
And she's done so many remarkable things.
I'm proud of her, what she's accomplished thus far.
I take a lesson from her in the way
that she goes ahead and does things.
I've done some wild things,
and I've always been very honest in my life.
But I hope that I'm also
doing some good things with my life.
