The RV American Tour continues to Washington DC. We were so lucky to get a private tour of the US Capital through our Arizona Congressmen David Schweikert. In this episode, you’ll see all the sights of Washington DC plus the underground Congress tunnels that lead to the House Gallery and US Library. We stayed at Capital KOA which was perfectly located near Washington and Annapolis. We included a link to the metro system so you can make getting into Washington easy.
Wait, um, by the way, that tower, oh wait, can you put the camera up just a tad, that camera, I mean, that is right there.
Once again, we are about four hours later than we expected.
When the White House Capitol said, would you like a 10.30 or a 2.30, immediately there was no question I went for the 2.30 tour.
We are off to the Capitol.
P.S., it's his birthday.
There is a dog, right? This is Sarge.
Oh, that's awesome.
No.
No, thank you so much.
ASU, woohoo, you made it.
Awesome.
It's so cool.
Today is my second day. I go to school at American nearby, and they sent me a list of congressmen who needed help.
I saw that David is in the committee for science, space, and technology, and that really interests me, so I decided to send my resume, and here I am.
I graduated college in May, and they had a job open, and they said, do you want it? And I said, yes.
I couldn't be happier. This is a great place to be young, interested in what's going on in the world. Everybody is so fascinating.
18 and a half feet tall. There's 13 stars around their head, representing the 13 colonies, and a bald eagle on top.
It goes straight down to the crypt, and then it goes straight up through the Statue of Freedom on top of the dome.
And then these four points, I don't know if you paid attention to the streets, the signs at all, every street either ends in northeast, northwest, southeast.
So it emanates from these four points right here, and so it all converges here at the Capitol. So you'll have first street northeast, first street northwest on either side.
As you can see, the bust is incomplete, and that is because the artist who was making the bust, when on the day that Abraham Lincoln was shot, he stopped.
And so that's why there's still some rock around his chin area.
And the shooter came into the Capitol, he made it as far as this building right here where we're standing, and Calhoun took a bullet for the United States of America.
Wow.
So there's two stories. The first is that there's a mysterious black cat that roams the Capitol, and he only appears the day before something bad is going to happen.
So people say they've seen him the day before JFK was shot. People say they saw him before 9-11. People say they saw him before a lot of different events have happened, but these are his little footprints.
My favorite story, though, is that the Capitol in its first era had a lot of rats running around, so they brought in cats to get rid of the rats.
But then they had a cat problem, and that's why they brought all the dogs into the Capitol, and that's why dogs are allowed into any of the offices.
It would have all those cats.
So my question is, was he here yesterday?
He was not here yesterday. You're good to go.
Okay, we had to drop our phones and all of that for a little while, and I want to tell you, it was so exciting. I was trying to memorize everything that was happening.
We went through the halls. We just left the house. They are deliberating over a bill, and everyone will be coming in shortly.
But to be in a room where the presidents have walked and so many momentous things have happened was out of control.
I mean, I literally have chills on my legs just talking about it to you right now. So neat.
But now we're going to go walk underground and go back over to David Schweikert's office, pick up our bags, and say thank you so much to our host, Molly, and continue our day here in DC.
I'm about to meet you and hear all about your trip. It sounds so fun. We'll follow here in the office. I have your little card, so it'll be perfect.
Have a safe trip.
We just ran across the Capitol, past the old Senate building, by the Supreme Court, into this mall area, by this pretty fountain, by that pretty old building right there, down these really old steps,
in front of this really cool water fountain, and down to the car here.
The only car on this road. Never a good sign.
Is there a parking ticket? Yes. No parking ticket.
But now I have to figure out why I am the only car here.
Wow, I'm so glad we went back to the car. Our car was parked in a tow-away zone after 4 o'clock. It was 4.30.
I'm sure they were calling the tow truck. That would have...
Secret service here.
Get in the back quickly, Mom!
You got the best birthday gift.
What was that? You didn't get towed.
Yes. Can you imagine getting my car towed on my birthday?
That would have not been good. That's why. It was a birthday.
It was a birthday gift.
Alex, our tour guide, it was Molly and Alex, and Alex told us that all the curbs here in Washington DC are made out of marble.
Most expensive curbs ever.
So now we're going to go see them all, and we're going to go check out things that are normally closed past 5 o'clock because that's what time it is now,
and take some cool pictures. Let's go!
They said you can see where they stopped the Washington Monument right there by the two different colors of stone.
And they stopped right there at the Civil War.
No kidding. Yeah.
You're taking a unicorn photo? Uh-huh.
Yeah, was that not the coolest sunset ever? Oh, yeah. Wait. Let's see if I can get...
And then what's also... Oh, my gosh. Look at that. Amazing.
That has no filter on it. No filter. Not that we filter our photos.
Anyway, then the other thing that's cool is the sun is setting on the Capitol.
Puppies. Look at this. On the Capitol.
You can't really see it right now, but the light, the sunset is lighting up the windows in the Capitol.
I'll tell you what. This isn't an official Mark and Tori's Tips Take Washington Edition,
but we would give you the tip that all the monuments close around 5.30.
So what would be an awesome plan is to do the monuments and see and look around Washington
and then come out here on the Mall after 5.30, and it's probably approaching 7 o'clock right now,
and stay out here until 7 o'clock where the sunset can just start falling on all these monuments.
So pretty. So pretty. So cool.
Best burrito I've ever had in my life.
Four Square is phenomenal because you pull up in front of a little shack like that,
and it gives you trust to know that it's good.
Look at that. Oh, that looks good. Homemade sausage and everything.
Okay, here we are at the beautiful KOA in Washington, D.C.,
and as you probably know, a couple days ago was my birthday,
and Trish wanted to get me something that was not only something I would like,
but something that would make our channel even better,
something that would make the videos just kind of take them to a, let's say, higher level.
Now you probably know what I'm talking about, but Caleb, bring it in.
All I do is win, win, win.
We're going to get this thing unboxed, and then we're going to read the instructions twice.
Then we're going to watch some YouTube, and then we're going to get this thing up in the air,
and one of the reasons we got this now in D.C. is because we're about to head down to North Carolina,
Outer Banks, South Carolina, not Charleston, yeah, Charleston,
before we go down to St. Augustine, Key West, Destin, all sorts of really cool places
where something like this would come in really kind of handy.
So stay tuned for drone footage.
Okay, we are here at the Metro just outside of the KOA,
and based on our experience in Washington on Wednesday, we got smart.
We realized that the two-hour parking limit was a huge inhibitor to our fun in Washington.
It kind of created this edge and urgency to everything we were doing
because we had to get back within two hours.
So we went online, and we figured out the Metro system.
So this time we drove from the KOA, KOA Capital I believe it's called,
about 20 minutes to this Metro station, and I'll put the Metro station down below.
But anyway, there's a whole line that goes into the city.
Parking for the entire day is like anywhere between $5 to $8,
and then we're going to get on the Metro and to go right into the Capital.
And the Metro tickets were like $3 per person.
And we don't have to worry about parking. We don't have to worry about the car.
And, I don't know, it just seemed like that would be the way to go.
And up here on your left is the Air and Science Space Museum.
Please keep your hands and feet to yourselves, and stop hanging on your mother when you walk.
Please walk in a straight line, and try not to be a nuisance or an obstruction to your family members or siblings.
Please stop bringing up the same subject over and over and over again,
hoping for a different result from your mother.
Too many germs for me, but I'll have to ask one of the kids what it was like to touch the moon.
Because they touch everything.
What did it feel like?
Soft. Just soft.
Soft. Felt soft.
Did it feel germy?
Now I'm ready to like go walk around and see the memorials.
You know, Lincoln, Jefferson.
Okay, cool. Yeah.
Let's go do that. So let's eat something and get a little energy and then go do that.
Okay.
We're headed over to the National Archives to go see where the Constitution is.
That's pretty cool.
Well, we just saw the Constitution of the United States.
I thought that was the best one.
They didn't let me take you. I apologize for that.
But I couldn't even sneak you in. And I'm not above it.
I'm not above it. I will sneak you in.
When they say no, I say, don't worry about it.
But this was not the place to be sneaking. The security guards had guns.
We totally love that you're following, you're here with us.
We're going on this adventure together.
So, you know, give us a thumbs up, subscribe, tell your friends.
Because it makes a difference that our videos get watched.
This guy right here spends a lot of time doing it.
Only because I love it.
Only because he loves it and it's so much fun.
But just like always, he's supporting all of our dreams to go around the U.S.
And it's super fun to have you with us.
So, thank you so much.
That was good.
Way better than I thought it would be.
