But there's news out of the NBA.
And this was probably one of the more surprising moves that I've seen thus far.
Nate McMillan of the Indiana Patriots was fired.
This was confusing to many people because just a couple of weeks ago, the Patriots signed
him to an extension.
It was reported that this was a two-year extension.
It wasn't a two-year extension, it was actually just a one-year extension.
And so many people believe that what the Patriots did was because Nate McMillan was so great
to the Patriot organization, what they did was they gave him an extension.
So when they did fire him, they will owe him salaries, just some extra salary on his way
out the door because more than likely he'll probably be out of coaching for a year or
two.
So again, I think that's a really, really honorable move by the Indiana Patriots.
They've shown to be a very, very loyal franchise to players and coaches who do right by them.
I think Nate McMillan's a really good coach.
His entire time in Indiana, he had those guys playing above expectation.
He dealt with a lot of different things, even going into the playoff bubble.
His best player, Demontis Sabonis, was injured.
One of his starters, Jeremy Lamb, out.
Victor Oladipo still is trying to recover from a serious quad injury.
He had to heavily rely on TJ Warren to pick up the scoring load, and there were a lot
of guys on that bench that really needed to pick up the slack.
They did a good job of carrying the Pacers into the playoffs.
They just didn't have enough against the Miami Heat.
The Miami Team's just one of the more experienced teams in the league.
That team was able, just from the starters to the bench, they just were able to overwhelm
the Indiana Pacers with skill, experience, and depth.
So I don't really feel that the sweep was to blame for Nate McMillan.
I think this firing was primarily due to the fact that the Pacers just want to go in a
new direction.
Nate McMillan is considered to be one of the more old school type of coaches.
His offense sometimes can be extremely stagnant.
It's more traditional.
So you're looking at a team like the Pacers, they're running a lot of sets.
You don't really see them playing a lot of iso ball.
You don't really see them going five out.
They run a lot of traditional sets, even at times running Princeton sets.
A lot of players on other teams would have balked at the idea of doing that.
None of the players balked at it.
Everybody bought in.
That's why there was so much success down there.
But at the end of the day, man, I think the Pacers just wanted to go in a different direction.
I think there are some names floating around out there that may be in the market later
on down the line that could really help this team excel and be successful, maybe push them
into the playoffs.
This was, again, this was a firing that surprised everyone.
I thought Nate McMillan would at least have one more year in Indiana to prove himself
when he did have everybody back healthy.
But again, this is the NBA.
It's a tough business.
Unfortunately, we lose another African-American coach.
But Nate McMillan, unlike Alvin Gentry, as he was fired from New Orleans, I feel like
he's going to have another job in the NBA.
He'll probably be an assistant over the next year or two, but I can definitely see him
getting another head coaching job in the NBA very, very soon.
So again, Nate McMillan out as the coach of the Indiana Pacers, but I do like how the
Pacers gracefully allowed him to bow out.
They did sign him to an extension, so he would have some money on the way out the door.
Again, that's something that, again, to players that are free agents, that's what you want
to look for in a franchise.
This is how you know you're dealing with a franchise that's extremely loyal to players
and coaches.
And it's just been surprising over the years that we see so little free agent signings
to the Indiana Pacers.
Again, this is one of the most loyal franchises.
It has one of the most passionate fan bases.
Again, you could be a hated player.
You could come into the Indiana Pacer franchise, you'll be loved from the day you get there.
You'll be loved the day you leave.
And that's just how it is when you're an Indiana Pacer.
So big up to the Pacer organization.
Big up to Nate McMillan.
Again, it's unfortunate that they had to part ways, but they did it the right way.
And I do appreciate that out of the Pacer organization.
Now out of some other news with regards to coaching, we have Brett Brown.
Brett Brown was recently fired.
He was fired on Monday, relieved of his duties as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.
Now Brett Brown has been the coach of the Philadelphia 76ers through some turbulent
times, through some turbulent decisions.
Everybody knows what the process is.
You know, tanking, getting draft picks, trading draft picks, making bad draft picks, making
great draft picks, dealing with injuries to both of your star draft picks, Ben Simmons
and Joel Embiid, who both had to sit out an entire year before they played NBA basketball.
I mean, Brett Brown has dealt with a myriad of issues, and I just think that he really
lost his voice in the locker room.
This became very, very obvious when Jimmy Butler did not resign with the Philadelphia
76ers, although they really made a strong run in the playoffs that year and really were
just one shot away from going to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they probably would
have moved on to the NBA Finals.
And it's just unfortunate.
It's an unfortunate situation.
He's definitely a great coach.
He's one of those coaches that stem from Greg Popovich and all of those other great assistants.
But I just think that, you know, when a coach is with a team for so long, the same as we
see with Greg Popovich, what tends to happen is that you lose your voice.
And if you're a star player on your team, if the star player on your team is not the
lead in helping you carry that voice to all of the other players, then it's just going
to be a trickle-down effect where players are just not going to listen, players are
going to revolt, players are going to be hard-headed, and they're not going to be as receptive to
some of the things that you're trying to introduce or implement into the team.
So they did deal with an unfortunate injury.
I actually had picked the Philadelphia 76ers to get to the NBA Finals prior to the injury
of Ben Simmons, and it just seems like once Ben Simmons got injured, everything else just
started to fall apart.
Josh Richardson didn't play well, Al Horford played terrible, Joel Embiid didn't play up
to expectation.
There was a lot of internal team fighting.
We saw the on-court altercation between Joel Embiid and Shaq Milton.
Those are the types of things that can't really happen, and I think there was just so many
mountain frustrations because not only has the coaching staff felt the pressure of all
of the expectations, the players do as well, too.
And I just think things just started to come to the head.
Again, I don't put all the blame on Brett Brown.
There were a lot of things, a lot of moves that were made.
I know that Brett Brown, he did not want to draft Markel Foltz.
He was definitely against it, that the drafting of Markel Foltz was an Elton Brand move.
And again, I think sometimes you have to listen to your coaches, man.
The primary reason why he said he wasn't big on Markel Foltz was because he wasn't a winner
in college.
He wanted to bring in somebody who was a winner, who had a winning tradition, and Markel Foltz
in college, if you guys weren't aware of it, his team, he played at Washington, his team
was extremely bad.
He put up big numbers on a very bad college team, and again, even going into this draft,
I think that's something you really want to be mindful of.
I think the player where that correlates most with is going to be Anthony Edwards.
He plays on a team in Georgia that just didn't have success, did not have very much success
at all.
And to have the best player in college basketball, Anthony Edwards, and not have success, that's
a testament to the player.
When we look at James Wiseman, he only played a few games for Memphis, but how did he impact
that Memphis team?
That Memphis team looked like they were a Final Four team when James Wiseman was on
the roster and when he was on the court playing.
This is why I'm really high on James Wiseman.
This is why I'm really high on Lamello Bong, these guys that just energized the team.
But again, that all translates into the Philadelphia 76ers.
Brent Brown wanted to bring in someone different, so he kind of clashed with Elton Brand there.
The lack of success that they had in the bubble, even though Ben Simmons was hurt, I felt like
they could have been a lot more competitive.
They should not have gotten swept by the Boston Celtics, a Boston Celtics team that actually
struggles to score the ball themselves, nor do they have a dominant big like Joel Embiid.
So again, it's unfortunate that Brent Brown had to get fired, but again, I think these
moves have to be made.
Really curious to see what coach they bring into Philadelphia next.
I'm hearing Becky Hammond, the assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.
The one thing we know is her voice resonates.
We saw her voice resonate in summer league play when Popovich allowed her to coach the
summer league team, and what did they do?
They won the summer league championship.
The players were very receptive to her voice, the players played for her, and again, it
doesn't matter what offense you're running, what defense you're running, if your players
want to play for you, you can get them to jump, to climb mountains.
You can get them to go out and do anything, and it's going to translate onto the basketball
court.
Hey, that's all the news for today, man.
We just had to touch on some coaching news.
As teams are eliminated from the playoffs, decisions will be made.
Next up is going to be for the Houston Rockets.
We know the Houston Rockets did not give Mark DeAntonio an extension.
He's basically on a year-by-year basis, and so we just got to see how things go.
Will Houston make a deep run?
Will they make it to the finals?
Will they win it all?
If they don't win it all, is Mark DeAntonio next, and if he is next, what other teams
are looking at Mark DeAntonio?
Again, these are things we'll be watching, we'll be mindful of, so again, if you guys
have any comments, questions, or concerns, make sure you hit us up in the comments.
