Today is a National Donut Day and bakeries and cafes nationwide are celebrating with deals.
And today's Jason Blair caught up with a shop that makes a special type of donut
that's been gaining popularity. Take a look.
Some people like them for breakfast, some people anytime, but whatever the case,
the popular fried treat has been getting its own National Day since 1938.
National Donut Day was established to honor the Salvation Army's volunteers
who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
Since then, the holiday has been held on the first Friday in June.
Popular chains are offering deals. This Friday,
Krispy Kreme has a no-purchase necessary deal with a free donut of your choice.
They also have a buy one dozen and get a second dozen donuts for $2.
Dunkin' Donuts are giving customers a free classic donut of their choice,
with any drink purchase on Friday.
Now for National Donut Day, I don't want to leave out one of my personal favorites,
the mochi donut. Now it's a combination of Japanese mochi and American-style donuts.
So mochi donut is a little different than a regular traditional donut because we make
mochi, the rice flour, into the donut. So it makes the texture a little more chewier and lighter.
Hannah and Daniel have been running Mochi Nut in Leesburg, Virginia, for about two years.
They rotate their flavors, but said there are a few that are always a hit.
A lot of people love the churro, cookies and cream. People who love
fruity flavors like mango and strawberry.
They're very doughy and they have great flavor, especially with the frosting.
And they have little sections that you can take apart rather than eating a whole.
Yeah, that's why I like them more than regular donuts.
Yeah.
There's a lot less stuff than the other one. The other one's just a bunch of like
bread. This one's just a lot better.
The mochi donut is a somewhat newer concept.
The current widely used version can be traced back to Hawaii in the 1990s.
