It's super rainy today. I'm putting on a hat because I have not showered since Thursday
and I'm starting to look pretty scraggly. I'm gonna see how much power we have because
it's been raining all night. Yesterday it was raining and I want to make coffee but
it takes a lot of power so... But there's also like a little coffee convenience shop here. I've
really liked staying here. I'm not entirely sure if I can but there's no no overnight parking
signs. It is so peaceful falling asleep next to the ocean. It's the sound of the waves. My plan
was to shoot the solar eclipse today but if the weather stays like this that's probably not gonna
happen so I might have to change my plans. The nearest shower is a 40 minute drive one way.
It might make more sense to just start heading south and find a plan of fitness on the way
because the one that's 40 minutes away I'd have to backtrack in the opposite direction
so that's like an hour and a half of driving for a shower.
Anyway let's start the day.
The big day is here and you won't be the only one staring at the sun.
Millions of Americans have experienced that today.
Hold up. I have a backup plan. I am going to try to find a coffee shop in the southwest.
I'm going to the shop to get some coffee, chocolate almonds, and a protein bar.
Ah where to next?
Oh my gosh it's so good. It's so good. I just realized that I'm also probably almost out of
water. Oh no that's not good. It's the camera drawer. It's so chaotic.
I thought it was really broken for a second there. Not the ideal.
Oh hello fellow photographer. That was that was a cute guy. I kind of want to turn back
but that would be weird. We are here. We have arrived. This is my daily work commute. Literally
no one is here because it's raining but the view is still pretty. This is going to be a little bit
challenging to film because I have my bike now. I had my bike in my storage unit for the last like
four months I would say or three months but I want it for where I'm going so every time I
want to use my heater I have to relocate my bike and it's very cramped in here.
Take pictures of every single receipt for tax purposes. Battery 80 percent. Connected to.
Okay it is already getting cold so I'm gonna move the bike, turn on the heater so it gets nice and
far behind on emails. I've been here before without this vboost. No internet but with it
I can do everything I need to do. It's actually why I haven't gotten a starlink yet because
imagine if I did have a starlink right now I would have to, unless I had it permanently mounted,
I would have to go outside and set it up. That would be a huge pain because it's raining
and if it weren't raining having a starlink out kind of attracts attention which I don't like.
Every time I leave I have to pack it up put it away. They're huge. My friend has one and I used
it briefly and I was just like the amount of storage it would require just wouldn't be worth
it to me. Unless I was living mostly out in the canyonlands or Nevada or Utah where it like really
makes sense because there's no tree cover and you know you're like boondocking for days or even
weeks at a time that makes sense but I just hotspot my laptop and my ipad and I only pay
the sun is already halfway covered up. I am debating going outside and filming down by the
coast just to see if there's like a noticeable change when the totality does happen. There'll
still be a sliver of light here but it might be cool but it's also dumping rain so it'll be really
cold. I will be soaking wet and so will my camera gear and we have another minimum hour to go.
Like it's not a it's not a quick process. Should I do it? I think I'm gonna have to. Oh that was
dangerous. Here's my mic. I'm just gonna try see what there is to see and take you with me.
So for this entire next sequence filmed outside my mic wasn't plugged in and the only clip I
managed to get with original sound was this one from my iphone. So it's definitely still raining
quite a lot so I found a spot where I can set up my camera and it's a little bit protected from
the rain underneath that arch. So that's the composition I have because otherwise my lens
will just get full of rain spots and I of course forgot to bring anything to clean off my lens so
this is our setup. What you're hearing now is a compilation of layered tracks from videos I've
shot in the past at this same location but still the end result is kind of unnatural sounding.
So what to do when you have a pile of footage and no sound? You can re-film it, scrap it,
or add music. Let's take this song for example. It's a little bit dramatic.
Builds anticipation. It gives you the impression that something big is about to happen which can
work if you can follow through. But this is footage I filmed during last year's solar eclipse.
This year my view was somewhat anti-climatic so let's try a different track.
Even though these scenes are a bit gray, kind of downcast, there's also an element of play
and I think this song does a nice job of bringing those two together.
Choosing the right music is key and with Musicbed I'm able to find tracks that
not only support my story but also help build connection. For a limited time Musicbed is
offering you a free 14-day trial using the link in my description. Let me know in the comments below
if you've already signed up or made the switch and if you have I'm curious which Musicbed song
would you choose for a rainy day by the sea. You guys know how I just did that video about how to
film yourself. Well imagine that plus a giant bike in the way which limits your movement
and the pouring rain. Like my gear is completely soaked, my lens is fogged.
This is total chaos. Even though I filmed coming into the van three times it's still pretty terrible
because I was completely out of focus and the rustling of my jacket was like it made the sound
unbearable. But I draw the line at three times. I am not filming it a fourth because every time I
film it I let more water into the van and I make the situation worse. So as far as the solar eclipse
goes, not much to see here. I think it was just there was still enough light visible that it
wasn't really a thing and because it was a stormy day anyways it was already kind of dark so but
that's okay. I'm glad I went out there. There were a few other people so good time. Now I am soaking
wet. My gear is soaking wet. My van is a muddy mess and I am receiving emails related to deadlines
that I need to get on so I gotta get to work. Oh my gosh I don't even know where to hang this stuff.
Everything is wet. So I've been working and now I'm making some lunch. Pasta. But I gotta tell you
guys the truth like it is so foggy in here. It's just condensation everywhere. I have the fan going.
I have the heater going so it's like warm in here and just non-stop rain outside and now that I'm
also cooking oh my gosh the condensation is it's not good. Like this is how you get mold problems
and if you guys have been here for any length of time you know we do not appreciate mold around
here. So I'm trying to decide if I want to stick around because it's not going to stop raining for
the next 20 hours. Drawing left-handed is interesting.
