12 months ago we drove away from Uluru knowing that we had to come back to this place.
Being in the vast red landscapes, under the pink skies and in the desert air always seems to give
us a hard reset that's pretty hard to find elsewhere. It's cold. Good morning from Uluru.
It is a very chilly five degrees this morning. That desert air really gets you. We were saying
on the way that we would love to have puffer jackets and mittens with us right about now
but sweaters will have to do. We're starting off here at the sunrise viewing platform.
The sun should rise in about five to ten minutes. Busy.
There's also this pathway that you can walk around so that you can see Uluru from all
different spots so if you want to see it from the bottom you come down here or the top you
go to the viewing platform. This is a really cool spot though because you see Katajuta in the
distance and the light on her in the morning is just so beautiful and also we found it's a really
cool perspective of Uluru because you really see just how flat the land is everywhere else.
It almost looks like the rock was just put here.
We left our gas bag at camp but luckily Jordan found this hiking butane gas canister.
We haven't used it in ages so we weren't sure that we had it so I'm very glad we do.
Imagine going hiking and this is what you carry.
We're just praying to the coffee gods that bring us this morning's cup.
It rains down. It rains down its goodness into our mongolians.
Drinking. That's what we're doing right now.
We're at one of my favorite spots here at Uluru. The sun's shining. There's a little bit of wind
today. Last year when we were here we did the bike and walked around the entire rock
and it's pretty cool to see the rock up close and personal. There's a lot of parts that are
sacred so you're not allowed filming or taking photos of any of it. I'm really excited for
tomorrow night too because I'm going to do something that I really wanted to do last
year when we were here but I didn't have time unfortunately. So I'm going to book a helicopter
flight at sunset over Uluru and Kata Tjuta. It also happens to be the full moon tomorrow which
is going to make it extra special. Jordan thinks that I'm going to do it alone because it is kind
of expensive to do but he doesn't know yet but he's coming along for the ride as well.
We're treating ourselves tonight. We're grabbing a pizza and some brews and we're going to go
watch the sunset in the back of the van at Uluru. I think this is Jordan's favorite
thing to do. Your idea but it's my favorite thing to do. You need to bring your campground paper
to the shop to purchase any alcohol. I like this hat. Can I get it? Sure.
I like it. A couple of happy hats. I think we should get them.
I love it. I can go sun smart or I can go deluxe mode back like that.
Which pizza are we getting? We're gonna get a Mexicana.
Smells good. Yeah it looks magic. It's absolutely epic.
How pumped are you right now? I've always thought that the moon looks like a bunny
so wherever it's shaded dark is like the outline of a bunny but Jordan doesn't see it. No I didn't
see it. I'm struggling. There's the last light on the rock. The last light to pizza. It's so cool
seeing the last light on the rock. It glows this really intense red color and then it goes dark
and then for a few minutes it gets really bright again as the sky is really pastel. It's so cool.
We're walking to town to get some coffees. There was the biggest storm last night.
Wasn't there Jordan? It was like thunder and lightning and it was pouring rain
but it's very clear this morning. Coffee and we could help ourselves and got some breakfast.
How good? Want some bacon?
From all the rain last night it has stained our canvas on our tent
so I think there was some red dirt sitting on it and with the mixture of the rain it's just
stuck on there. We're gonna try and scrub it off because it's looking really spotty.
We have clean detail and dish soap and lots of water and our dish washing scrubby.
Okay I think this should do us and that one. Just do one panel at a time.
It's gonna be hard to get up the top I guess.
What have you been up to? You have red dirt all over your face.
Red dirt everywhere.
Yeah I was actually thinking that getting drenched but it's looking a little bit better.
On the first two sides we just sprayed the dishwashing liquid all over the
tent and it left these brown stains on it. Who would think the dishwashing liquid would leave
dark spots?
It's 4 30 now and we're getting picked up at 5 pm to take our helicopter flight over Uluru at
sunset. Oh my gosh I'm feeling really excited but also a little bit nervous.
I'm gonna go tell Jordan that he's coming along for the ride to see what he says.
Hey Jordan you have 20 minutes to get ready because you're coming on the helicopter flight.
Are you serious? Yeah. I'm not ready. Yeah. Don't mess with me today. You're coming come on. Really?
Let's go. Like 20 minutes? Yeah they're picking us up at the front. You didn't know why did I
later to tell me?
Let's go. But it'll be our little limousine ride down into the Uluru Aboriginal National Park.
Now we picked you up nice and early this evening so that we can get you here with plenty of time.
We've got the exact minute that we're looking to take off from. We've kind of worked it out to a
fine art. It's like we've done it before but we've got certain places we want to be at certain times.
Grab a little seat just here. Watch your head there. Go ahead pop your seat belt on.
It's a lap belt style seat belt. And come on in. We're out of seat in the front.
That was so crazy. I almost peed my pants. I almost did too but because I have to pee actually.
But wow the full moon is so big and bright. I think that might be up there with the best
experiences we've ever done. Yeah I think it has to be. That was crazy. It's definitely worth the
money and I'm glad you came too. Yeah me too. And Katajudah that just wasn't like I have no words.
It was just that good. The next day the moon looked just as big if not bigger than the day before.
For a long time I've had this obsession with the moon and this one had to be one of the most
beautiful I've ever seen. The contrast against the vast expanse of the desert made her look so big
and bright. One of the joys of living on the road is the opportunity to witness the moon's
ever-changing phases. Regardless of my awareness of the day or even the month
looking up at the moon reminds me of the places I've been during each phase.
