Salut! In this video, we're going to be learning French with Beauty and the Beast.
Not only is this a French fairy tale, originally called La Belle et la Bête,
but our heroine's name is French too, Belle. Let's get started!
The word sage means good or well-behaved. It's very often applied to small children.
For example, French parents will often tell their children,
Sois sage!
So Belle is saying that it's a quiet, well-behaved town.
Nuage means cloud. So the whole sentence is,
Se tienne is the present form of the verb se tenir, which means to hold oneself or to stand.
For example, se tenir droit means to stand up straight.
Immobile is a word that we also have in English, immobile.
Although in this context, we'd be more likely to say something like still.
So the whole sentence would be,
De means starting from a point in time or space.
So, de le matin means starting in the morning or starting first thing in the morning.
Because this word doesn't really exist in English, it can be hard to get a hang of it first.
But if you're watching this video on FluentU,
you can click on the word des in the subtitles and see the definition,
example sentences, and even example videos that show you how the word is used in context.
Bavarde comes from the verb bavarder,
which happens to be one of my favorite French words because it's just so much fun to say.
It means to chat, especially to chat with friends about nothing in particular.
It can also mean to gossip.
The whole sentence is,
I think you got that one.
Next!
Garni means garnished or topped with.
Here, it's the baker's tray that is well garnished with the bread from his bakery.
The bread is described as
But that doesn't mean that it's stale.
is a good thing.
It means good old.
Just the way we might talk about the good old days,
the French talk about
is since we arrived.
means since.
Notice that the e has been replaced by an apostrophe
since the next word starts with a vowel.
This is called an elision.
We have the same thing in English.
When you say I'm instead of I am, that's an elision.
Basically, elisions just make things easier to pronounce.
When you click on depuis que in the interactive subtitles on FluentU,
you can watch video examples that show you how native French speakers use this elision.
Les gens me sont étrangers means people are strangers to me.
But notice that the word order is different than in English.
The pronoun me goes before the verb, not after it.
means in the streets that cry with boredom.
So the whole sentence is
is a tricky word to master because there's no English equivalent.
It's defined as to or at, the home of or practice of.
But what does that really mean?
If we click on the word chez in FluentU, we can see an example sentence.
I'm going to the doctor's office.
And we can watch video examples.
Watching example videos like this is a great way to get comfortable with new vocabulary
because it allows you to see how it's used in a real life context.
You can watch the whole song from Beauty and the Beast on FluentU
and use the interactive subtitles to break down the lyrics just like this.

means about or literally with regards to.
For example, you might hear
is a great French expression.
Literally, it means and make it jump.
But what it really translates to in English is and make it snappy.
By the way, if you're worried about forgetting all this new vocab
or great expressions like

literally means her head elsewhere.
But it's a common expression that means that somebody is distracted
or that their thoughts are elsewhere.
This is a slightly bizarre analogy.
Literally, it means that bold look of a wild cat under a parasol.
So is that like or maybe more like jokes aside,
I think the idea is that the villagers see Belle as a wild cat
because she's bold and independent,
even though her facade is proper and innocent like a parasol.
So she's almost like a wolf in sheep's clothing or something.
means she's always in the clouds.
But more often, you'll hear the expression
which means that your head is in the clouds or that you're not paying attention.
often means good or well.
But in this context, it's an intensifier meaning truly or really.
For example,
would be a really fresh baguette.
means say hello to the family.
is a conjugation of the verb
which means to greet someone.
You're probably already familiar with the related word
which is a common way to say hi, especially among friends.
comes from the verb
which means to kiss or to hug someone.
In this case, though,
is more like say hello to your wife for me or give my regards to your wife.
means you want to ruin us.
But basically, it just means that something's too expensive.
I want to live something other than this life.
