At the beginning of October, we set out on a 262KM - 11 day hike in South West Victoria known as the Great South West Walk (GSWW). This hike begins in Portland and travels through a variety of scenery such as forests, beaches and capes and bays. This is part 1 of our journey from our home city to the first campsite on the GSWW (Cubby's Camp). ----------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM: @laurenandscott_ / laurenandscott_

CONTACT US: [email protected] ----------------------------------------------------------- We’re Scott & Lauren, a couple from Melbourne in Australia! Our passion for travelling, backpacking and hiking started back in July of 2017 when we headed off to Europe for a 6-month backpacking trip, which would ultimately change our lives. After returning in January 2018, the "standard" post-travel emotions hit.
We both decided we would knuckle down and try and save as much money as possible before jetting off again to see more of this beautiful world. Our first stop was Atlanta in Georgia, USA - where we were meant to be thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail at the beginning in March 2020, but COVID-19 forced us back home...sadly. But, we have more adventures planned inside our home country. Stay tuned. #Hiking#AUSTRALIA
Passengers are reminded, train be fitted with power assist doors. Seat doors cannot be opened until the train has come to a complete stop at the platform.
That first leg of the journey is done. Two and a half hours on the train to Warrnambool.
Now we're ready to get an hour and a half bus to Portland.
Oh, morning sir.
Oh, they've got the door closed on me there.
So I was only on the train, wasn't I?
Yeah, very fast. Usually when I get very bored.
I had a sleepless night.
Their phones were off, so she thought it might be tough, but it's very easy.
Nice scenery, very green.
Lots of cows, lots of sheep.
Yeah, lots of sheep. And cows.
Yeah, sounds good.
Honestly, they've locked off the first load of front seats there, where we wanted to sit.
Not sure why.
So we're five or six rows back. It's not too bad, but first seat's always better, isn't it?
Yeah.
Thank you.
Good yourself?
Yeah, I think it's in that one.
In the middle.
Oh, middle. Sorry.
Thank you. It's probably heavy.
Thank you. Appreciate that.
Have a good day.
Yeah, I know.
Alright, we've made it to Portland.
We got off the bus to some pouring rain.
We headed into the Tourist Information Centre to get ourselves a map.
They, unfortunately, didn't have one.
So we have this beautiful map to go off.
So we're starting the Great Southwest Walk from Portland,
and we're heading in towards the forest area.
Our first campsite is 20km from here called Cubbies.
So hopefully we get there before dark.
We should probably give more information on the Great Southwest Walk.
It's 252km. We didn't tell you that.
It starts in Portland and goes on a massive loop around, through the forest,
back on towards the beach, ending back in Portland.
It's like a big circle.
I really want to see a wombat.
But it says I'll probably see an echidna.
I'm probably most excited to see snakes.
Do you want to see a snake? Lots of kangaroos.
Kookaburras?
And I'm also excited to see the coastline coming back into Portland.
Yeah.
So, we may or may not be 10km.
No, just less than 10km, I think.
We've so far walked on muddy pubs, inner city pubs,
grass, sand, a bit of everything.
Now we're on a driveway of sorts.
There was a lady who actually was camping on the side
who pulled up in her car and asked us if we wanted a shot of us walking away
and she'd bring our camera bag, which was really lovely.
And otherwise, we're hoping to make camp by 6pm.
And the sun has come out, so woohoo!
Phew, you were struggling.
Jump!
Alright, you take the camera.
Cheers.
Oh!
It feels like I'm going to go head over biscuit or something like that.
Yeah, I know, right?
How stable is this?
I feel like it was pretty stable.
Like...
Did you touch that?
It's actually electric.
Stop it.
I just took all my camera gear out of my bag
and the power banks, two power banks, like 500g each.
So heavy, I gave them to Lauren.
So now she's carrying like an extra kilo and a half
and I've just got the camera out of my bag now
and I've lost the power banks, so now I'm...
Riding up the hill.
Yeah, two kilos lighter than I originally was.
So I'm fine.
I'm fast.
See ya!
What was that?
Seems like something somewhere in Echidna would be.
Oh, I hope I can see in Echidna.
Oh yeah, the wind as well, which is good.
This is the beginning of the forest part if you're wondering what it looks like.
Actually, it's quite nice.
Sure is.
We kind of, well, we didn't get lost.
We came onto another main road, straight out of the forest
and we couldn't see any of the Great South West walk
and bread triangle things.
So we're walking, where are we going, where are we going?
We've gone onto a highway.
Turns out this power work throws everything at ya.
You've got highways, forests, beach...
Farm.
G'day fellas.
It's intriguing.
People's driveways.
I don't know if you can see him.
Right there, look, he's staring at me.
I wish my lens zoomed in a bit more.
Isn't he beautiful?
Oh, he's up on his two feet.
He's big.
He looks big.
Oh, look at him.
Look at that.
Oh, aren't they just amazing?
And that is exactly why they are my favourite animal.
Glorious creatures.
Until they start boxing you on their feet and that.
And then with their tail.
Scary.
Besides that, they're good.
Boys!
Where are you going?
Oh, I don't smell that bad just yet.
It's only been half a day.
I don't think they like me alone.
Oh, hello, Bella Collie.
They didn't want to say hello to me.
Quite rude, I thought.
I was really looking forward to seeing them.
Hello, down there.
Hello, up there.
What's up?
Maybe having fun?
Yeah.
So we passed this train rail, I don't know, 35 minutes ago.
And it took us into a little bit of forest.
And we thought, here we go, we're going to be into the forest now.
Away from everything.
But then that little forest just led us straight back to the train tracks.
And now we're walking along here for God knows how long.
So who knows where we end up.
But we haven't really left civilization yet.
There's been lots of houses and roads and traffic.
So different than what we thought it would be so far.
But it's only the first day.
It's taken a while, but after five hours of hiking,
we've made it to our first campsite, Chubby's Camp.
And there's no one here but us.
Lauren's very excited.
She's sore.
Sore feet, sore legs.
But that's expected to be the first day.
Oh, no, we're very happy to reach camp.
It's about 6.30 p.m.
We're going to cook some dinner, set up the tent,
and just sit back and relax in this little hut here by ourselves.
We're super close.
The art of mi goreng.
First, bamboo.
Oh, it smells delicious.
I'm like, you're sour cream.
I feel like I remember mi goreng being really spicy,
like I shouldn't put all the chili sauce in it.
You've got to chuck it all in.
You have to chuck it all in.
Yep, for sure.
Yeah.
So many components.
Oh, hot damn.
Hot diggity, isn't it?
No idea.
I'm just so excited.
Yeah?
Yeah, so good.
Maybe some more chili sauce.
Oh, I knew you'd go back for it.
Again.
You can never have enough chili sauce.
It's worth the wait.
Yeah, it was actually.
How was the juice at the end?
Yep.
