Hey Everyone! I apologize for my absence this week. My mobile wifi router stopped working and I had to do a 3 day work assignment away from town so I've been out of pocket. Finished everything up this morning and came into town....everything is closed! Oh well, it's not like I'm dying to hang out with humans anyway. :) Hope you all are staying healthy during this current health crisis. Have a great weekend! ~ Brian
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFF-GRID AND SELF SUFFICIENT HOMESTEADING
Definition of "Off-Grid": Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities.
Self-sufficient means needing no outside help in satisfying one's basic needs, especially about the production of food, and homesteading means living a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. So by those definitions, the key to homesteading is learning to be self-sufficient. #Overlanding#Camping#Colorado
Alright, we're out looking for a new campsite and
I'm in a new-to-me area and came across these rocks up here. I want to check them out real quick. So
This is a pretty unique looking
See I was driving along and then all of a sudden I look up and I see these
rocks
With these massive holes in them
So naturally I got to come check it out
Okay, so it's not all the way through
It's still pretty wild though, then you got that one over there
Let's go check out
Check out some areas over here. The wind protection is really good, which is what we want
Because it's gonna be really bad wind tomorrow. So we're gonna go up over in that section
right there and
see
If there's a good campsite with a nice view
But yeah, good protection. If not, then we'll go to one of our sites that we've already been to before.
I don't know if you can really tell but
These rocks that are like right here and right here
Like over there. Those are massive boulders that are stuck that were stuck in
the lava flow as it was coming down because this is like a massive massive lava flow and
I'm in this little canyon right now, but this is really cool
Check it out, it's been snowing
Got the stove totally pumping right now. It's about 3 a.m.
Just woke up to start the stove. So I decided to really crank it full of
wood
So much I get in there right now. Yeah some cedar and the rest of it's pinyon pine
so
We'll see how the little stove performs, but so far it's been pretty mighty
Alright, we'll see at sunrise
That sounded like a freight train in here all night last night, so didn't get any sleep partly was up at 2
I think I took that film segment at 330 and been up ever since but wanted to go out this morning and check the snow
and so
Use the little Reflectix heat barrier shield right there
In front of the window or in front of the door last night because this door is actually not sealed at the bottom
See how it's open right there
So let's send a bunch of cold air and the wind was coming from that direction. So it was kind of cold
But tonight's supposed to be 15 degrees colder and same with tomorrow night. So we're gonna get really stocked up on this wood
here's some of the
Cedar I was able to get look at this. This is such beautiful wood. It smells great in here. So
I've got some more cedar out there
But I've got some more cedar out there that there's that big stump that I was working on I brought it over here
So I'm gonna work on that today
The snow is probably gonna melt a little bit because it's supposed to get to 40 today
So I might be a little sloppy
But I create a little area to work on then I'll be good and then I've got some other wood underneath the truck that I can
Use but let's go outside and see how much snow we got
Looks like it was more of an ice storm
That wind was crazy last night. Oh the rocks look cool
Looks so awesome
It's gonna be oh, man. It's gonna be so beautiful around here today
Look at this over here. Let's walk over to this little bluff. We can look out
and the rocks
Yeah, look at this. Holy cow
Look at how cool that is
This area is so awesome
And
We can't we see the warm in there last night, but like I was saying it was just loud
So let's walk up over here. I want to see what we're looking at for incoming weather
It seems like it's coming from kind of the West over there. Oh, yeah
It's plenty ominous
Actually looks like there's a little bit of a break coming
Then more after it
Yeah, this was more of an ice storm yesterday or last night
Tell you what, it is dark over there. I think I know the waves coming
Yeah, no, the waves coming. I think I know the wave is supposed to schedule schedule to hit at 9
And last for an hour or two so it looks like that's what's coming in
so we're gonna head back over here and
Hunker down. I'm gonna break my diet this morning. I'm gonna bake some biscuits and some cookies over the stove because
Is that just I don't know. I'm just I feel like it and it's cold out and
I don't want to
Cook a whole whole breakfast yet. I'm still kind of waking up. So let's get into 10 here. Whoo
Definitely chilly not as much accumulation as I thought though
Look, who's up? What you doing, baby? You want to come outside?
You know, come on out. Come on. Don't come potty. No, okay
Here's that massive red cedar stump that I'm gonna
Process up today. So I'm not really sure I'm gonna do that
That thing's just a big twisted ball of knots, but it's gonna burn up real well
And then the rest of the wood that I have is right underneath here
So I may need to get a little bit more to ride out three days worth of really cold weather, but we'll we'll see
Let's get our coffee going
Get our breakfast and of course number one thing gives Sierra some lovin
Hey when you're working with the stove
you always want to bring your your coals in the back towards the front because those are the ones that haven't burned through them through
That they basically burn the least and so the pull up to the front here
You can kind of get like a second burn out of that that wood that you put in here. Oops
And then what I want to do is throw in a couple of these
Softer
Wood pieces just for daytime burns. I'm gonna I'm gonna save all of like the the hardwoods like this for at night
Make it longer burns out of them
All right, it's straight-up windy out today went out and just got some more wood process got all this stuff taken care of
That's more hardwoods, which is great
It's from that wood that I found yesterday
I didn't realize some of it was already hardwood or that some of it was hardwood some of its softwood, too
but
I've only got enough wood for one more night and
I've got they got that wood still underneath the truck, but it's not enough for
For Saturday, so I'll have to figure out. Well, actually no if I if I get that that
Cedar like huge ball that root ball if I can get that all
Processed up that I think I'll be in good shape
But um, let's take a lot of effort because that thing is huge
What I was thinking about doing was sawing like a like a checker pattern
you know like saw down and saw down saw down saw down and then taking my outdoors max and
Banging it with the hammer part of the back part of it
But the sledgehammer part of it banging that wood and breaking it up and just creating like, you know
Like squares like that of cedar because this the cedar burned great last night. It was actually a time
After I woke up that the first segment of the video or the first part of the video where I was up at three o'clock
in the morning
After I put that big piece of cedar in there and it got really hot and the flame was going up the
The damper the first part of the stovepipe there was was hot the bottom part was red
I could see it glowing so it was so hot
So but it was still kind of chilly in here and I think that was due to the wind
I mean these walls are paper thin in this awning room and I can feel a breeze coming through here right now
I'm coming from this direction going that way
it's not very
not very strong, but it's there and
Tonight with the temperatures getting down to 18 degrees Fahrenheit, you know, it's gonna be chilly in here. So I think it's gonna be another
night of not
Not having very much
Not having very much sleep
just because when it's cold like that you got to stay up all night and just work with the stove and
You don't want your stove to go out, you know when it's that cold because getting it going again
Especially a stove this small, you know getting it going again and then getting this room heated up
It takes a little bit longer than usual
The stove that I have in the big tent
Is so massive that I can as soon as I get some flame going in there
It's like the metal heats up and it's just like a massive heater. It gets going pretty quick
But this one's a little bit smaller
So it just takes a little more time and the airflow isn't as as good through it as the other stove that I have
As far as drawing it to the front. I think the reason why is because this stove isn't airtight
it doesn't have the little barrier around the the
Stove door. So but today we're gonna watch movies here at camp
I've got World War Z that I've I want to download the other day and I'm gonna watch that and then my internet
Something is wrong with my internet as far as the that unlimited mobile data
Mobile hotspot and so I may have to look at another provider
I think the company that I was going with is going under so
May have to go with like unlimited bill or something like that. The only problem is unlimited bill is pretty expensive
It's like 200 bucks a month, but it's worth it. That way I don't have to go into town all the time
And it's nice to have connectivity back here. So
All right. Let's get the lounge day started
All right making progress with this massive cedar root
so
it's uh, I split it right down the middle with the axe and then I'm gonna
I'm gonna do a cut here with the axe and see if I can pop it out and then over on this one
I'm gonna start jamming into this wedge right here and just start seeing if I can break apart any of these knots
And if I can then we're set with firewood because this firewood is super hard this cedar
I mean cedar is hard anyway, but for it to be in knots like that
That'll be I mean a time and a half is hard. So that'll get some real long burns. It should be great
And it smells awesome
Yes
Smells so good
What you smellin babe some other animals in here I'd imagine they would take refuge
You want it? Come here. It's yours. Oh boy. Come here. Right here. What are you doing?
You want to read the book with me you want to read with me like all right
You want to read with me
It's currently about 1 a.m. I
Fell asleep when I laid down with Sierra right after dinner
And after reading that little bit of book and so I want to get the stove going again
And put in a pretty large piece of cedar wood. That's taking up pretty much the entire
Stove box here, so I'm gonna get this going and just let it smolder the rest of the night
Supposed to get down to 22 later on
So I've already got about let's see six hours of sleep this evening
So I wonder if I can go back to bed or not I might make a cup of coffee and just save it in my thermos
until
Until the Sun comes up, but that way I'd have it when I wake up, so we'll see
But it was a really great day with Sierra. We had so much fun running around and just
Playing all over the place and having her chase sticks and do her fun things so
But ready to roll on somewhere else tomorrow, so we'll see where the wind takes us
