Carving a Life Sized German Shepard

Wood carving: Tips and Tools

Hey guys, welcome back for another carving video. So today we are going to be jumping into part two
of a three-part project. Part one being a red-tailed hawk, part two being a life-sized
german shepherd. So that's what we're going to be carving today. I laid the log down here and
just kind of squared it up and then I just kind of spray painted our german shepherd. We're going
to be carving his head separately so that way he can fit on here proportional. So let's get started.
There we go. So we're going to be doing a lot of detail work on this dog so we're going to
speed up the blocking process a little bit that way we can kind of slow down and enjoy the details.
And we are back at it. We had a little bit of a snow dusting last night
so I tarped the dog. So the goal today is to make this thing really look like a dog,
maybe even start getting a little bit into like detailing the head, finding those paws,
defining muscles and stuff like that. And then we'll jump into furring and further detail tomorrow
and then hopefully we'll be at a point where we can kind of start, I don't know, wrapping things up.
So let's get started.
Okay we're gonna give this puppy some eyes.
So I'm here with the german shepherd and we're gonna start coloring this pup. So the dog I'm
mimicking, she has a pretty complex coat with a lot of tones. Not like that classic light shepherd
with that big dark spot on their back. She has a very dark face and then at the same time some
very light features. So we're gonna try our best to mimic that using a combo of burning and sanding
and many colors of stain and we'll just kind of keep picking away until it looks like her. So uh
let's go.
So in an attempt to try to mimic this complex coat pattern to the best of my ability,
I'm really piling on the colors. I have done a bunch of torching, a bunch of sanding,
which is giving me kind of those in-between tones. Now I just mixed up some ebony and mineral spirits
which is essentially like a very very dark brown, like a black brown. So we're gonna go through now
and hit all the very very dark spots so then that will give us our darkest tone. So we'll have
the ebony as the darkest tone and then like this really char stuff will be the second darkest tone
and then you kind of have this area which is that in-between and then you have the light.
So I'm gonna get the airbrush all set up and we'll give this pup some uh darker spots, some
shadowing, and then um kind of move on to the final little details with the hand, hand brush,
you know paint those little toenails and stuff like that. So let me get set up and we'll get started.
Hey guys we're doing the outro inside today because it's doing this outside right now.
I don't think you would be able to hear me over the wind and it's cold out so we're inside,
but uh two things I wanted to mention before showing you the shepherd. One, if you are interested
in seeing the hawk video or you haven't yet, there's a link to that down below in the description.
That's part one of this three-part order. This German Shepherd was part two. Part three is pushed
back for a little while so you're gonna have to wait on that one. So the second thing I wanted
to mention is the fact that I have a Patreon. I've had this Patreon for over a year now and
I only have two members. So Patreon members get access to a private discord where I post content
almost daily just about what I'm doing and what I'm carving since I carve a lot more than what
I post here on YouTube and it would also be a great resource for newer carvers out there. You're
free to ask me all the carving questions you can think of because I know trying to research and
find this information on your own can be almost impossible because there's no information out
there about chainsaw carving. So this could be a really great resource for you guys. But yeah,
it's a great time. So check it out. There's a link below if you're interested. But back to our
shepherd, I cannot wait to show you this one. I'm so happy with how it came out. So let's see it!
