Tropical Punch is a motorcycle adventure series that follows Dave and Nugget as they cross the tropical top end of Australia on Husqvarna 701s. This ride was supported by Husqvarna Motorcycles Australia, Ellwood Motorcycle Adventures, Giant Loop and Adventure Moto. In the first half of the series they hook up with Woody, Ellyse and Squid of Ellwood Motorcycle Adventures on their organised off road tour from Cairns to Darwin. They tag along with twenty other riders of mixed skill levels to tackle some serious adventure. In the second half of the series Dave and Nugget again head off with Woody, Ellyse and Squid into the Western Australian Kimberley. But this time not on a tour. Woody is searching for new trails to expand his business into this stunning landscape.
Motorcycle Adventure Dirt Bike TV supported proudly by Adventure Spec in the UK,
Rally Raid Products, Giant Loop in the United States, Adventure Moto in Australia,
Pirelli Tyres, Motel Oils, RK Chains and Australian Adventure Bike Magazine.
Nugget and I have had two great wins. Firstly we've been invited by Craig Woody Woodward
and the Lease of Elwood Motorcycle Adventures to join them on a 10-day adventure from Cairns
to Darwin, and then go exploring with them in the Western Australian Kimberleys,
where they hope to expand their motorcycle adventure tours.
And to make it even better, Husqvarna Australia have given Nugget and I two brand new Husky 701s
to ride on this 7000km adventure across Australia's tropical top end.
Nugget and I were over the moon when Husky offered us the bikes.
I'd recently ridden the Husqvarna Long Range and had been very impressed.
The Huskies are light and powerful with excellent suspension and handling.
Out of the box they are a premium adventure mount and require little modification,
just an off-road bash plate, metal hand guards and rally pegs.
The adventure starts at Elwood Motorcycle Adventure HQ in Cairns. About half of the
riders have brought their own bikes and the other half are renting Suzuki DR400s from Woody and
Elise. For this trip Nugget was riding a 2020 model Long Range. The Long Range tank for my
standard 2021 Husky hadn't arrived before we left for the trip, so I'll be relying on fuel bladders.
You're going to get really used to that noise. This is choker chicken,
when you hear choker chicken it's time to get up.
So we're going to use that for any time we need to get your attention because we've got such a big
group, whenever we need to speak to you guys, drop what you're doing, whenever you hear the
choking chicken and just come over and we've got something to tell you or we've got something to
we want to do the briefing or whatever. So first up, welcome to Cairns to Darwin,
Top End Adventure. It's going to be an awesome 10 days. I think we've got lucky with the weather
now. As Woody just mentioned before, we have had the biggest wet season in 22 years, doubling the
average April rainfall. We've had close to a metre in the last two weeks, so it's been pretty full on
but we're on the tail end of it and we're heading the right way. All that's gone up to Cape York.
We're heading west, so we should be riding well and truly out of it pretty quickly.
Here we go. I can hear this thing purring like a kitten, the old DR. Who we got here?
Scott. G'day mate, I'm Nugget. How are you Nugget? Good mate, good. I love the bike. I'm a lover of DRs.
Yeah, good bike, good bike. Yeah, she's good alright. Listen to her purr. I guarantee it's
there at the end too, not like some of these fancy ones. I'm sure you will, I'm sure you will.
And what have we got over here? Chris. Chris, one of the fancy ones. How's it going Chris?
Mate, 690. She's all set up too. First trip. First trip on it, is it? First trip on it, yeah.
Yeah, good. From the 1090 it is. And did you ride it up here? No mate, sent it on the truck.
Sent it on the truck? Oh, you got the tower as well. Yeah, yeah. What happens when you go over
the handlebars though? I don't know. Yeah, it happens to me a bit. That's my problem.
Yeah, I've been over the bars a few. I hope not to do it. Mate, she's well set up there.
And the steg pegs. A bit of desert racing. A bit of desert racing with the steg pegs.
Yeah, lean back on them. Toby Price has them, see. If Toby can have them, I'll have them.
Yeah, so do I. The closest I can go though is growling my hair at the back.
Never said this on a motorcycle adventure ride before, but this is romantic, isn't it? Woody
puts flowers on my bike every single morning. So those women adventurers out there, that's the
standard Woody is set. Yep. Andy. Big shoes to fill. Yeah, big shoes. You got to do that mate.
He's actually a really big sweetheart. There you go. Dave does the same to me.
Who does? Oh, sometimes you prefer me. Nugget, we're rolling. We're on. We're on.
Who's there? I'll see you in 7,000 kilometers. 7,000. And Nugget, I feel like I'm a bikey again.
Look at this. God, some of these are packing pretty high in their bikes, mate.
Bit of weight up top there. Look at those mountains. We're going to hang right up into
there, into the Atherton Tablelands. And I think we've dodged the rain. There's a whole lot of rain
coming today, later. Hopefully we can get over the ranges and back onto the western slopes
before that rain hits.
The first day is a relatively short distance from Cairns to Chiligo, but it gives time for everyone
to get used to riding their bikes loaded with all the gear they need for the 10-day trip.
Even shallow creek crossings become a little more difficult with that extra weight.
I found a blitz. The handle's like,
Oh my god.
Chiligo is a real surprise for us, with stunning rock formations and caves.
The next time I'm up this way, I plan to spend a couple of days exploring.
And the huskies have had a cruisy day, but we're hearing tomorrow is a
550km stretch without fuel, with some muddy conditions.
Well, we're heading into Chiligo. These rock formations are amazing as you come in.
You know, the rain they've had out here, some of the tracks are still impassable.
And we're staying at the Chiligo Tourist Village. Here's the boys and girls.
This nugget of oink looks a bit dusty. A bit dusted up.
It's got a few, looks like, marks from hits too. It's had a few.
He's had a few, he's had a few offs these days. He's not the rider he used to be, that's for sure.
Oh, look at that. He's got his giant loop peeled back. Gonna fill it, fill it full of gas.
Fill up both tanks. 560km they said. I just pulled, I just pulled 280 out of the front one.
Yeah. And then now I've got to go to the back.
And I'm over there.
I had to switch at mid-ride. It's like I'm up a hill.
But I flicked it over and away it went, just a flick of the switch.
You might have to pop that off, I think. You won't get that off out of there.
I don't think you're going to have to undo that.
But yeah, I'm starting to get a bit concerned. I've got to pop out a fuel bladder.
I've got a bit of fuel anxiety. 560km tomorrow.
I've only got the standard tank, you've got the long range.
I've got to crack out, I've got to crack out a bladder.
How big bladder? That's extra weight.
I know, it's got 8 litres.
I could sell you some of mine, maybe.
Here it is.
It's brand new.
7.6 litres, that's not...
Is that how much it holds?
That's not quite enough, is it?
Yeah, you'll be alright.
You'll be alright?
Yeah.
With Exxon Valdez.
Mate, I'm one of those, the glass is half full, not half empty guys.
Just go for it.
Just going to go for it, you reckon?
Yeah.
There goes the old glove. The glove always falls on the ground.
When you're pushing them towards getting petrol.
Get out of there.
That'll be a bourbon.
Let's get my tank bag out.
What the nugget?
Who put a cane toad in my tank bag?
Get out, get out of here.
Jesus Christ.
What have you done to me?
There's a cane toad in my tank bag.
You're a disgrace.
You're a f***ing disgrace.
He just wants a free ride.
You've created a lot of mayhem tonight.
I can't sleep.
I know that.
You've woken up.
Everyone's up.
You've woken up Mr. Squid with Choke the Chicken.
The mattress is all flat.
Yeah, well.
Nugget, has he got a chicken license?
I reckon he's up for it.
The first thing he noticed though was Choke's mouth.
Have a look at it.
He's ready to scream.
Gone, gone.
I'll go get the boys rolled up.
Yeah, yeah, go and get them.
See if we can get them up out of bed.
All right.
There we go.
Look, he's got it somewhere he shouldn't.
Yeah, we're a chilly goat.
The sweep's flat out preparing.
Mr. Squid.
We've got a fuel bladder.
Lead rider.
That's not a fuel bladder.
That's a 44 gallon drum.
I'll tell you what,
you'd be begging on your knees for that if you run out of petrol 20 k's out.
So today we're heading to Karumba.
So we'll be on the western side of Cape York today.
We've got 570 kilometers of...
We don't know what the track's going to be like.
We've heard word that there has been some four wheel drives through there.
We're not sure yet.
So it's going to be an interesting day.
The rivers have apparently gone down.
Most of them.
So they're crossable again.
So it's going to be an interesting day for everyone.
Because it's been a big wet this year up there, hasn't it?
Huge wet.
Yeah, huge wet.
So there has been some cars stranded out there last week,
which I've just been told.
So yeah, there's definitely been some rain around,
but it's all gone down from what I've heard.
So after all, it is an adventure.
Well, that's it.
All right, later.
Get us there.
You didn't come here to ride down the bitumen, did you?
No, I didn't.
Andy, I'm looking at these sailor knots, these truckie hitches.
That's a clove hitch.
If it comes undone.
Come on, come on.
Let's just focus on this.
If it comes undone.
Yes.
I'll shout Andy a beer.
Okay.
Jug.
Jug, all right.
We'll ride for 60 kilometers.
We're still on the same property.
That's how big they are, right?
They're massive, right?
So when we're riding in, a lot of them,
when you get close to home,
so that's where they put their weaners.
Some of these properties got 60,000 cattle, right?
They're not mucking around.
Their house paddock's got 16,000 in it, right?
When we ride in, they're letting us go through.
Just, you see any cattle, mate, just don't make them bommie.
Or don't go, oh, if you see them with button off, idle through.
Show a bit of respect.
They are their roads too.
They use the station roads.
Don't go ripping them all up.
And we're in fuel conservation mode today, you know?
We don't need to be revving the crap out of it all day today.
We've got, just that by the off chance,
one of these rivers may have come up,
we may end up having to backtrack.
Who knows?
Things change a lot out there.
We could have rain 200 kilometres away,
and it comes down the river,
and the rivers pop up out of nowhere.
Beautiful day today,
but it might not be further down the track.
So just be on fuel conservation mode all day today,
just because we've got a long way to turn back if we have to.
We don't need to be running out of fuel out there.
We're heading to Karumba.
The difference between Nugget and I is,
Nugget's got bloody 600 kilometres range,
and even with an eight litre bladder,
and 13 and a half litres,
I don't think I either just make it or just don't make it.
So, fellas, get off the road.
Come on, come on.
Come on, boys, boys and girls, get off the road.
Come on.
Nugget has been to Chilligo before,
and as we head out of town,
he takes Squid and I to caves jam-packed
with stunning Indigenous rock art
he'd been told about by Aboriginal elders.
But Nugget has one more gem up his sleeve,
to trick Squid into believing his 701 has died.
Oh, wow.
A little bit earlier than that.
About 5,000 years ago.
Wow.
Pretty special place.
Can you imagine what went on here?
It's got a lovely sound to it, hasn't it?
Mate, can you imagine what went on here?
There's probably, you know,
women probably gave birth here,
there were shelters here,
they would have fed here, you know?
And why wouldn't they?
Look, it's God's country.
So leave it as it is.
You never touch them.
Don't even put your hands on it.
They don't even touch them enough
and they don't let people come up and touch them.
It's been there, you know, 50,000 years,
some of those canes, I reckon.
I don't know how old these ones are, but...
Yeah, what's coming out of your bike?
Trail back to your bike, look.
Oh, shit.
What's that?
I don't know, mate.
I just started costering and spodering, actually.
That's why I pulled up.
Well, we've got a problem there, mate.
You've got something's going on.
That's fuel.
No.
You reckon?
Fuel?
Is that fuel?
Have a taste.
It doesn't taste like...
Oh, you...
That's free.
That's free, you know.
Very interesting.
This is pretty fast-flowing water.
From the air, it's hard to get an appreciation
of the challenges of fast-flowing water.
Up close and personal, it becomes clearer.
In these conditions, it would be very easy
for a bike to topple over
and then be taken off the courseway into deep water.
The skill and experience level of the riders is very broad
and the best alternative is for all bikes to be warped.
This bit's deep.
Yeah, it's good.
Just this first bit.
You good?
Yeah, I feel good.
Whilst Nugget helps out, Woody and Squid decide
that Nugget is riding a little too quick
on his Flash 701 and decide to slow him down a bit.
Nugget's riding a little too well,
so we need to put a little bit of extra weight here.
A bit of rock.
I'll hide that so he can't see it.
Yeah, just hide it in the...
Yeah, he won't even know that.
Probably 40 psi in the front tyre will cool him down a bit too.
Look at that.
He'll love that.
Oh, yeah.
He's going to really enjoy that.
It's going to be nice.
Nice and soggy.
Beautiful.
You reckon that'd be right for him?
Yeah.
Nugget, you know what?
You wake up to sweep at four in the morning.
It's what happens.
Pack your bag, boys and girls, correctly,
or you lose all your gear.
It's gone left, it's gone right.
Nugget's going.
Bastard!
Look what he did to me.
You said you'd get me back.
That's in the video, buddy.
You're in now.
The conditions were getting trickier
and riders were coming off pretty regularly.
And one of the riders has come off.
He's injured his shoulder.
So, Darren, you just slipped over and went shoulder first.
Yeah, I should have my armour on.
Yeah.
So, good tip for anyone coming up.
Yeah, I don't.
I'm bad.
But high-sided here.
Yeah.
And landed straight on my shoulder.
She's a little bit painful, so I don't know how far we're going to get.
Yeah, well, good luck.
Disappointing.
Yeah, if I don't get through.
Yeah, I'm in a little bit of pain.
We didn't know it at the time,
but Darren had broken his upper arm.
There was still 160 kilometres to go
and the conditions were only getting worse.
Darren was in a heap of pain
and could barely grasp the throttle.
His mates and Squid made it easy as possible for him,
taking his gear and picking lines
and when it got too difficult, riding the bike for him.
But at the end of the day,
he was going to have to do most of the riding himself.
No worries.
Good luck, mate.
Good luck.
Yeah, try to get that hand over the top
so you can just rest it into the throttle.
No, mate, I'm not convinced.
Might be safer.
You want to come out where there's wheel marks out of the middle.
Hang on, that way?
That way, then left.
Right.
Nugget, you're just pretending to help.
We've got an injured sole.
Got to get this out of the road.
It's injured over there.
Yeah, so we've got a traffic jam.
We've got Darren with a really sore arm.
These guys in their four-wheel drive,
they're unstuck.
They've got kids in their car
and this is extremely isolated out here.
So I'll just see what Nugget's got planned.
Well, it's all happening.
The family in the white four-wheel drive have broken down
and Nugget has turned back to help them,
had a quick conversation with them
and is now heading back down to the river crossing.
I'm not sure of his plan
but I'm not going to let him go by himself
in this isolated area.
The car, the patrol with the little baby
they've broken the fan belt
so the car keeps overheating
but they're about five kilometres back.
They're just overheating
so they've got the bonnet up, cooling it down
and then they'll come a bit further.
So you gave them a message?
Yeah, yeah, I'll talk to them.
I said if they break down, I'll come back
and I saw them break down
so I'd come back to tell you.
Oh, thank you, my old friend.
Otherwise, I said you're leaving at four.
Yeah, yeah.
I told them that.
But I said, nah, I'd rather recommend
waiting another half an hour after five o'clock.
They'll be here soon.
Yeah, okay, man.
Thanks for that, mate.
No, no worries, mate.
All good, mate.
Thank you, my friends.
All right, that's okay.
Don't worry.
Thanks for coming back, though.
No, no, we'll come back.
Hopefully you do the same for me.
See you, mate.
Bye-bye.
That makes up for the cane toad in my bag today.
That was Naughty Nugget.
This is Super Nugget.
Oh, someone's down.
Yeah, that's the same place the other day.
Good.
If you can just lift it a tiny bit,
I can get my leg out.
That's all I need.
One, two, three.
Oh, God, my foot's stuck.
Do you want me to ride it up for you?
I can do it, it's fine.
Okay.
Thank you.
I can't even get my feet out of that.
Wow.
I thought it was better out here, it's not.
I came the same way.
You haven't done anything I wouldn't have done.
Oh, look at that sunset.
Hey, look at that.
I was just commenting on how good you guys have gone today.
You know, you've been just consistent.
There you go, mate.
You deserve a bravery medal.
Mate, I won't lie, I'm doing it f***ing hard.
No, I know.
I know you're doing it hard.
You've got 100 k's to go.
Mate, but I tell you what, you would have been out there for a lot longer.
Oh, God, you're in an awkward spot.
I'm going to give it to it.
Okay, we've got 116 k's to go out of the total of 560 today.
A lot going on, people are tired.
He's good, just getting fuel.
Just fuel.
What an adventure.
You'll talk about this for years.
Yep.
Go this way, see if I can beat him.
Oh, no.
Oh, Jesus.
It's raining bloody mud on me.
Oh, come on.
Nugget's line was better.
Much better.
We've got to keep them going.
I don't know how Darren's going to get through that.
Like, that is just...
That's hard riding.
Like, I don't even think some of the other guys...
No, round to the right.
Famous last words.
You've got to put your money where your mouth is.
Yeah, I'd put in a quick shift then.
Oh, no.
Nugget!
Oh, no, I'm getting sucked.
No, come on.
How do you get...
This is the beauty of...
I'll just pull it.
Yeah, I've got to get the other end out.
The big bikes are coming through.
One, two, three.
Yeah, it's solid ground.
Rided last time and ended up up to my axles in mud, so...
Nugget must be a genius, that's all I can say.
Oh, gee.
If you go into that, you're in serious shit.
Come on, Nugget.
Don't do that to me.
Keep it going.
Feed it.
Go through the bushes.
Decent adventure.
There'll be some tired people tonight.
So we're getting towards the end of the day.
We're still 130 kilometers out and there's this stretch of deep sand.
Everyone's tired and it's creating mayhem.
Now another one's gone down.
There's two gone down in the same spot.
There's no way in God's earth that we are getting in, in the afternoon, in the twilight.
You seem to have parked your bike in a very odd position.
I just wanted to have a sleep.
All right.
We just sort of gently rested ourselves in the sand.
All right, so how many does it take to lift this up?
I think three is a good number.
Three is a good number?
Yeah, one more.
All right.
Oh, he hasn't got my bike.
Adversity is never far away from the most memorable days of motorcycle adventure.
And for many on this tour, this day certainly had some challenges
that took them way out of their comfort zones.
But that's the great thing about an organized tour.
Experienced operators will ensure everyone gets in by the end of the day,
even if it's a little late.
Can I have two Chico Babies before we start this, please?
Once the job is complete, you can have one Chico Baby.
One Chico Baby.
That's one Chico Baby.
Five calories.
OK, so we've just got to tell everyone what's going on here.
I've run out of petrol.
We're 30 kilometers away.
My friend here, Nick, is going to help us because I've got a fuel bladder.
And we're going to tap into his Exxon Valdez here.
Here we go.
We're 20 kilometers out of Normandson and he wanted me to tow him.
Yeah, and the bloody wolf wouldn't tow me.
Oh, well, crash.
You've got more chance of getting kicked to death by a duck than me towing you 20 kilometers.
So we've got no bottles.
So we've got to use the fuel bladder to get these.
The giant loop is empty.
Two US gallons, 7.5 liters.
We're using it.
Let's go.
I'm only getting one liter.
How many kilometers?
Not with the long range Husky.
It could have probably head to Victoria from Cape York.
Long range Husky is seeming appealing at the moment, I can tell you.
Dave, because I've got the camera out, there's all these moths around.
Have they come out of your wallet?
Now I'm going to turn the tap on and it should work.
Okay.
So I want 10 liters.
No, just watch that now because I've got to get home.
Oh, he doesn't care about you.
A flying squirrel will.
I was going to say a flying squirrel because it's PG rated.
We can't say that other word.
You know what?
There's a few bikes behind us.
I'm actually a bit worried for them.
No, I'm not.
Mate, I've been right to the pack.
I've been right at the bottom.
I've been saving people in mud holes.
Nick's been saving people in mud holes.
Yeah.
Dave, I was saving you in the mud hole.
You fell over.
You did not save me.
You fell over.
He had it.
He looked on and just had it.
I don't know.
Round to the right.
Oh no.
Nugget!
You just keep talking, Nick.
I just want to distract you as long as I can to empty this Exxon Valdez out.
You've got to go about another 25 kilometers.
So you're going to need about a liter.
I want to mock this.
I don't trust you guys.
See that?
Oh, yeah.
Don't you?
You can trust me.
I've got to turn the tap off.
What a mark there for you.
There's a mark.
I don't trust you.
I wouldn't either.
I don't trust.
Bloody South Africans.
I never trust anyone.
We're not even South Africans, are we?
He's not South African.
No.
Dave's never left.
Zimbabwean.
Zimbabwe.
Oh, I nearly said the rude word.
Is that Mugabe's?
Yeah.
But I think that should be enough.
Yeah, I reckon so because we're getting close here.
Yeah, that'll be enough.
I want to see him run out again.
Am I the only one with torches around here?
Dave, you've got to come more prepared.
Nuggets.
Listen, guys.
That's two fingers.
Yeah, that seems right.
That'll get him.
Two fingers?
That's because I called you South African.
You could have given me three fingers.
Sorry.
I've already had Chokey Chicken out.
But obviously not loud enough.
So I'm going to go and start kicking some tents and make sure we all get out of here on time.
Or it'll be another late night.
That was good riding yesterday.
They were made for that.
The huskies.
Heaps of power pushing through the mud.
Deep mud.
A lot of them last night said they were down to the axles.
The huskies were just skidding across the top.
It was unreal.
It was, wasn't it, mate?
They were the weapon of choice.
Nice and light.
Yeah, just heaps of power.
Nice and light.
They were just flying across.
Mind you, I got a bit envious about your long range.
Mate, I had to stop twice to get some juice.
I was begging for it.
Yeah, I wasn't telling you either.
No, I know.
Rosie, Rosie, you'd have a nightmare if she saw me telling you with that bike.
So, Rosie, I wasn't telling you.
Yours looks cleaner.
Why is that?
Maybe I didn't stack.
Stop lying.
It's just lying.
Well, that concludes the first episode of Tropical Punch.
A 7000 kilometre motorcycle adventure across Australia's tropical north.
In the next episode, we continue to head west in search of Darwin.
Now, for those in the mood, there is a bucket full of outtakes.
There's no reminiscence about the good times.
Nugget's checklist is working out.
Oink's on.
He's got his.
That's my skin dog.
He's got my skin dog on his.
It's not Lily.
It's another dog.
And here, see, Katie Manning racing.
Climb jacket.
Come across here.
Nugget, that, you know, when we went to the lady at the checkout,
she said she thought this was a family heirloom.
Hey, this is my pro rider suitcase.
This is pro rider suitcase.
Older than my helmet.
How much did this cost?
Five dollars.
The local recycling centre.
Nugget's Environmentally Friendly Recycling.
I bought it for five bucks.
Mate.
It's a pearler.
It's coming back in.
Just shut it down.
Just shut the, look at that.
You know, Glen Campbell was singing Rhinestone Cowboy when that bloody.
It's a pearler.
When that came out.
You're kidding me.
More of a concern is.
Yeah.
I bought two separate gloves.
Lucky they're separate fingers.
Got a few holes in them.
Yeah, we did get some gloves off someone.
You remember those other ones?
They're brand new.
I don't want to use them.
I was going to save them for a rainy day.
Well, it's raining, mate.
It's raining.
I just got to keep off the.
Get off the throttle.
Yeah, you know, they're good.
All right.
The odd couple.
Yeah.
Yeah, so here's my 701 setup.
Got the tank bag with the cameras in it.
Tools and hard food, you know, in cans on that side.
Camping gear on top.
And then clothes and cooking gear here.
And everything that's heavy is to the front and forward.
With a little bit of packing just to make sure it's soft.
If my leg gets hit backwards and hits it.
So I'm pretty happy with that.
And Nugget's still going at the moment.
Found it. That's good.
It's good to see.
Thanks to Steve from Adventure Moto.
You got your gloves.
That's good.
Those other ones were looking grim.
Yeah, I know.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
What's this?
What's this you got here?
This is my right now, Phil.
I've got the old trusty.
I've got the old, older trusty.
All.
I don't know what you're going to do.
There's a dilemma there.
Your image could be shattered.
It's like, um, it's a 50% chance.
What do you think?
I think they need to get to know you in the work, man.
This will be better in the high country as we're going over the hill.
Yeah, I think that's reflective.
Yeah.
The red dust stains it.
Yeah.
I'm not much good on the washing machine.
Even mum can't get the orange out.
And if your mum, if your mum can't get the orange out of the shirts,
things, you're in trouble.
This one is.
Yeah, that's, that's orange from the Cape, isn't it?
I haven't got the orange out of mine.
No, no, it's impossible.
Even Omo Cold Wash couldn't get it.
There's a challenge, Dave.
I'll give you it.
Sonia, take home.
See how it goes.
Look at this blacks in front of his DR.
Look at that.
He's trying to make it like one of those new Harleys.
This bike's right up my alley.
Look at, is that a beer esky?
Is that a beer esky in it?
I thought it might flip up for a beer.
Mate, that is a serious bit of kit.
What?
He's got a hunting knife in there.
Jesus Christ, he's got a hunting knife.
Strapped to the bike.
I'll be calling him sir too.
I'll have two people have to call sir now.
We thought it was an esky.
Or he was trying to make it into one of those new Harleys.
It's got a hunting knife.
Is that for pigs?
Wow.
Crocodiles?
You never know.
You never know out there.
You never know.
Might be for us.
Oh, nugget.
That's that movie Deliverance?
Yeah.
There's 22 went into the forest and only one came out.
Mate, we're very impressed with your front end there.
This was a rework the other night, wasn't it?
See the new brackets on it?
Wow.
I used polycarbonate thinking it wouldn't break.
You know how polycarbonate's really...
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
...durable shit.
Well, I was wrong.
It broke.
I would have liked to have seen the whole front end of the bike come off.
Did it go in one go or?
Oh no, no.
The right side broke and I just made a patch out of a piece of checker plate alloy.
And then the left one went the day after.
So somebody had a scrap of stainless.
So that became the left one.
That was back in Inaminca.
And then the right side we did here.
Nugget's loving this.
He's loving this talk.
I'm a good engineer, I tell you.
Well, I wouldn't use the word good, you know.
Mate, that's good engineering.
I made a bit of a boo-boo.
All right?
I made a boo-boo on this one.
But no, it actually works.
It does stop me from getting blown off the back of the bike.
Nothing can be fixed.
Yeah.
It's a hunting knife.
What's this here?
Is that a hunting knife?
That's a torch.
What do you think?
Oh, it's a torch.
It wasn't a hunting knife.
It's a torch.
Yeah.
Hey, Woody, it was a torch.
It's a charge cable.
Yeah, yeah.
The 12-volt outlet is on this side.
The USB is inside, out of the way.
Nugget.
I knew the outback was dangerous.
Nugget.
Torture.
He thought it was a knife.
I thought it was a knife.
God, that was funny.
That's hilarious.
Yeah.
No, that's so I can see what I'm cooking.
That's magnetic, and it goes underneath my ******* pannier rack on this side.
We thought it was how you were going to get your cooking.
Well, well, I mean, you could use it for that, but you could try.
You need to cook like that.
So, mate, where are you from?
Geelong.
Wow, a long way.
Yeah, Geelong, yeah.
What made you come on the trip?
We went in one a while ago up over in Vietnam, and it didn't end well.
We had to come back sort of sooner than we expected.
So we thought, we'll give one a go in Australia.
We actually saw them on YouTube advertising it, and we just went, yeah, let's just do that.
Oh, that's great, mate.
Yeah.
Oh, that's good.
Looking forward to it.
Should be great.
Yeah, yeah.
They've just had to put us on a bit of tar because the rain up here's been horrific.
Yeah, they were saying that, yeah.
Well, that's good.
Look forward to riding with you.
Yeah, should be great.
Here, Alice.
Little Jesse out of-
Jesse?
Yeah.
Yep, so-
Toy Story.
So Pete found Jesse and Woody sitting out on the Starkey track-
Yep.
Together, and yeah, brought him in for us.
And now I have Jesse on mine, and Woody has Woody on his.
Oh, how cute.
Oink thought, Oink over here thought he might have had a girlfriend.
Oh, Oinka.
Oink's over there.
Yeah, he thought he might have had a girlfriend with Jesse here, but Woody's over there.
Woody's here.
Chippendale's got you, mate.
Yeah, it's only just.
Okay.
He's blue eyes.
It's full of rocks, this thing.
It's going to put some people off.
It's going to shut their momentum down.
It's got a punch ahead.
End of day one, mate.
Do you know where we are?
Chilligo.
You had to look up and I saw you did it.
How'd you like today?
Today was good.
Yeah.
So Rob, where are you from?
Riddles Creek.
Where's that?
North of Melbourne.
Basset and Ranges.
Ah, you'd have good riding.
Victorian high country.
Yeah, a lot of good riding around there.
Yeah, mate.
Yes.
Do a little bit of riding in Cobourg, Wombat State Forest.
Yes.
A lot of good riding around there.
Yeah, yeah.
Love that.
Yeah, mate.
Well, it's a good band.
Are you here with anyone?
Yeah, with Darren over here.
Hey, Darren.
Hey, Chris.
Okay.
Welcome, Chris.
Good to see you.
We were a crew of what originally?
Five.
A crew of five and you're down to three.
Had a cup to pull out.
Only the A grade has survived.
They got a bit soft when it came to getting close.
Yeah, only 100,000 people will hear that, that they got a bit soft.
Do you want to name them?
No, no.
I'd better not name them.
You'd better not name them?
Come on.
Maybe after I've had a few drinks.
Oh, well, don't worry.
I have the camera when we've had a few drinks.
I'll get the name out of you.
He ain't going to appreciate that.
I want their surnames and addresses.
Chilligo.
Big ride today, Nugget.
550 Ks.
Easy.
Mr. Squid reckons we're going to be crying in our hands.
I'm going to be a few tears today, but I won't be all beer and skittles, mate.
I can assure you of that.
You haven't seen the Nugget.
Grandmen cry.
Oh, yeah, mate.
He hasn't seen.
It's been a day and they're like, oh, I've had enough of this.
I'm in my best when I see people at their worst.
Yeah, me too.
I love it.
Nugget and the denarcinator will make it through.
Don't tell me your nickname's Nugget.
My nickname is Nugget.
Oh, my God.
Nugget.
Nuggetron.
So every time I hear Nugget, I look.
Do you reckon we look the same or?
You just get beside each other.
Do you think we look the same?
No.
Sorry, Nugget.
I know.
I think my hair's done better.
It'll be a day that makes or breaks them, I reckon.
A few crying soldiers today, mate.
Don't worry about that.
A few tears today, I reckon.
It'll be like, there'll be no going to the pub tonight, mate.
We'll just roll in.
I barely even get this wag, son.
We'll see who's made of what sort of moral fibre today, bub.
The packing.
The packing, you were saying.
If they haven't packed them right.
Yeah, I reckon we'll lose a bit of kit today.
A lot of their packing's pretty rough.
But this is where they learn, you know.
And I did it yesterday.
I showed them once.
So today, they need to lose a bit.
And then they learn.
They go, oh, my strap's broken.
Yeah, well.
We knew that was going to happen.
Yeah, well, we can't babysit them all day.
Nah, today I'll sort them out.
Today, I've realised that the smiles have come off a bit.
I've realised they're a venture on today.
Mate, how's this raid garage 690 going?
Oh, good, mate.
First ride.
Yeah, big set up for the ride.
But yeah, I'm loving it.
Hang together all day.
So it took a bit of getting used to.
Yeah, it'll take a bit of getting used to.
It looks great.
Got rid of, when the fuel went down a bit today.
It handled better after lunch, so.
Yeah.
How much fuel capacity is this at?
13 and 6.
All right, OK.
Get rid of that 6 off the front and.
Yeah, yeah, it seemed to go better after lunch.
Maybe that was just me, I don't know.
Oh, you got to settle in.
Well, at least he's filling my rear end.
Filling your rear end?
He's doing it pretty.
You're not doing a very good job, but he's.
There we go.
Well, I've got to fill my rear end.
Maybe the hose isn't long enough for his rear end.
There's something wrong about that.
I've just got it in.
It's got the tip in.
That's disgusting.
It's not, you know, it's just depending on how you look at it.
Yeah.
It's not untrue.
Who said my off can't do two things at once?
You'll have to tell me when to stop, Dave.
Oh, shit.
That scared the crap out of me.
I think that's.
Broken a subframe bolt, probably.
If we're lucky, it's the frame.
Pull off, find out what you actually got going on here first.
And then we'll use these straps.
My straps will strap all this down anyway.
And we'll use them to try and fix your bike.
And then is it insured?
Well, reinsurance come insure it for fire and theft.
And it's just going to be a plume of smoke.
No, I just caught on fire, I don't know what happened.
This is actually on film.
Hey, but the giant leap on his front mudguards going well.
No, it hasn't moved.
No.
So these will be right, I reckon.
So let's give it a feel.
I think it's just a lot of weight on there.
Yeah, I agree.
It's not broken.
It's not broken?
No, but it's not broken, mate.
I can just move.
That's not broken.
You don't reckon?
No.
What have you got in here, mate?
Just a lot of weight.
Do you want to put anything on mine, Squid?
I'm putting it all back on him, but nothing's broken.
No, that's just this.
What if I put the swag on here, put my rig gear bag on the front.
And what do I get?
And that chair.
Well, check and come.
You just, if you can.
It's no breaking subframe.
Try to get it forward a bit.
I know it's a pain in the arse.
Yeah, yeah, it can go forward.
Like, I was tying it off these loops here, but I can probably bring it up.
No, you need to bring it forward.
Then there.
And the chair.
The chair can go on the bush.
All right, well, I might go forward then.
All right.
I don't know.
You don't need anything?
I thought that was bent, hey?
No, I did too.
I think we're good.
OK.
I think you got mine.
Yep, cool.
All right.
There's a bit of rope here.
That's that special truck.
All right, Bruno, you want your Telstra cord back?
All righty.
So we diagnosed that.
We thought it was a broken subframe.
It wasn't.
It just needed different packing.
Oh, it's broken.
You reckon it's broken?
No, it's not.
We'll have to put bets on it.
It's not, but there's not the shape.
It's a plastic subframe.
I think there's a shout there.
I'd be with you, Andy, I think.
I'm backing that it's not.
It's not plastic fatigue.
You know what I mean?
It's not steel.
It's plastic.
Hot.
No, the subframe is there.
Yeah, but up the back there, it's just plastic.
From here on in.
We're going to make some money, Elise.
You want to bet on this too?
I do.
Yeah.
See how Zed's subframe isn't broken?
That's stronger.
You're putting weight off the KTM onto the DRZ.
Now that is a wedge-tailed eagle.
The sad thing about this is the wedge-tailed eagle comes down
to eat the carrion, the dead animal.
And then we go blasting past.
It takes him a good deal of effort to get off the ground.
And they're frequently hit by cars or bikes.
Yeah, anyway, I'll get going in a minute with my other camera on.
And we'll see him take off.
One, two, three.
Stop, you'll break his hand.
Is it out?
