Since the first drone air war
less than two years ago
the battle between drones
has developed into a new battlefield
on the battlefield of Ukraine
Ukraine's first man-made
visual drone, FPV
has begun to attack Russian reconnaissance drones
The Ukrainian government is pushing
a so-called Brave One project
which aims to accelerate the implementation
of new technological achievements
and turn good ideas into real combat capabilities
and make them a profound impact
One of them is the battle between drones
During the First World War
the first man-made air war in human history
was when pilots shot each other with handguns
Soon after, everyone fixed the machine gun
on the aircraft's head
forming the most primitive form of air combat
Today
the first battle between drones
seems to be even more intense
than the first man-made air war
But the evolution of man-made air warfare
is much faster than that of manned aircraft
Today, in Ukraine
the battle between drones
may soon turn into a new battle mode
On Oct. 13, 2022
Ukrainian broadcaster and TV host
Zeich Puli Tulai
shared a video
showing a Ukrainian drone
hitting a Russian drone
and causing the latter to be killed
This is the first man-made air war
Russia and Ukraine have also widely used
reconnaissance drones to conduct intelligence
surveillance and reconnaissance
to induce artillery fire
and even directly attack
the enemy's equipment and terrain
This makes the interference
or attack of enemy drones
extremely important
and also very tricky
The reason is that these drones
are usually much lower cost than anti-aircraft missiles
and have a large number
Recently, small-scale drones
attacked enemy reconnaissance drones
and even cases of someone driving a plane
began to increase rapidly
and may even form a new battle mode
Small-scale drone costs
Using them to replace anti-aircraft missiles
that cost tens of thousands or even millions
is clearly a cost-cutting deal
In April this year
Ukraine called for the development of a drone interceptor
Their requirements are very simple
The system can receive radar and other
external sensors to provide relevant target locations
speed and direction information
and can use drones to detect
track and automatically attack targets
Their target
including drones flying at an altitude of 5,000 feet
and at a speed of 60 to 100 miles per hour
especially the reconnaissance drones
of the Russian Orlan-10, Zela and SuperCam
Although the current anti-aircraft system
can easily hit these reconnaissance drones
the cost of the Orlan-10
is only about $100,000
and the cost of each land-based air-to-air missile
launch is about $500,000
It is clear that Ukraine does not want to consume
and wants to use their air-to-air missiles
such as large fixed-wing drones
and even drones that can be piloted
to deal with even more urgent threats
This is why they launched the Courage-1 program
Their signature slogan
is to find a solution
to destroy the enemy's drones
without wasting limited air defense resources
After the first battle between drones
similar drone battles began to increase rapidly
Some seem to be coincidental encounters
while others may be planned actions
under the help of overall battlefield command
Since May this year
a series of videos circulated on social media
reflect the Ukrainian border troops
using FPV to intercept Russian reconnaissance drones
showing the Ukrainian FPV tracking, pursuit
and the process of destroying Russian reconnaissance drones
including Zela and Orlan-10
and other mid-range reconnaissance drones
Orlan-10 is a standard artillery reconnaissance drone
used to locate targets
or launch direct attacks on targets
Zela is a reconnaissance drone
that is used in combination with the Lyubov-1
Without these reconnaissance drones
Russian artillery and Lyubov-1 operators
would not be able to aim and hit the target
The defeat of reconnaissance drones
is a serious blow to the Russian troops
that strongly rely on artillery firepower
The videos from FPV
can only be seen from the operator's perspective
It is impossible to judge what kind of weapons
these drones carry
But judging from the attack scene at the last moment
it should be used to hit, intercept
or destroy the opponent's drones
More videos have shown
that some actions are not isolated events
It may reflect a trend in the development of the Ukrainian battlefield
This may shock and frighten the Russians
Russian troops are also starting to use FPV
to fight against the Ukrainian Babar-Agayeh bomber
The latter is larger
and has lower flight speed and altitude
It is not so easy to intercept reconnaissance drones
These drones fly higher and faster
and require more intelligence support, coordination and organizational planning
in order to successfully intercept
The use of small low-cost FPVs
to replace part of the air defense system
and directly affect the opponent's offensive ability
Ukraine is likely to expand this ability quickly
Although it is not clear how much of a technical obstacle it is to expand this ability
and it is not entirely clear which tactics
will be affected by the expansion of these abilities
But it can be confirmed that using FPVs worth thousands of dollars
to exchange for more expensive reconnaissance drones
can play a contributing role in the battlefield
Fixed-wing reconnaissance drones are scarce for both sides
and cannot be quickly replaced or replenished
These reconnaissance drones are now facing the threat of low-cost FPVs
This may force them to move to a safer area on the front line to carry out activities
But this will also significantly reduce their potential role on the battlefield
Recent videos also show
Ukraine's FPVs intercepted Russian Lvov UAVs on their way to the target
This type of self-propelled cruise UAV
is faster and more time-sensitive than most reconnaissance UAVs
If a UAV can intercept this type of offensive UAV
it shows that the Ukrainian UAV force
already has the necessary external sensors
command and control, and the ability to exchange information
This shows that the Ukrainian force
has at least initially formed a battlefield information system that has coordination and combat capability
and can play a role in combat
Specialized interceptor drones are not new
such as the U.S. Fulton Technology Co., Ltd.'s UAV
the U.S. Andreev Company's Anvil anti-UAV system
and the Roadrunner small-scale UAV
as well as the Leysen Company's Cargo UAV
are all specialized anti-UAV systems
But these drones are also more expensive high-end products
which limits their number
They are often more suitable for attacks
such as the Iranian Shakhtar UAV
Russia usually uses Shakhtar UAVs to bomb the city of Ukraine
Low-cost FPVs as anti-UAV weapons
may change the rules of the Ukrainian battlefield
And this type of anti-UAV weapon
may not only target reconnaissance UAVs
The Ukrainian FPV force
tried to attack a Russian armed helicopter
but failed
At least two attempts failed in the video
It is possible that one day
the FPV, which is faster and equipped with automatic guidance and route planning capabilities
can successfully hit an armed helicopter
This risk will also force Russian pilots
not to dare to approach the front line
This may have a greater impact than hitting a few helicopters
If Ukraine can scale up
this type of warfare that uses drones
it may expand the incidents in these videos
to 100 to 200 times a day
So the Russian troops
may inadvertently
turn from attack to defense
and may not have a chance to recover from failure
That's all for today
Thank you for watching
See you next time
