Switzerland have made serene progress to their second successive Euro quarterfinal.
Now they're looking to smash the glass ceiling and read the first ever semi at a major tournament.
While they've impressed the right of Gareth Southgate's selection today was whether he
might switch to a back three and that's how it looks with Esri Konca replacing the suspended
Mark Gaye. Kobi Mane who keeps his place in midfield having made his first start at the
Euro in the last round. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have scored all four of England's goals so
far and Kane converted a penalty in the last meeting between the nations. Meret Yakin names
an unchanged side for the first time at the tournament with his keeper and back three
having played every minute so far. Zildan Vidner is available again after suspension however
22 year old Fabian Rieder keeps his place in the side. Grillin Bolo put the Swiss in front
in the last meeting between the teams and he's one of the seven different players
who have netted four Meret Yakin's men in Germany so far. England expects is a familiar refrain
in the country and the supporters would have been hoping for a lot better than what they've seen so
far. Sprung a bit of a surprise today with Fabian Rieder keeping his place in the team ahead of the
experienced Zildan Vidner. Four in the area to aim for here and very good covering by Kobi Mane
and he needed to get there. Sheldon Shaqiri an inspired selection against Scotland with that
stunning goal that he scored. Germany almost put to the sword in their final group game. Here's
Saka though slightly behind Walker but it's something that the media and the supporters
back in England have been crying for. Trying to utilize the attacking options better. Here is Saka
too high for Kane. Rice
Walker lifted towards Saka. Controlled it nicely and he's got through here. Saka across.
Ikanji away to defend the cross but this is no contest so far. Saka's got the beating of
great skill and he had to leave him otherwise that was a penalty. He hasn't really put a foot
wrong so far. Excellent performance from him. Bellingham now on the charge as he blocked off.
Daniel Assato says yes and also produces a yellow card. The king of the game. Well
quite clearly didn't fancy a race. Fabian Scheer up against Jude Bellingham. Steps across him.
See the arm goes across him. Don't think you can argue with that even if they haven't found a way
through. Saka and still Bukayo Saka gets the wrong side again. Goes down. Mainu has a go.
Corner is the call. Here's Konsa. Nearly managed to slip it into Kane. It was an important
interception by Ikanji. Bellingham lifted up towards Kane. He couldn't quite get there. Saka
was sniffing around. Vargas has given it away to Bukayo Saka for Rodriguez.
That's an intelligent pass. Here's Impolo up against Konsa. Rolling him and getting the shot
in which is easy for Jordan Pickford but goes down as the first effort on target we've seen so far.
Konsa as well. Fabulous play from Granit Xhaka. So positive with his passing this year though.
Breaking the lines and Impolo back to goal has been excellent.
Konsa has done a pretty good job. Sticks with him. Means he can't get as clean of
contact as he'd like to do when he spins and gets his shot away. Dribbles into the hands of Jordan
Pickford. Pickford towards Kane who's got away from Ikanji but is going to pick up a yellow card
for the manner in which he did so.
That's for the arm across the face. Ikanji was tough. Ikanji.
Chen. That's a nice disguised pass and Doya Cross can go anywhere. It's here for Switzerland.
Can touch their first ever semi-final now of the second half. Better see
later on in the quarterfinal. Well you can't say this hasn't been coming.
Switzerland have been the better side in this second period. They've forced England on the
back foot. Such a dangerous ball but who reacts quickest? It's Impolo. He gets there ahead of
Karl-Walker. Gets enough on it to find the bottom corner.
Clever from Ndoye. Just drifting into the space. The touch of Stones and Impolo on full stretch
gets there ahead of Karl-Walker. It's Switzerland who are heading as things stand into the semi-final.
That's a left-wing back.
Switzerland sitting in now and England are going to find it difficult to find a way through there
already. Had issues trying to cause any problems. Saka goes for goal and scores a stunner!
Sensational! Just what it looked like. Three substitutions and England are back in it but
it's a familiar face. Bukayo Saka who's had the beating of Eibisher all afternoon. This time
rather than going on the outside he's allowed to come in. The goal is opened up but boy is this
special from Bukayo Saka. Inch perfect. Kisses the post. England are back in it.
Zuber wants the return pass. Impolo still up there.
Ndoye. That's a really wild slash.
And Daniele Asato says that will do for the 90 minutes. So we will have another 30 added on.
This is the third time that England and Switzerland have met
at a Euro. The first occasion was at Euro 96.
Zuber lays it off for Eibisher. Here he is again. Look at the run on the far side.
That's a waste. Fabian Scherz should really be doing a lot better.
Palmer. Iberra Ezer. Lifted in and met by Rodriguez. Only a way as far as Declan Rice.
It's a good stop by Sommer.
We've seen this a few times from Declan Rice. He's found his way into the corner and Sommer
at full stretch has to get there. Both missed it there. Bukayo Saka's on to it.
Saka. The worst ball in. It's Jude Bellingham looking for the angle for a hit. And Bellingham
again. Gathered by Sommer. They get a comfortable save from Sommer.
Xhaka initially makes the block. It's back to his feet. It might even have been Freuler
that got the touch. For Switzerland. Over the corner for Switzerland. It's a good one as well.
Pickford has to fist it away. Well he was going for goal and he nearly got the winner.
Switzerland the lead again. Pickford committed. Slow to react. It was so close.
I thought Pickford saved it but it's off the bar.
Xhaka. Shaqiri. Handy pass that. Good try. Pickford beats it away.
Zuba. Rodriguez.
Fittmer.
Zuba. To penalties we go then.
England and Switzerland both here before at a Euro.
Sommer saved an Mbappe penalty to send the Swiss through to the quarterfinals at the last Euro.
It's Cole Palmer for England. And Palmer scores. Confident penalty from the substitute.
The goalkeeper on way. There's plenty of pace on this as well from Cole Palmer.
Team that started this game for England. Up against another Premier League player
in Jordan Pickford. Akanji. Saved by Pickford. Down to his left to keep out Manuel Akanji.
Shootout. Well it was made to wait. Manuel Akanji. Jordan Pickford was slow getting to his line.
Clearly affected him. Rarely seems affected by nerves.
How are they here? Rolled in very casually indeed. It's a call penalty from Jude Bellingham.
Two England penalties. Sommer's gone the wrong way both times. A little pause.
Two tall penalties. First from Palmer. Now from Bellingham.
Switzerland desperately need him to find the goal with this spot kick.
It's Schär. It's in. Very coolly done by Fabian Schär. Dipped through a bottle away.
Eventually got himself in place. Trying to put Fabian Schär off. Not this time.
Saka rolls it in. Didn't look the cleanest hit penalty but it did the job for England.
Puff of the cheeks.
Three penalties in. Three times Sommer's gone the wrong way.
Scored at the last three Euro and World Cups. Six years in England.
Shaqiri. Great penalty. Absolutely drilled into the corner. Corner hit the post. As you say
hats out the pace on it because Pickford guesses the right way. He's right in the corner.
Thomas Frank says he thinks he's the best penalty taker in the world.
Lines of nerves there. He's got a higher standard.
He's looking at the goal. He was not even looking at the ball Ivan Toni.
What an impressive penalty. Just the man well account.
And Dooney scores straight down the middle. Kept his nerve there to send Pickford the wrong way.
It out. He was waiting for Pickford to move. He did. Finds the back of the net and puts the
pressure on Trent Alexander-Arnold who's making his way to the penalty spot. It's Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander on the cusp of going out. Rescued themselves again and they will play against
Turkey or Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday. They have been far from their best in Germany
but they have managed to find a way through and there was no doubting that finish from Trent
Alexander-Arnold. Terrific penalty. Terrific celebrations for England. Spare a thought for
Manuel Akanji. The one man to miss in this penalty shootout but it's England who are celebrating.
The Netherlands or Turkey await them in the semifinals. Massive moment for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
