Johanna Conta has given her verdict on Emma Raducanu's polarizing approach to her career.
Johanna Conta has shared her regrets after failing to copy Emma Raducanu's divisive
approach to her career. The 2021 U.S. Open champion has raised eyebrows for brutally
axing coaches when their relationship no longer works and making questionable scheduling decisions.
But Conta, who previously carried British hopes at Wimbledon during her career,
believes it's the right way to do things and wishes she adopted the same ruthlessness.
Raducanu recently opted to skip French Open qualifying so she could focus on the grass
season. It paid off. She reached the semis in Nottingham and the Eastbourne quarterfinal.
And she followed it up by making it to the last 16 at Wimbledon.
The British No. 3 will now head straight to the American hard courts after deciding against
playing in the Olympics, held on the French Open grounds, to avoid physical complications
with quick surface changes. And Conta is backing Raducanu for doing what she needs to do.
I don't think I'm in any position to judge, to be honest. And I don't think anyone is,
she said of the 21-year-old's schedule. I think this is where, actually, Emma is really good
and very mature. For me, she has a thought. She has a direction in mind and she goes for it and
she makes the decision. And that's a very mature approach for a young player. Speaking at Wimbledon
on Tuesday, the former world No. 4 also brought up Raducanu's reputation with coaches and shared
her own regrets. Conta continued. And the same thing with the coaching teams and stuff. I wish
I did that more where I felt like a coaching situation wasn't working. I didn't wait for it
to run its course because of how I thought, you know, the media would start speaking about it.
