It's finally time to explore our second country of our 90-day backpacking trip,
the Czech Republic. And where better to start than with the capital city of Prague.
First I have a fun surprise planned for Jimmy, then we check out Prague Castle,
and finally we walk six miles through the city in search of an elusive hidden gem.
This is our first full day where we're going to go out and explore Prague. We're in the Czech
Republic for the first time. I have a place in mind that I have not told Jimmy about because
I think it's going to be really, really cool to experience without knowing what it is first. And
I already did the research on it, so that ship sailed for me. But I think it would be really
fun to let Jimmy experience this really cool place without knowing what it is and just walking into
it blindly. And I'm going to walk in there without telling him that that's where we're going.
I've got a couple fun little landmarks picked out on the way. So yeah, we'll see if he likes
it as much as I'm thinking he will. I have absolutely no idea what to expect.
Natalie's not great at keeping secrets, but she's kept this one pretty good. All I know is that
she's let it slip that it starts with an S, and there's a water fountain involved,
so I don't need to bring water. And that's all I know. So is this what you wanted to bring me to?
No, this is a surprise to me. Looks like there's some kind of like pride festival going on.
So this is the Prague Pride Festival. We just totally accidentally are going right through it.
The first stop I picked out on our walk was the Prague Metronome,
which happens to be right kind of in the middle of the action of the Pride Festival.
And I think that was a complete surprise to the both of us. That was awesome. Yeah, we did not
intend to run through Prague's Pride Festival on the way to go see the Metronome, but I think
it made it a hundred times more cool. Yeah, that is so cool. It's such a huge event and everyone's
having so much fun. Yeah, it's so much fun to see like so many people together just having fun with
life. Love it. Are we lost yet? Not yet. We're about two minutes away. Are you taking me to
Footwalker? Surprise! I'm kidding. This is the Cubist Lamp Post, a historical landmark that I
because right next to it, there's a secret entrance to a beer garden.
So it's closed. Is that okay? Oh, it's not supposed to be closed.
All right. Well, there's definitely people in there, but I think that gate is a hundred
percent locked. So I'm hoping there's another secret entrance around the corner.
Stop.
That is perfect timing. I've been really excited to show Jimmy this place because
whenever you come out to the beer garden, you sit in between these two walls and it's so in
the shade and there's just stone on either side of you that it cools you off. This place also
sells really good Czech beer and food. And in Czech, whenever they pour the beers,
they pour a lot of foam intentionally. They say that that's where all the nutrients are.
And the thing I was saying that made Jimmy think where we were going started with an S.
She's let it slip that it starts with an S. Was this. This is called Smážní sýr and it's fried
cheese. I just got one of them for us to split. And then we got some other type of traditional
Czech dish. That's like roast pork. She's been really excited about this place and
she's actually done a really good job of hiding it from me. I guess I'll try the first bite.
That's so good. Really? Yeah, I'm not lying. That's really, really good. You try some. Oh yeah.
That's amazing. It's like the consistency of pulled pork barbecue, which is our favorite food,
but it's got its own unique flavor that I assume is uniquely Czech.
It's delicious. Here's the fried cheese.
Thanks. Thank you. This is amazing. There's like a giant mozzarella stick.
That's really good.
All right. Well, that was totally awesome. Thank you, Matt. Amazing. That went so well.
Thank you. Thanks for letting me surprise you. Yeah, I should have known she was taking us to
this spot because she mentioned a couple weeks ago learning about what she called a gothic
air conditioning, which is, you know, when the stones and the shade provide a natural AC. And
I could definitely feel it in that area right there. That was very neat. That was awesome. The
food is like some of the best food I've ever had. Good morning. We have got a rare opportunity
where everyone else in our little section of the hostel has checked out. And we want to take the
opportunity to give you a little bit of a tour. We have a gorgeous view with three windows. We
got two here and then another one over there. So our room has two beds. This place costs $70 a
night in U.S. It's got a private room, which we love, but we do have a shared bathroom and shared
kitchen. This is where we shower. It's shared with six people. There is a separate room over here for
the bathroom. And then finally, in the middle of everything, right next to the door that goes out
to the hallway, we have a shared kitchen. It's not much. It's like a sink, an electric kettle,
and a stovetop. But it's enough if you want to try and make some quick meals in the hostel.
I don't know if she mentioned it, but there's no air conditioning. So it is a little hot.
But since our roommates left on that side, they left their windows open. We kept our windows open
and now we have a pretty good cross breeze. So it couldn't be worse. So it's actually a little
rainy. So we kind of stepped into an archway to try and take some cover while it dies down, hopefully.
But behind me, that's Prague Castle. It was first built in the ninth century.
Ninth, which is like crazy long ago. And today it serves as the official office for the Czech
president. There's a huge courtyard that we're currently in right now that is free to enter.
And now we're just trying to decide whether or not we want to pay the 22 euros to get the
all building access pass that'll let us go into pretty much every museum around here.
The tricky thing is too, we're over budget on average. Our mistake that we made with the trains
and missing it cost us about 150 US dollars more than we planned to spend. And so that's a day and
a half's worth of budget. We just got to totally make up somewhere else. So it makes it hard to
decide to do things like this. So I promise we're not trying to be stingy. It's just we're trying to
get back on track budget wise. And so we need to cut corners somewhere. And I'm not sure exactly
where we want to do that yet. I think our best bet is to go up there and see if the doors open,
see if it's locked. You know what the deal is. Checking doors. Checking doors. And let's see
if we have to pay to even go in first. They look pretty closed. They're only open for a couple of
hours a day and it looks like we missed our window. It still looks cool out here though.
It looks so cool. I feel like the outside is the cool part. This looks like the most ornate
building in the castle and it's actually the cathedral. The craziest thing to me is that
thinking about how the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were here. It's just such ancient history.
I already made the comment like last week about how just average buildings are already as old
as the U.S. So it's crazy to come here and see a building that's 1200 years old. All right well I
think we made a good decision. The cathedral was closed but we have an hour left on the tower climb
so we paid the money we would have spent to go in to do the tower climb. Natalie's a little unsure
if it's worth it but I think we'll see when we get to the top. I think this was worth it. Yeah good
call Jimmy. You see like the streets and the streetlights in between all the buildings? That's
all inside the castle walls so it's part of the castle. It's like its own mini town. I think we
got our money's worth because we literally stayed so long someone had to come tell us that they're
closing it down and they kicked us out. We got here just in time I guess. All right this part
we would never record so I don't have any evidence to show you but one thing we read before we got
to Czechia was that PDA is a lot more like acceptable here and so it's a lot more common
which now I fully believe. We've seen multiple couples like kissing and making out while just
waiting for the pedestrian walk sides and such. It's the oddest thing. Not wasting a second. I
don't blame them. I mean no judgment here it's just cool to see. All right I know this looks bad
that we're in the Czech Republic ordering burgers but we're 13 days in so that's how
far we made it since we left the U.S. before we ordered our first cheeseburger. It was bound to
happen eventually. And they looked really really good on the menu. They look so good. I got the
classic burger which is basically just lettuce tomato burger and then their special sauce
which it looks really good. And Natalie got it I think just the same thing with cheese.
No I got the jalapeno burger. Oh. So the same thing with jalapenos.
So good. That's so good. So we just know how to prioritize our money right because you can either
pay 40 crowns to get sauce for your fries or spend 50 and get a beer. So we went with the beer.
Obviously. That's also what our waiter said when Natalie asked for the big one. He said
obviously and walked away.
All right so tomorrow is our last day. Well our last full day in Prague. So we're gonna get the
rest of our exploring in tomorrow. We're probably just gonna sign off for tonight and we'll just
pick you up tomorrow. All right now that we're done with the hard part we decided to pick up
the camera. Natalie's got to throw up a map right here later to show how far we walked to get to
this point. And it felt like twice as far because it's 90 degrees. But we've come all the way past
Old Town uh deep into Prague to check out it's called the Grada. It's an artificial well I don't
want to spoil it. I think we're almost there and uh I'll just show you when we get there.
There's a cave. I'm having trouble figuring out what the purpose of it is
but it looks really cool and it's in the middle of this really green park. All right I'll take
over. All right so what we're in right now is actually a series of artificial caves built by
a millionaire about 100 years ago in 1880. Okay that's actually pretty cool. That's cool.
Millionaires are weird. No offense to any watching and also we have a Patreon.
All right well I think in about 15 minutes we explored the entirety of it.
We found it because Natalie was looking up caves in Prague. I was trying to find something cool to
do. And this site only had one review on TripAdvisor so we thought it'd be really nice and
out of the way. It was out of the way for sure. It was kind of a long walk to get here. Um but
it's kind of cool. So again it's called the Grada in Prague. Hidden gem? Yeah. Or just hidden?
You let us know. This is our last night in Prague and we're honestly pretty sad about it.
Prague has been our favorite city so far. I can definitely see us coming back here.
So I think we're gonna have to give up on finding a spot to eat in the Old Town Square.
The police literally kicked Natalie out from saving a spot for us. They were really nice
about it though. But as you can see behind us it's completely packed. So I think we're just
gonna head to the nearby park. But before we leave I wanted to showcase this tower right here.
That is the oldest clock in operation and it's the third oldest astronomical clock. I think it's
really cool. We've heard it chime a few times now and uh it kind of just sounds like a normal
clock tower. But it's the original. It's the original. All the others sound like it.
Exactly. It's got some cool history behind it. I can hardly see you right now. It's getting really
dark quick. I don't think I realized how tired I was until I got back to the room. Yeah we walked
a long way today for us. It was at least six miles. So for dinner we found a pretty cool
budget hack and that is just uh go to the grocery store instead of going out to dinner.
I know crazy stuff. But uh you can get like pastries here for like 40 cents each. Um I get
a pre-made wrap for I think this is like a dollar fifty. I got a pre-made salad. To supplement it
I've been getting a cucumber. So all together this was about seven dollars. We did have a little pit
stop on the way to the grocery store. But I mean we're here to have fun so it was well worth it.
And beer is so cheap here. But I think we're going to wind down for tonight. We'll probably end the
vlog here and uh pick you back up uh tomorrow which is probably next week for you guys. So
we're staying in Czechia. Uh but you'll have to tune in next week to see which city we go to.
We're real excited for it so. Oh yeah. We'll see you next week. All right thanks so much for
watching. Bye. I made friends with the police. Did they tell you to leave? They did.
Everyone else is sitting on that side of the fence. They got asked to leave too. Okay. I'm
sorry I left you over there. That's okay. It's sunsetting. I gotta get a cool shot. I know.
