An overnight motorcycle camping adventure to the Victorian High Country, where the plan was to tackle the steepest hill climbs that Vic high country has to offer (Billy Goats Bluff) but things don't go to plan and we have to recover a drowned bike which we had to ditch overnight.
This was the hardest yet best and most rewarding moto adventure I've been on, and it really tested the WR250R but it passed with flying colours, always reminding me that the bike will take me wherever my skill allows and that dual sports can really ride anything an enduro bike can.
Some of the tracks featured in the video include:
- Huggets Track
- Mt Angus Track
- Avon Track
- Mt Margaret Track

Yes! Easy! Oh! Flowing creek here and we've got some iodine tablets. Oh man.
Welcome back to another video guys. We're out heading into the Victorian high country today.
There's seven of us. All different kinds of bikes. I'm on the smallest as usual.
250. Ranging all the way up to the 1100. The big Africa twins. So yeah. Should be a good
overnight camping trip. Planning to hit some technical stuff. We're going to try and go
up the Ligoats. The off-road. Oh! Potholes everywhere. Get my eye on the track. But yeah.
Heading towards some actual trails. This is just a gravel road but we'll see what we get ourselves
into. All good. Oh! We've had an off. I didn't catch it. Looks like he got wet but all good.
Bike looks good. Oh! She is loose. I really should have aired down just when we stopped just then.
This is some of the rockiest terrain I've been on.
Look at that. GoPro probably doesn't do a good job of just showing how rocky it is.
Oh! Bit of a climb up here. Shit!
Dude this is steep.
Come on little WR.
Righty! Whoa! Yes!
Good job WR. You've done well. Hopefully everyone else is all right with that one. It is pretty steep.
It doesn't help that you don't have much traction.
My god!
It's like enduro riding.
Let's go WR. Let's go.
Oh! This is just amazing. You get the best views out in the high country and we're only just
we're only just getting into it.
Oh! Let's see what we're getting ourselves into though. I'm curious if we
tackle anything today that was as steep as that section because that was pretty damn steep.
At least descending now which for some people they prefer actually ascending but
on the little WR descending it's pretty easy but again I don't want to jinx it and
go over the handlebars now. It's the bigger bikes. I remember the T7 I prefer doing
hill climbs and ascents rather than going down because yeah they're just so unwieldy to control.
Yeah the WR it's just no problem and yeah with these down
reduced pressures it feels a lot better already.
And like I said I'm losing it.
I'll leave a little bit of room in case someone comes off that will be running them over.
Oh! Let's go.
Look at that. Beautiful.
Oh! Oh man.
Yeah. Oh man that looks gnarly.
All right let's watch the technique because I've never done a proper river crossing before.
Be standing. Accelerate. Fight the bike. All right that's foot down when you can.
Oh that is. The question is is that the best line? Let's see that line. Oh!
All right come on. Heart's racing. My heart is racing. Let's go Lindy. Yes. Easy. Oh!
Shit. Oh no.
Come on man. You can do this.
Oh come on dude. Oh just be ready to kill the kill switch.
Man it's so nerve-wracking. Like hill climbs all day I'll do but when you've got the
the potential to flood the engine and break everything. Oh I don't want to be removing
this tank right now honestly. Oh man my nerves. You can't do worse than me.
That bastard of a thing.
Oh you did better than me.
Yeah.
Did you think this through? Like is it the normal? Yeah. Yeah.
We're supposed to know how we turn the wheel again. Yeah manual.
Okay moment of truth. You can do it. Yes.
I just mind them. Yeah yeah. Just a little bit forward. It sounded like. That sounded better.
Oh beautiful.
All right guys. Back going. Took an hour and a bit there to drain the
390 Lindy's bike but we got the water out. So it was worth it was definitely worth
de-watering it because didn't want to start it there with all that water in the cylinder.
All good? Oh all right we got it started. It was um actually a fuel line that was uh
crimped or blocked because of the fuel tank not being put on properly. So
awesome we got that going and now we're gonna have to take a different route because we want
to get to Dargo in time to get food. So I don't think we're gonna be taking the initial route.
Rocky. If I packed some fresh socks I'm pretty sure I did.
I'd be really bummed if I didn't though because these socks are soaked right through.
I've got to work out how to dry my shoes though because I don't think
well my boots I don't think they're going to dry overnight.
So the plan is guys we've got to head to the nearest general store which sells uh motorcycle
oil. We're going to need to drop the oil in Lindy's 390. The cyclas is very milky which
I mean means the oil is very milky so a lot of water got in
and obviously as soon as you can you want to try and get fresh oil in there. So
I'm making my way back because I've just got word that the bike's actually stopped now
potentially with a oil issue. So so I'm going into town to get the oil. I'm going to head back
and meet up. Oh don't want to go off there on my own. Meet up with the waiting party
and hopefully we can get the bike sorted.
I'm pretty sure no one's coming this way but I don't there shouldn't be any reason to.
Oh see look at this.
Whoa oh man.
All right guys lots of decisions have been made but we've dumped the bike in the bush there
and they're going to ride two up. We're going to try and get to Dargo.
They've got a few technical tracks so we'll see how this goes. I'm leading though so
fingers crossed they do all right because it's pretty technical up ahead.
Lay down. Keep moving again. I'll be fine.
Oh good morning guys. We made it through the night. I'll show you where we camped.
This is our campsite which is at the back of the Dargo hotel. There's our setup. A lot of
four-wheel drivers here and I've woken up to these sheep looming. So now I need to go to the toilet
but I don't want to use these boxes so I might go look at something else. I'll check back in soon.
Ended up conceding defeat and using the port-a-potties.
Not a fun time but you gotta do what you gotta do. So heading back to camp now. Everyone should
be waking up soon. We'll get ready, get some breakfast and get out to repair Lindy's bike.
Hopefully we can get it going and be back on the tracks. So yeah hopefully should be a good day.
Hopefully it doesn't rain. They forecasted a little bit but the sky looks pretty clear.
A bit of clouds in the air but nothing too bad. See the fog from this morning.
The sheepies are wondering what the hell I'm doing and I'll make my way back to camp.
All right guys so we're leaving Dargo now. A break here to build up the bikes.
So of course we get that all working and back on the tracks and we're intending to get back
on the track that we were meant to do yesterday and then following the route that we had planned
for today. That does mean that we won't be doing billy goats but that's all right. It just means
we'll come back here to uh to attempt it again. So that's not to say that there isn't any technical
tracks coming up. I'm pretty sure Avon river track is um or Avon track is pretty technical
especially. And here's the bike all safe and sound. Beautiful. All right guys we've got
Lindy's bike going and we are off. I'm excited. You know it's a it's midday so it's been a bit of a
flap around but we got there in the end and I'm happy. The bike's going.
Oh man these hill climbs are awesome.
Let's go WR.
Definitely not third gear. I'm going to stay in second. I'm going to smack the front tire a bit there.
Wow this is decent.
Oh yeah that's decent. Oh man.
Shit. Almost lost the rear there. Bloody hell. That was scary. It started going now. It started
going sideways one way. I got too quick. I got overconfident and um let it go too fast.
Hill climbs for days. This is the most hill climbs I've ever done in one day.
Far out. This is honestly just as steep as Billy Goats. Just not as rocky.
And obviously doesn't go for as long but man there's three river crossings coming up.
If we have to come back up this oh damn this is going to be hard.
Over there. You all right? It's freaking hot guys. Oh man it's just cooling off
and we'll get going but making progress on the Avon track which is not bad. Here are the bikes
just after crossing. Pretty much everyone got through. Even Lindy got through other
than she dropped it at the end but overall no drowned bikes which is beautiful.
She's steep. Oh my god. That is scary.
Let's go Rocco. Yes.
You all right?
Nice. Almost. I got it.
Oh my god the WR's working hard. I got the arm pump. Oh my god.
Oh shit. I didn't even notice. Did anything, did you lose anything or is that the only bag?
Oh man. You know what? I said earlier that I prefer downhills on this
bike but man these are crazy. It's so loose. Sorry? Yeah. Oh no.
Oh man.
See I don't want the rear to start going that way. You reckon neutral's better?
Man I reckon I'm better at that. Oh man that is steep.
Shit. I think so. I kind of hurt my finger but I think it's all right. Man.
It just loses it. Yeah I still thought I should have done.
Guys this is no joke. I've done billy goats. This is significantly harder. Significantly.
Oh this is slightly concerning. Low on water. Freaking impossible hill climbs. Take a look
at this one. Man the video doesn't do it justice but this is, this is steep. Like really steep.
Oh man. All right we got this. Water's becoming a concern so. Say again? I'm just videoing.
Water's becoming a concern so we're getting out of the, out of the flowing creek here and
we've got some iodine tablets. Oh man I am cooking. My face looks so red.
All right good luck. Crikey. Shit. It's constant. I can barely talk when I'm concentrating
for dear life. My side stand. Far out. I definitely feel as the day's gone on
that I'm just not talking much because I'm exhausted. I've eaten breakfast in the morning
and then had a muesli bar and that's it. So I'm getting to the point now where
I'm really looking forward to some tarmac on the way home which is not usually the case.
This little WR250R is just incredible. You can take it up these crazy hills. It doesn't complain.
