so hey folks welcome back to show us
your dub podcast I am with Mark and
Debbie Garrett Mark contacted me
probably a good year or so ago uh about
his 61 turquoise Beetle uh this is
definitely a beetle that's been in his
family for quite some time and uh it's a
beautiful piece and we finally got
around to doing this podcast so I'm
going to introduce Mark and Debbie guys
how are you and what's happening in the
world with your dub hey Chris very good
it's nice to finally get this uh rolling
up here after a year of attempts and
trying and so forth so this is this is
fun so I'm glad we can we can do this so
yeah so tell me about your bug I mean I
got it briefly from an email from me and
I do have some photos I'm gon to share
with the audience here but um I mean I
we I love turquoise we've worked on
turquoise bugs before 61 is a unique
year uh I mean if people don't know it's
it's the last year of the snowflake tail
lights right um it's the first year of
the 40 horse stale air version of the 40
horse which is also kind of unique and
rare in its own sense and um one uh
standout feature too is it it still has
no gas gauge correct that's correct yeah
when I got it from my dad he had
actually retrofitted a lot of later
model stuff to it one the first things
did I Rec for fitted it back to the
correct look for a 61s the first thing I
did was take the gas out and hook the
reserve back up and uh it works so you
just have to what I do is I just check
the gas every time I leave so sure yeah
that that's the one tank that's the flat
tank because you know 60 still had the
camel hump tank from the 50s and the 61
was the is the flat tank but with no
float you know in it so if you could
find that tank those are rare tanks to
find yeah you're right come to think of
it that's right so yeah there's a
nuances in the 61 and again to the
Casual person you wouldn't see that but
one of the weird things too the front
transmission mount that goes between the
frame and the front of the nose pone is
a one- year old bount and oh no kidding
I didn't know that you better pray you
don't need it because I think I might be
coming up on that and I'm still looking
so that's just weird obscure things like
that they did and like you say this is a
there's a lot of changes on the 61 which
obviously the biggest being the up the
upgrade to the 40 horse engine so okay
yeah did you do anything to the engine
as far as um upgraded performance- wise
big boore anything like that yeah when I
got this car from my dad back in 95 when
he lived in North Carolina he had a
workshop out back and the original
engine that this car set on the floor
for a long time the problem was being an
original 40 horse the cam bards in the
case were wed out and nobody back there
was doing line boring for can bearings
so the engine just finally disappeared I
don't know what ever happened to it so
what's in here now is a uh single port
1500 case and then it's got bumped up to
1641 cylinders so gotcha okay okay so
that's fresh air or you kept it stale
air look it is fresh air so it's uh it
looks period correct but obviously it's
got the updated one of the things he did
he updated it to 12 volts so you know he
did a lot of things like that the one
thing didn't do he didn't update the
brake system to a dual circuit brake
system so I don't know why he didn't do
that but he didn't so okay yeah so you
guys are from uh Columbus Ohio area
right yeah okay and this car's always
been in that area and and it's you you
mentioned about your father finding this
car yeah I did the birth certificate uh
about a year ago uh the new version of
birth certificate they have and and a
couple things I didn't know uh the
history of the car it was imported to
Texas originally and that was in 61 so
there's about an 11e span how it ended
up in North Carolina I don't know so
okay when my father was working at the
BW dealership which was Henderson
Volkswagen in Charlotte uh like I say he
was the body man there and it was
abandoned out back of the body shop
somebody just left the car ha so he
talked to the dealership what he wanted
to do initially was make a race car out
of it and he wanted the dealership to
sponsor the race car and yeah I'm going
to share my screen right now and show
the folks the pictures of that okay if
they see that is that the race car right
there do you see it is that the red one
yeah well that's not this car so that
was oh that was when uh it's a long
story personal wise but that's when he
still lives in Ohio he built a circle
track car out of that car it was a 65 or
six I think oh I see okay so heed he
wanted to do something similar to this
and thank God they turned him down
because it probably wouldn't be sitting
here now if that was the case so and
that's your that that's your pop right
there huh yeah yeah yeah yeah notice
notice the high-tech safety equip with a
leather strap around the door
yeah oh right here yeah yeah that's
hilarious no hun device back then so
yeah yeah that's so funny so that's what
he Vision with this car and then once
they turned him down he just decided to
go ahead and restore it of course back
in the day it was more a fix up than a
restore but yeah it wasn't that old of a
car back then so you know of course back
in the day you went after the dealership
you got new parts you put them on he had
a paint booth accessible to him so it
was a lot simpler back in the day to do
this with o Parts because that's really
over was back yeah unlike the the video
I did recently talking about the parts
today and the situation that that we are
up against um with the quality of parts
today is getting very very scary in my
eyes um it's terrible it's terrible yeah
I mean especially when it comes to
safety features and things like that so
but um this is you guys in front of your
beauty yeah you know what when I got
this car from my father back in 95 he
had all these accessories he had never
put on the car he had the fender skirts
he had the pop out windows he had the
stone guards he had all these things
that they never put on the car and when
I got it from him I said yeah you know
all that stuff's going to go in the car
when to get it so and he was fine with
that but yeah one of the things speaking
about afterm Market pars and so forth
the pop out one is when I got them from
my dad they were wrapped in uh like a
brown tissue paper with the par stick
they're
no oh wow and they must fit beautifully
yeah oh they do well although 61 again
that was the last year that they didn't
free drill holes for those hinges yeah
so you had to drill Debbie and I had a
fun afternoon drilling holes and she'd
stand outside and hold the window in
place and that was some nerve-wracking
work but yeah we got them on and it's oh
they're beautiful they're just they fit
so nice hey Debbie do you do you drive
the car at all every once in a while um
I don't drive it very often I'm more of
a V8 person and it doesn't quite have
the speed that I like but okay I I got
married late in life and I always I told
myself once you see the try toy room I
said the first woman that comes down
these steps and thinks this is cool I'm
G to marry her she walked down the steps
and she goes this is really neat I go
well we're getting married Ah that's
great yeah you spoke to me about you
spoke to me about your toy collection uh
I'm gonna thumb through the pictures
right here guys if how many years did it
take you to put this collection together
it's about 40 years of collection so wow
yeah now the reason the reason I did
that although I never anticipated it
would get this out of control is in 85
886 I restored and fixed up a 68 calic
bug it was a popular thing to do back
then so I did that uh and then when I
finished that I wanted something to do
but I wasn't ready for another
restoration so I just wanted something
to do within the hobby so I started
collecting toys and one thing led to
another here we are and shot right here
I encourage him to
buy toys so yeah she's worse than I am
she'll call me out and go you gotta look
at this and I'll go to the website oh
you're right i' gotta get that so yeah
and look I I'm still into toys I mean
even at my like I got toys behind me I
got RC Volkswagen toys toys that I could
actually run with uh but most of the
time they're shelf Queens just kind of
like what you have
but um the one decision I made when I
started that was guys go one of two ways
they either buy to buy and sell and
trade or they buy just to enjoy the toy
for what it is and I made that decision
yeah I don't I mean you need people to
buy and sell because that's how you get
a lot of the toys but I said you know
what I'm going to take them out of the
box I'm going to enjoy them I'm going to
display them nicely and that's the
decision I made so I've saved some of
the more expensive boxes but everybody
always ask if I saved the boxes and I
said well look at the size of this room
I would need another room just for boxes
and I don't have them so so I just
decided to enjoy them for what they are
so all right so why don't we take a trip
down to your toy collection and you can
get behind the camera and describe to us
what you got here we are at the base of
the uh basement steps for entering the
toy room uh there's a few antique ads
and so forth on the walls leading down
to the toy room
and as you enter the lobby this is the
warmup for the main room here we have
display cases of uh different sizes of
beetles buses uh anything VW or Porsche
related is
displayed when I started I tried to keep
all the groups together the bugs the
buses the carag and so forth but as it's
expanded it's sort of hard to do that so
I still try to have main group in but
it's sort of everything is everywhere
after a certain point so I always like
people that come down here for the first
time because they think that this this
is the main toy room well it's a nice
warmup and it's a nice presentation but
that's not the main toy room main toy
room so here we go this is 40 Years of
collecting uh it would take hours to
point out specific things but a couple
of uh big oversights uh one when we
swing back around to the on side of the
room the caraga poster was from the
dealership in North Carolina that my
father worked at Henderson Volkswagen
and they were going to throw that out
and my dad had it uh in his garage for
years it was damage it was wrinkled so I
flattened it out the best I could
cleaned the original frame up and it's
the perfect focal point of the room for
the kagia display so there are many
people that want that poster and they're
not going to get it so it's just a nice
accent to the room so uh like I said
it's a 40-year collection uh probably
about 4,000
pieces and uh it's constantly changing
about every 6 months to a year I will
add some cases some display items uh
areas that are always expanding uh the
center island is one of the latest
editions over the last several years
it's a nice Edition to still keep the
room open but have a lot of storage
space to use but being a collector
that's always the number one problem you
always need more
space that's what we've got so if you
swing around to the next little room
that's the combination trophy room and
uh some additional toys now the main
focus is vws and Porsches there is one
exception that I make and it's an
obscure little niche uh with the
collecting world is the auto Union and
uh Audi race cars so and the Berlin to
Rome car up there obviously but just a
lot of uh race cars over the years the
auto unions are fascinating from a
historical standpoint from the mid-30s
to the late 30s before the war kicked in
they were uh just
unbelievably engineered cars by Dr
Porsche so that's one of my few
exceptions I Veer off to collect those
but uh other than that like I say I try
to keep focused on the BW and Porsche
Niche mainly VW uh the other thing in
this room are trophies from over the
years of going to car shows uh probably
35 years total uh a few of them are from
my 68 Cal bug uh some of them are from
our 67 camper we had for a while but the
majority are from Gertrude she's quite
the popular gal so incredible toy
collection you got there I mean how long
you said 40 years to get to get back to
to make to get that collection was there
any of those to did you have to build
any of those I've got a of model kits I
haven't built yet I I told myself if I
retired two aprils ago and I said I
would start building them and that's two
and a half years ago and I haven't done
that yet so I probably need to do that
at some point I got some some rare kits
I mean the majority were available back
in the 80s and 90s so the big redel the
uh I think it's a 16 scale Gia and
Beetle are really nice so I'll probably
start with that some of the Lego stuff
are real popular stuff but yeah a lot of
the stuff you get to a point where I'm
really selective now what I collect a
lot of limited editions and you know
just high-end stuff because you come to
a point where you just run out of room a
right yeah I know I probably need
another rock back here I have another
space here with some more RC's I just
picked up a really cool gem these are
the ones you built so back in the day in
the 80s this was the highlight of the
80s these RC cars and this is the
monster Beetle and found pretty mint and
we had to build these when were kids
yeah you know this was I sat with my dad
and in the kitchen and we had all the
little screws and all the you know
little bolts and just laid out and um
this was the hottest thing back then so
this is memories for me this is my era
and and working with my dad on these
things and then actually having to run
them changing the motors and the speed
controllers and that kind of thing so
yeah it's just it's super fun I mean it
just it brings you back in time you know
it's just an enjoyable hobby that's all
you know really you learned a lot
mechanical essential stuff like
soldering and and on those things you
had suspension set up and different
settings and gear and stuff like that so
well previous to that back in the 60s
and 70s I raced slot cars so it's a
similar application as far as the
engineering and things you learn I mean
things to this day that I go I refer
back to some of that knowledge I got
back then so now do you pass any
Volkswagen slot cars I know you said you
had the radio controlled but the slot
cars are really interesting too yeah
they are I've never no I've never gotten
into slot stuff my dad used to do slot
stuff in Brooklyn yeah you know when he
was younger uh but no I I've I've been
strictly RC from when the 80s came in
80s and 90s when the Heyday the Golden
Age the RC age they call it um that's
that's what I grew up with but I guess
that's part of yeah like we got handy
you know and then I could work on the
the real bug you know it just um and
with these you know with the little
pieces you know you work because the
Volkswagen has a lot of little pieces
you know and I my my strength is in the
Cosmetic stuff you know the door handles
and the seat upholstery the headliners
the tops all the little pieces that put
all that stuff together I think that you
know thankfully since working on those
cars back in the 80s the little cars
that's helped me with the with the cars
today you know so um speaking of your
car it what was the restoration period
on that
61 so my dad uh acquired the car back in
summer 73 and he finished it up in 74 so
I mean obviously he was working
full-time at the body shop at the
dealership then so I'm sure he would do
a lot of weekend stuff and after hours
and all that so probably about a year
for the initial build now
the uh the condition of the car is
there's never had any rust panels
replaced on it uh it's had the section
underneath the battery replaced which is
not uncommon but everything else all the
all the body panels are original uh
from' 61 there's no aftermarket parts on
the body at all so okay very good and so
that I can't believe that paint still
holding up since
74 yeah when I got it from my dad he uh
we were talking and it had sat under a
cport for a couple of years so it had
basic protection but it it needed some
attention especially being a single
stage so he goes you know you'll
probably have to repaint that when you
get it back home and go you know what
I'm going to work with this a while and
it took took about a week to to bring it
back to what you see now but it's it's
uh it's held up really well and I just
the fact that my dad painted that I
cannot bring myself to repaint that so
yeah wow that's very very cool and then
I saw on the inside um the steering
wheel is like the darker shade of green
now I know I think it was 61 only maybe
they did that um well and I sort to take
a uh a note from your uh contrast book
and you do interior so the correct color
for that I think it's called ice blue
and it's a like a medium not a dark not
a white blue it's not a very distinctive
color but when I put the TMI interior in
with the turquoise and the plad I went
ahead and just did the dark green
steering wheel just as contrast so
gotcha okay because that is a unique
thing I think it's only 61 if I'm not
mistaken if anybody can correct me you
want to leave it in the comment section
below I thought it was only 61 where
they kind of did that where they made a
shade off from the color of the car on
the steering wheel of the column the E
bra you know all that stuff um actually
cool it's supposed to have a the E bra
rubber uh boot is supposed to be a
turquoise also oh wow yeah good luck
finding that I don't know do they even
repop that I don't even know not the
turquoise no when I got the car from my
dad the rear mat was turquoise and and
somehow the front had gotten replaced
but the rear mat was the original mat
and he had D he had sprayed black dye
over it so I started to scrub it and I
go that's the original mat so wow but
just got the wolburg West the two-piece
uh vinyl four covering so it's just the
M okay okay I like to find somebody that
could could dye those I don't know how
easy that would be that's a lot of
material to done ium you know I have a
car a fellow down here in pompo beach
that has a 66 pagali interior off white
beetle has got the red pagali interior
he actually painted the rubber mats the
red color um it looked a little too
shiny uh to some degree it could have
should have probably been like more of a
matte color or flat color uh but they
have the they have paints out there to
work on rubber so they do but I would
think still over time I mean it's it it
it's going to crack uh I would think
over time but if you want to try to get
as close as you can I mean there are
options for you and and so when did you
update the
interior uh that would have been about
15 years ago it's been a while okay so
one of the things the TMI kit when you
look at this when I'll show you the
interior the it's actually for a 65 and
later so the seats on a 65 later are
shorter than the seatbacks and well also
the door cars are longer than this
because the windows were shorter on the
sides so I took it to the upholstery
place they had to add on about four
inches of uh corresponding green area on
the bottom to make everything work so
gotcha okay that's one of the things
when I ordered the kit I go well it
should fit until I got everything out
and I go Ah that's why it doesn't fit so
then I took it to the upholster guys and
they sewed everything up and made it
look really good so oh that's good oh
very good so that car has never been off
the chassis it's it's always been
together that's correct one things I
when I got it back in 95 I took some 3M
body sealer the black body the 3M
Ma I cleaned up that seam are and just
resealed everything but it's it's
watertight it's never any leaks on at
all so oh that's awesome that's awesome
yeah just fun to drive I'll tell you
yeah that's awesome um
as you said it's also one of those
things that you don't ever want to take
it out and go to the gas station and not
want to be bothered because you're GNA
talk for about a half hour when she pull
out to the gas station everybody has
a no doubt no doubt about it yeah so but
uh Debbie you don't you drive stick I'm
assuming I do oh very good it's a you're
you're a rare bird these
days it's like a dying art right we have
it is our daily driver has paddle shift
and she goes that's not shifting I don't
you have a clutch you shouldn't be
shifting yeah right right very
cool I don't know whether it shows up in
this shot or not but when we do the walk
around at gertude uh gertude shares a
garage with Debbie's uh 2005 Mercedes
CLK converted so okay that's uh she she
likes the speed and I like to put
arounds there you go oh that's hilarious
I we have been to a couple sh shows that
are By Invitation Only like Concourse
shows and it's hard to get them to
accept gude the way that she is because
she has period accessories even though
it's period accessories and you've got
nine VW people judging these classes and
you talk to your blue in the face but
they just don't get it so yeah I I get
that too when I go to shows was I have
some accessories on my Beatles and yeah
for the most part I mean we we're
putting accessories on these cars that
would have normally never had you know
again these were not pretty cars at the
time they were they were daily drivers
point A to point B so there was no you
know a bling to put on them but they
were offered and I I do have a book
that's about this thick that has Pages
upon pages of so many accessories that
were offered for these cars just go to
the dealership and you could have gotten
these accessories so I do have to
explain that to the showgoers that that
because most people just remember the
car being a plain Jane car right you
know even even White Walls they don't
realize that white walls were offered
and because most people didn't see white
walls on a beetle right yeah now I go
back and forth these are new Coker bias
pies and believe me I I thought long and
hard to replace the ones that were on
there and I thought you know for no more
than I drive the car they're adequate I
mean they ride soft it's a nice soft
drive but directionally well it's it's a
two-hand to drive so you got to hang on
so yeah no that's I usually get their
coca radial tires they're not cheap
they're like 220 225 a piece now um I
mean there are cheaper Brands out there
that I pointed out in my videos but I do
want to tell people that they even
saying a disclaimer on those even the
radials that do not take this car out
with these radios in within Clement
weather with even rain so the gripping
is not great and then the White Walls
they start to yell pretty quickly on
those cheaper tires so it's the old
saying you get what you pay for but know
if you are on a budget you know you
could go with those tires um you yeah
yeah now before we got the CER tires
though they had portal walls that you
could just buy the the white wall and
put it on your black Tire right and we
did that for a lot and do you know the
story about Porter walls and why you
probably shouldn't run
them well they do fly out I mean I
pointed it out in my videos we used to
put them on our my early Restorations um
and yeah if you're still on a budget but
yeah they were popular back in the day
that's why I went with the first ones
that I did the thing is we were at a
show years ago up in Michigan and it was
a a porta wall on a radial tire so
you've got the somewhat of a puffy
sidewall and this guy walks up and he
says check this out he pulled the Porta
wall back they had cut into the sidewall
yeah they do yep that's I say they're
more for puddle jumping around town
going out for ice cream you know keeping
it you know 30 miles hour 40 miles an
hour but know highway driving they're
really not ideal they'll do exactly what
you say and they start to fray even on
the edges of them he said the one happen
was he said if you get into a panic
situation and slam on the brakes the
sidewalk would just rip sure so that's I
think we came home that weekend and I
ordered the Coker wide white so y yeah
they they're fine for a budget and
they're like I said they're fine for
just going out to the store or something
but if you're going up at 60 65 miles an
hour something like that right yeah
you're playing with fire there you know
it's it's one of those things uh and
they do yellow too you got to keep up on
them and a lot of that that are made
today they don't even feel like rubber
anymore they feel like a plastic uh
compound
um poker's a Quality Tire so you're
again you're gonna get what you pay for
so I will say unfortunately when I got
this car from my dad he had 67 rims on
it which were a little bit wider and he
had radial tires on it and Bo do a thing
run nice when it's got that setup on it
so yeah I got radials even on my 504
convertible on the stock wheel and it
just it feels like it it coasts it
floats you know it it's the bumps takes
the bumps well it's not you're not going
with the crack in the road you know with
the bias even though I know the bias is
more period correct looking you know you
got to draw the line somewhere when it
comes to practicality and safety you do
so know my my idea would be if we ever
do any driving tours uh is to get this a
separate set of 67 wheels and some nice
radios and just you know swap them out
that would be the ideal so yeah so last
question I got for you what where did
you get the name
from it is my father's mother's name so
it was my grandmother on my father's
side gotcha and I mean when you look at
her that that's gery right there that's
that's a g
old German girl yeah
yeah people used to make fun of me when
I used to name my Beatles like why you
name the beetle I'm like how do you not
look at it and think it's a
character you know it's totally a
character it's got to have a name what
are you kidding it is and you know it's
funny even to this day when I'm at shows
or just driving around kids to this day
still love these cars they love the
shape it's cute they want to touch it
and it's it's just I mean to this day
it's still it's still a a fun car I and
that's why I hope it can still keep the
youth engaged because I mean I can go to
car shows and you know when I see the
girlfriends or the wives on the on the
you know the the guy's arm and they
don't know anything about cars but when
they see a beetle they know exactly what
it is you know so and they think it's
adorable and they want one you know it's
it's one of those things so I hope this
keeps the longevity of the car you know
I hope so yeah we have we have a real
active car culture in Columbus Ohio
within a probably 50 mile radius we got
15 to 20 shows every weekend during the
summer so most of those are multi make
shows but uh you know it's it's an act
of car culture and it's uh I'm the same
way when I see somebody that you know
you think that they're really interested
in the history of the car and the
mechanics and so forth I definitely take
the time to talk that up and it's the
fact that they show the interest which
is good that's what you want to see yeah
we need to keep it alive because I've
had this conversation before I I have no
crystal ball I really hope there's still
another five 10 maybe more years of
interest in this car I don't want it to
die off like say the Model T or the
model A which doesn't have much interest
anymore um right you know because that
generation is kind of gone so but I this
does tend to cross some generations the
other thing is with some modifications I
mean this you can daily Drive these cars
and you can't do that with the mark 2 so
no exactly exactly yeah
notely and and as much as like the parts
are not as great today there's still a
ton of parts that you can buy to put
these together I mean you know you don't
have to dig too much if you if you if
you have a 60s 7s model Beetle the parts
are still readily available um you know
certain aspects like fuel injection
stuff is getting a little scarce but it
is and finding people to work on that
particular setup because it's not as
simple as a car Breer obviously so so uh
my club members would be really upset
with me if I didn't do a little spiel
about our local Club here
uh okay so the name of the club is the
central Ohio vintage Volkswagen club uh
it's the same club that Doug Barber is
in and active in uh we started about 35
years ago uh mainly local but we have
members all the surrounding states but
the reason we started it was is this was
pre-internet days and we started it to
put people in contact with each other
that had Parts had Services had things
that they could offer different people
from the club to keep these things going
even back then it was starting to be a
network type of a deal where you know
you needed to know somebody who could do
a poster you could do body or whatever
so that's why the club started and it's
35 years and going and it's it's an
active Club so we're very we're very
blessed to still continue so oh that's
great you know like you're talking about
a time when even when I started you know
early internet late 90s early 2000s when
I started the business and yeah there
was not much on the internet
you know to to learn about these cars so
I had to get books or I was I bought the
whole you know VHS tapes uh series at
the time from the bug me videos jbugs
hads videos yeah and you know you had a
you had a spend money to learn and get
this knowledge now today I think we take
it for granted you know that there's
information at our fingertips in our
hands right now like we're out in the
garage and we we got a problem we could
just look it right up on the phone and
there going to be a YouTube video and
you know I tell that to people you know
for 20 years or so 17 18 years I've been
on YouTube giving out this information
you know prior to this you know you you
had to go to the library or maybe take
out something or or look at a book you
know it it was one of those things I
think we uh we definitely take it for
granted today that we got you know so
much uh you know useful information free
information at our fingertips uh so the
kids especially the kids today because
it's always been there for them right
they don't know anything else my age we
appreciate the the trajectory of how
that's gone I know when I built back in
the 80s when I built my 68 calic bug you
know you get the your copy of VW Trends
or hot vws and you go back to the
advertisers and you order four fenders
and two weeks later they show up on the
UPS truck and you had to write a check
to do that and that's that was how the
transactions went and it wasn't
instantaneous so no I know we definitely
defin there is a spoiled nature to it
today you know and and I tell people all
the time I like you know back in the day
you you would have spent a lot of money
to to to learn this or take a course or
something to learn all this now it's
right here for you so yeah uh but uh but
it's cool that you got a club like that
that goes back prior to all that stuff
and you know you still keep some of
those traditional methods right um and
still networking is great right face
communication yeah we still have an
honest God newsletter that gets nailed
out every month that's on paper it's old
school uh so again we've been blessed so
the original found members there 12 guys
that started the club and as the years
go on you get burned out and get tired
and just when the original people say
you know what let's do one more car show
and be done with it you get this new
group of people that energize things and
it just it sort of feeds on itself after
a while so we've been blessed over the
years to have some really good younger
people we have a gal up in Cleveland
Ohio that does our our club website
which is professional level uh we have
Doug Barber does the historian stuff we
have a fellow that works at a print shop
that does the newsletter print a
newsletter so it's again it's a nice mix
of talented people to keep this thing
going so great some of the founding
members or several of the founding
members are still active in the club our
oldest member is 92 oh that's awesome
and our youngest is probably probably
early 20s oh I was thinking the kids the
babies of the oh that's true probably
one or two years old
yeah we've got the whole rain that'd be
great hopefully those kids keep it alive
man that'd be great but as far as your
car last question um you guys planning
on keeping it forever or passing it down
y well we always said we'd give it to
our grandson because he was the first
one that showed any interest in um cars
in general uh but it'll probably go to
one of our kids and then they can pass
it on to whoever they want to so yeah
that'd be great well I'd love to see you
guys I don't know if you could do it but
come to my full foliage Cruise love to
have you on the Run uh definitely doing
it again this October I'm flying up from
New York once again that is a hot cruise
that we do every year like I think I'm
on my 13th year with that and I've seen
I've seen their videos and it's just
breathtaking country it really is it's
really out of the one time I do like it
up in the Northeast when the fall is
around for just a few
weeks the beautiful colors yeah uh it is
a good time and it's great weather for
driving the air cool you know yeah
perfect weather yeah yeah so if you can
I people come from all over the country
they just they trailer their bug they
put it on a trailer or something or you
know and they they ship it and or they
drive it um I mean we've had a couple
come down from Canada 24 hours they
drove in a bus to and we've had people
drive up in in type twos with their
buses from Florida so um yeah it's it's
awesome it's a nice following and and I
I really haven't changed the route I
people asked me you know some of the
guys who want to come back on the cruise
they like hey why don't you change the
route I'm like I'd like to but um
there's people that have never been on
it and theyve seen the videos and they
want to travel that route right uh so I
just kind of keep it that way and it
it's kind of I ironed it out where we
bypass a lot of the troubling stops that
you might you know come across when when
you're driving these long cruises you
know with lights and things and losing
people so you know over the years we've
kept most most of the time people have
been staying together so it's a good
route but that makes a difference I know
when we've tried to Caravan with people
if you get more than about 10 cars it's
impossible you had stop
separated all that kind but yeah I mean
if the Wrath that you got Works stick
with it so two years ago we had I don't
know 72 or 73 cars show up wow and it
was a whole train man to see these cars
going up the road I mean uh and for the
most part we stayed
together so you know as long as uh
people keep up I mean some people start
sightseeing and they're looking off to
the side and they're losing their place
in line but um
yeah yeah so well listen guys it was
great having you on the podcast uh love
you Carr gertude is awesome it's in a
great family and uh keep the dream alive
and keep passing down the message to the
youngsters and uh that's what's going to
keep this hobby going yep thanks again
for having us I'm glad we finally got
this going after a year so it's been
fantastic so yeah I appreciate it guys
thanks so much bye thanks bye
