Californians know the San Andreas fault
as a legendary crack in the earth that
keeps everyone on their toes this famous
fault is notorious for causing some of
the biggest earthquakes in the state and
it may have caused some more a rather
fascinating and eventful night took
place recently in California where San
Andrea's fault reminded us of its
incredible power we're going to talk
about three notable Earth movements that
happened near California's famous and
very active geological feature the San
Andreas fall stay tuned as we discuss
more about this incredible natural event
the first Tremor look trigger egg ping
as close just as many of us were winding
down our day at exactly 8:46 p.m. the
first Earth Tremor was detected this
Tremor occurred right along the San
Andrea fault near a small community
called Kinga in Fresno County imagine a
tiny shake that starts deep underground
this one happened about 8.5 km or 5.2 Mi
beneath the surface the United States
Geological Survey USGS our go-to source
for tracking such events reported that
this Tremor had a magnitude of 2.7
interestingly no one actually felt this
movement this might seem surprising but
Quakes of this magnitude often go
unnoticed especially when they happen at
such depths so while the ground did move
it did so quietly without causing any
commotion above ground the second
trimmer a slight Shake in the East Bay
next up it's fast forward to 929 9: p.m.
just a little under an hour later this
time the Tremor was detected southeast
of Mount Diablo nestled between the
towns of Danville and Brentwood in the
East Bank this Tremor was a bit stronger
registering a magnitude of 3.0 and it
occurred even deeper underground at a
depth of 17.9 km or 11.2 Mi now here's
where things get a bit more interesting
about 55 people reported feeling this
one even though it wasn't directly along
the San Andreas Fault in fact it was
about 60 m to the East the Tremor was
strong enough to be felt by residents
imagine a gentle but noticeable shake
like when a heavy truck drives by your
house the third Tremor quiet night and
Willets the final Tremor of the night
occurred at 10:13 p.m. along
California's North Coast near a
community called willens this one was
the smallest of the three with a
magnitude of 2.6 and it happened at a
depth of 8.9 km for 5.5 mil much like
the first Tremor near Kinga this one
also went unfelt by the local residents
what's interesting here is that the
epicenter of this trimor was over 35 M
away from the San Andreas fault this
shows that even areas not directly on
the fall can experience Earth movements
these small Quakes are part of a complex
web of geological activity that happens
beneath our feet every day understanding
the San Andreas fault California's
famous fault line hey there let's take a
journey into one of California's most
famous and fascinating natural features
the San Andreas fa picture this a giant
invisible crack running through the
ground stretching about 800 mil from the
southern end of the state all the way up
to Northern California this is the San
Andreas fault and it's a crucial part of
what makes California's landscape so
unique if you're liking this video so
far don't forget to like And subscribe
to the channel the San Andreas fault so
what exactly is the San Andreas fault
imagine the Earth's crust as a massive
jigsaw puzzle made up of enormous pieces
called tonic plates these plates are
constantly on the Move although they
move very slowly the San Andreas fault
is the boundary where two of these
plates meet the Pacific Plate and the
North American Plate the Pacific Plate
is slowly moving Northwest while the
North American Plate is moving Southeast
now because these plates are trying to
move in different directions they don't
always Glide smoothly past each other
instead they get stuck and build up
pressure over time when this pressure is
eventually released it causes the ground
to shift
look at the fault's path the San Andreas
fault starts down near the sutan sea in
Southern California moves through the
San Bernardino Mountains and runs close
to big cities like Los Angeles and San
Francisco it then continues up the coast
towards Cape mesino in Northern
California this long winding path makes
the fault a significant feature in
California's geography why is the San
Andreas fault important the San Andreas
fault is a key player in shaping
California's landscape the movement
along the fault has created mountain
ranges valleys and other geological
features over millions of years for
instance the stunning San Gabriel
mountains near Los Angeles and the
Beautiful San Francisco Bay are products
of the faults activity this fault is
also essential for scientists studying
the Earth by monitoring the fault
scientists can learn a lot about how the
Earth's crust moves and behaves this
knowledge helps us understand more about
the planet we live on and can guide us
in making buildings and infrastructure
safer in areas prone to ground movements
living with the San Andreas fault for
those of us who call California home the
San Andreas fault is just part of life
while it's famous for its potential to
cause ground movements it's also a
reminder of the incredible natural
processes that shape our world
Californians often talk about being
earthquake ready which means knowing
what to do if the ground starts to shake
this includes having emergency kits
securing heavy furniture and practicing
safety drills other recent earthquakes
in the United States let's take a quick
tour of other recent Earth Tremors that
have been felt across the United States
in 20124 but outside of California it's
always interesting to see how the Earth
moves in different places and each
Tremor has its own story to tell first
let's head to Alaska where a notable
Tremor occurred in the Bearing Sea on
the morning morning of Tuesday July 16th
2024 at 10:51 a.m. local time this one
had a magnitude of 4.5 and was felt by
many residents in the area people
reported a gentle shaking like a big
truck passing by these tremors are quite
common in Alaska due to its location
along the boundary of the Pacific and
North American plates similar to
California's San Andreas fall next we
move to the Midwest specifically to
Oklahoma in mid April a Tremor with a
MAG magnitude of 3.8 was detected near
the town of Stillwater many residents
felt a short but noticeable jolt
Oklahoma has seen an increase in these
Earth movements over the past decade
partly due to Natural geological
processes and partly due to human
activities like oil and gas extraction
now let's travel to the east coast in
May a smaller trimor was recorded in
Virginia near the town of mineral this
one had a magnitude of 2.9 and was felt
by some locals as a brief gentle Shake
Virginia experienced a larger event back
in 2011 so even these smaller Tremors
can bring back memories and remind folks
of The Importance of Being prepared
lastly in the Pacific Northwest a Tremor
with a magnitude of 3.6 was recorded in
June near the town of Olympia Washington
people in the area felt a light shaking
similar to a heavy truck rumbling by the
Pacific Northwest is another region with
active geological features making the
these Earth movements a fairly regular
occurrence let us know your thoughts
