In the vast expanse of the Galactic Core lay a secluded group,
home to a unique strain of humanity known as the Kin.
Once scornfully dubbed Squats by the Imperium,
these diminutive beings possessed an unyielding spirit and ferocious loyalty.
Shielded by their distance from humanity,
they remained largely untouched by the cataclysms that befell their brethren.
Through the eons, they danced on the fringes of annihilation,
deftly sidestepping the wrath of the Men of Iron
and weathering the tempestuous storms of the Age of Strife.
It wasn't until the Great Crusade that the tendrils of human contact
snaked their way back to the Kin's doorstep.
Yet by then, the chasm of isolation had carved deep furrows in their genetic structure.
Isolation had become their advantage, birthing great civilizations and empires.
The Kin exploited the rich resources of the Galactic Core
using the materials to build and innovate.
Their cities descended into the depths of planets in defiance of gravity,
reaching towards the abyss with silent determination.
Ships of obsidian and steel pierced the void of space, a symbol to their fiery will.
Each creation was a testament to the Kin's adaptation.
However, long before this great empire,
the Kin's lineage traced back to the humble origins of human pioneers from pre-Imperial Terra.
Sent forth from the resource-exhausted Earth,
they embarked on a perilous odyssey, seeking the bounty hidden amidst the stars.
Their journey unfurled across the unfathomable expanse of the galaxy,
guided by the flickering promise of untold riches.
Through the ink-black abyss, they stumbled upon the Galactic Core,
a desolate and inhospitable realm, its planetary bodies barren and forsaken,
yet pregnant with the allure of precious minerals and ores.
A majority of these settlers were hardy frontier miners
who dreamt of reaping the riches and returning to Earth.
But alas, the exploratory fleets that ventured into the abyss
never returned to the cradle of humanity.
It is still uncertain the reasoning why,
with the truth being obscured by the passage of time.
Even the Kin, heirs to this ancestral legacy,
find themselves ensnared in the mystery of their forebear's fate.
Yet amidst the shroud of uncertainty,
one truth remains steadfast.
The resilience of the Kin,
born upon the shoulders of innovation and ingenuity.
For it was through the artifice of cloneskines
that their ancestors forged a path to survival.
Cloneskines refer to stable mutations utilized by the Kin,
an artifact of ancient genetic tinkering conducted by the first ancestors.
These gene pools were meticulously crafted
and gave rise to the genetic structure of Kin we know today.
Although they are all clones,
no two are identical,
each bearing the mark of its unique lineage
due to the deep and varied bloodlines.
Born of this embrace,
their bones are as dense as forged steel
and their muscles coiled with more strength
than their human counterparts.
They are shorter and stockier
and can live three times longer than their human ancestors.
And yet, the cloneskines are more than mere vessels of strength.
They bestow other gifts upon their progeny
enhanced reactions,
vision that pierces the veil of night
and resistance to the elements such as radiation and gravity
that would shatter lesser beings.
Beyond the tangible,
the cloneskines were resistant to psychic forces.
Within their design,
their psychic potential burned dimmer than other races
such as humans due to their engineered souls,
thus shielding them from the call of chaos.
It was rare for the Kin to fall victim to mutation,
possession or the temptation of the warp.
The ability of the early human settlers
to develop the cloneskines
could be attributed to the Votan ancestor cores.
Crafted by the hands of the Imperium long ago,
these supercomputers were born to be used
on the mining fleets exploring the galactic core.
Within their vast circuitry
was a deposit of knowledge from the dark age of technology.
Weapon blueprints,
genealogical data
and even standard template constructs
were just some of the treasures offered by the cores.
These highly advanced artificial intelligences
were able to provide counsel and guidance
for the Kin to survive the harsh environments
and eventually build a space-faring empire.
Today, the ancestor cores are the heart of their culture,
revered as deities,
drawing devotion akin to fervent worship.
They, the Kin,
guardians sworn to protect these sacred relics,
pledged even their very life in defense of their sanctity.
Veiled beneath layers of secrecy,
these artificial intelligent computers remained concealed
and the truth hidden from outsiders,
including the Imperium.
To unveil the essence of the ancestor cores
would be to court chaos,
inviting the storm of conflict
to shatter the tranquil peace across the galaxy.
In the eyes of the Imperium,
the revelation of such technological marvels
would be a threat against the natural order,
branded as techno-heresy.
The Mechanicus,
with their voracious hunger for innovation,
would march to the beat of war drums,
seeking to claim the artifacts
for their own inscrutable designs.
However,
age has started to wear upon these great wonders.
Millennia of ceaseless toil
have chiseled quirks into their once pristine surfaces.
Designed without foresight,
the weight of eons now bears down
upon their mechanical circuitry,
causing fractures in their once seamless function.
Creators, in their arrogance,
never foresaw the toll of endless labor upon their creation.
Even the most formidable computers
find themselves eventually shackled
by the limits of memory.
Idiosyncrasies began to emerge,
each core bearing its own peculiar mark,
a semblance of what could be called a personality.
Once,
the leagues would seek answers
and receive them in the blink of an eye.
Now the ancestor cores labor over solutions
which may take decades to produce.
The Votan ancestor cores also created the Ironkin,
a race of sentient robots.
Unlike their predecessors,
the Men of Iron,
who rose in rebellion against their creators,
the Ironkin chose a different path.
They remained steadfast allies
to their flesh and blood brethren.
Integrated seamlessly into the fabric of their society,
the Ironkin stood equal with their kinfolk,
regardless of the material of their being.
Whether one is made from flesh or metal,
kin is kin.
In fact,
the kinfolk will go to great lengths
to save an Ironkin member who is in peril.
Designed with purpose,
each Ironkin's form bespoke a role in kin society.
Miners delving into the earth's depths,
cargo carriers bearing burdens of the collective,
pilots soaring through the skies,
troopers braving the front line,
or wayfinders guiding them through the warp.
The Ironkin wove their existence around the squats,
their purpose clear.
However,
they were not shackled by chains of servitude,
nor diminished in stature.
For within their mechanical hearts,
a yearning to help their kinfolk burn brightly.
In ancient days,
kin gathered together,
bound by ties of blood and shared history,
forming groups known as kindred.
Within the sheltering walls of Holds,
they found refuge,
where the echoes of their ancestors
whispered secrets of survival and strength.
In turn,
kindreds pledged their fealty to a league
that makes up the leagues of Wotan.
These leagues,
vast and sprawling,
held within them the essence of over a dozen kindred,
each a piece of a greater whole.
At the core of each league
lay the beating heart of their legacy.
The Wotan ancestor core,
a relic of power and reverence.
The formation of leagues was not mere happenstance.
Many of the first leagues emerged as alliances born of necessity,
forged in the fires of conflict
to safeguard the sanctity of the ancestor cores.
Each league possesses sole claim
to the ancient heraldic colors
and logos of one of the ancient mining fleets.
Every kindred is entitled to display these schemes and sigils
in whatever fashion they see fit.
Over time,
the territories of each league have become relatively set,
while prevailing cultures,
specialties,
and outlooks
have come to prominence within their membership.
While uncommon,
it is not unheard of for kindreds to leave one league for another.
Ten millennia have passed
since the Kin first forged their fortresses
amidst the cosmic expanse of the galactic core.
They were content to remain largely within the bounds of this strange region.
But some Kin dared to defy the confines of their sanctuary
and ventured into the unknown embrace of the greater galaxy.
They formed exploratory groups known as Prospector Fleets,
carrying the adventurous souls of the Kin far and wide.
These fleets have since been embroiled in interstellar conflicts
amidst the chaos of foreign lands.
They returned,
not as conquerors,
but as merchants of wisdom
bearing the scars of battles fought
and tales spun under alien stars.
They encountered various Xenos factions
and wove webs of trade and diplomacy.
As such,
the Leagues of Votan maintain somewhat friendly relations with other species,
including the Eldar and the Tau Empire.
Despite the Leagues of Votan having interacted with all the significant races across the galaxy,
some of these encounters have been constrained to a single fleet,
altercation,
or trade pact.
The Kin maintain a secretive stance towards outsiders
and are hesitant to disclose the full scope of their civilization within the galactic core,
fearing it may jeopardize their survival.
Consequently,
numerous entities in the wider galaxy
have erroneously viewed these fleets as representing the entirety of their species,
thus trivializing them as a minor alien civilization.
The Kin have been continuously misidentified by humans,
Tau,
and Eldar alike.
They take extra precautions to conceal their ties to ancient humanity on Terra,
fearing the Imperium might assert dominance over them.
Historically,
the Imperium has been more of a foe than an ally.
The Inquisition and fervent space marines
are swift to label the Kin as Xenos,
advocating for their extermination.
Conversely,
the Kin harbor disdain for the superstitious ideologies of the Imperium,
particularly directed at the Adeptus Mechanicus.
They view the Mechanicum's voracious ignorance as particularly perilous
and are instructed to swiftly neutralize them when necessary.
Throughout their long history,
the Leagues of Votan were embroiled in ceaseless conflict.
Wars,
numerous as stars,
painted their history in shades of blood and valor.
Amongst their adversaries,
the Orcs stood tall,
their shadows casting darkness over the land.
A visceral hatred brewed between them,
an ancient feud echoing through generations.
And then,
there were the Tiaranids,
a terror incarnate.
They slithered through nightmares,
leaving trails of dread in their wake.
To the Leagues of Votan,
they were not mere foes,
but manifestations of primal fear,
worthy of both respect and dread.
However,
this has not prevented some Kindreds
from actively stalking Tiaranid's fleets
and striking isolated hive ships
to harvest their resources.
More recently,
a sudden eruption of new warp storms materialized,
consuming entire star systems in their malevolent embrace.
Swirling vortexes of unreality
swallowed up once-thriving holds,
leaving behind nothing but desolation.
Trade routes,
lifelines of commerce and communication,
were mercilessly severed by the relentless advance of the Stormbelt.
Like giant cosmic scissors,
they sliced through the fabric of the galaxy,
leaving isolated pockets of desperation in their wake.
Amidst the turmoil,
the Kin found themselves beset
not only by the malevolent forces of Chaos,
but also by insidious Xenos adversaries.
The Great Rift,
a tear in the very fabric of reality,
acted as a cosmic catapult,
hurling unsuspecting travelers across the stars.
Humans, Eldar and Tau,
disparate interlopers from distant corners of the galaxy,
found themselves thrust into the heart of the galactic core,
disoriented and displaced.
For the leagues of Votan,
this influx of outsiders represented an unprecedented challenge.
Never before had their domain been so infiltrated by so many outsiders,
their sovereignty threatened by the vagaries of cosmic upheaval.
