Recently, my American friend sent me a video about this art exhibition that was in Boston.
Oh my god, look at this guy delivering food.
He said it's really popular in America and he wanted to know more about it.
Right now, it's in Nanjing, only about one hour away from me.
I'm gonna go and check it out for myself.
Good morning everybody and welcome to Nanjing.
I'm very happy to be back in this city and I've got a full day of fantastic activities planned.
I'm on my way to the first one now, so come with me and let's explore Nanjing.
Wow, look at this mall.
It's like eight floors and we're going to the very, very top.
And here we are, ARRIVE Deji Art Museum.
This is where the exhibition An Era in Jingling is.
Wow, and as soon as we enter, there are hundreds of models of the figures in the paintings.
This is so cool.
I like this stuff.
Okay, so we hit rent, a little coat and here we have our smartband.
Okay, so we put this on and basically it's like some sort of special awareness
that they know where you are in the exhibition and wait to see this.
This is super cool.
Wow.
An Era in Jingling uses digital technology to bring to life a famous Chinese painting
which shows the environment and social history of Nanjing during the Song Dynasty.
After choosing a character, you're placed into the bustling streets of Nanjing 1,000 years ago.
So this is me, the purple guy.
I just chose him as my avatar and you can see he moves.
If I walk this way, he will follow me.
This is so cool.
I've never seen anything like this before.
It's like a proper game.
It's like you're in the painting.
Ridiculous.
You know, it's not a video.
It's not a video that just repeats in place.
These are like programmed characters.
Whenever I walk past, they interact with you.
You can buy things.
I just bought some fireworks and now my guy is shooting off fireworks.
And what's really interesting is you can just watch the screen and see what's happening.
It's like a look into the daily life of people from thousands of years ago.
Can you see this guy?
He is sweeping the roads.
Because these days, you see a lot of people cleaning the roads in the morning
to make sure everything looks good and is very clean.
In the Song Dynasty, that was a very advanced sort of thing,
kind of taking care of the city and making sure it's clean.
So very forward-thinking, the Song Dynasty.
Here we have somebody doing a show.
Lots of people around enjoying the show.
This guy is bringing the tea around to people who would like to buy.
Food delivery was even around in China in the Song Dynasty.
And up here, you can actually see someone taking people along the river.
This is a tourist boat.
These guys have paid to take a little trip around Qinghuai River.
So this screen bends around three sides here.
It is 110 meters long.
The quality, you know, it's difficult to video screens on cameras.
You always kind of get that fuzzy effect and sometimes you see the lines.
But through my eyes, in real life, if you come here and see it, it looks perfect.
It's really, really good quality.
And just as you're coming to the end of the screen through the exit through this door,
they have a replica of one of the paintings.
And when you look at it, you can just see how amazingly close that the screen has been.
Qinghuai River, the tourist boats.
I think this will be the new way that art is enjoyed by younger people, this new generation.
If we came to just see this picture, you would look at it.
You'd say, wow, it's really nice.
Wow, look what people did in those days.
And after maybe five, ten minutes, that would be it.
And you'd forget about it.
But this experience is totally different.
You learn as you walk at your own pace.
You're able to see how the life was in those days.
And it just feels much more rich, much more involved.
It's like you're actually there.
It's a really weird feeling.
I've never felt this way after being at any sort of art museum or exhibition.
But yeah, I will remember this for a long time.
Incredible.
Guys, if you come to Nanjing, definitely spend a couple hours here in the Deji Museum,
checking out An Era in Jingling.
100% worth it.
Now, we started the morning with some ancient Nanjing.
Let's go and see what Nanjing is like now.
And after seeing some duck, I'm very excited for some roast duck in Nanjing.
Just walking down the street.
There we go.
There's the painting, An Era in Jingling.
And here we have arrived at this duck restaurant.
There's quite a big queue.
And if you see a queue outside a restaurant in China,
you know that it's very, very good.
It's worth waiting for.
So, of course, I ordered Yashui Fenshitang,
the very famous duck blood soup noodles here in Nanjing.
You've got lots of duck meat in here.
You've got some duck blood.
You have little tofu, some noodles.
This is really good.
This is like crispy, almost like a pancake.
And yeah, some vegetables and really nice hot soup on a chilly day like today.
And here we also have some Yanshui Ya.
It's like saltwater duck.
I've never tried this before.
I like that.
It's like salty.
I like salty food.
Very tasty.
And of course, we also have some Kaoya.
And here, Kaoya.
That is delicious.
Very tasty.
Do not bother going to Beijing to get roast duck.
Just come to Nanjing.
It's much better.
That's really good.
And there we go.
Very tasty restaurant.
The queue is still going.
Wow, it's got even bigger.
You can see why there's a queue.
Very good.
What should we do?
Let's go.
Let's go and see the wall.
Let's head towards the wall and then we can figure out what's going on.
And here we are on top of the Nanjing city walls.
And you've got a really good view of the whole city.
And out this way, you can see all of the high buildings
and the city center, the financial district.
Nice city.
Nanjing feels like really modern.
Keeps its ancient things, you know.
It doesn't knock down the wall and build a motorway.
The wall's still here and you can see people enjoy it.
It seems like Nanjing people are very proud of their history, you know.
Proud of, you know, what an important city it has been for China.
For such a long time.
And of course, earlier this morning,
we saw how important the wall was during the Song dynasty.
And still now.
And from the city wall, we can see Fuzhou Miao area.
So we're going to head there now.
There's so much about.
Lots of different types of food.
Lots of roast duck.
Just these roast duck.
It looks like the painting.
And here in Jilin, look.
Wow, there's literally ducks everywhere.
It is true.
No ducks ever fly out of Nanjing.
But look at these decorations across the bridge.
Beautiful.
It's starting to get dark here.
And later I'm going to head out on the river, on the Qinghuai River.
To experience the light show.
Apparently they've got a great light show.
So Qinghuai River is actually known as Nanjing's mother river.
And it curves through the heart of the ancient Chinese city.
And it offers the best vantage point to soak up Nanjing's historical landmarks.
Especially at night.
Right now with the lantern festival going on.
Wow, look at all these.
Very impressive.
From here you get the best views of all the traditional painted houses.
Grand homes once occupied by the nobility.
And many colourful barges as they float past full of tourists.
But of course these tourism boats aren't anything new.
Song dynasty were doing it.
Starting our journey at an era in Jingling exhibition at Deji Art Museum.
Was a fantastic choice.
It gave us a great gateway.
Into the deep roots of the city.
As we move through the bustling streets of Nanjing.
It became more and more clear.
How the lives of modern Chinese people.
Still echo the philosophies, traditions and daily rhythm.
Of those in the Song dynasty.
Nanjing proves that even though centuries may pass.
The heart of a culture can remain unchanged.
I hope you enjoyed this journey through Nanjing.
A city that not only remembers its past.
But lives it every single day.
See you guys the next one.
Bye-bye.
