Last week on Kauai we completed our first overnight sail.
Jase hooked his first yellowfin tuna and we are treated to a magical dolphin show.
This week we start to explore some Croatian islands, continue sailing north with short
sails between several islands and we enjoy some favorable winds before stumbling across
a wine region and sampling its fruits. Well it's just a perfect morning it's our
first morning in Croatia. We're just having a coffee on the side of the boat and just
taking in the beautiful day and it's just an exciting time. We've got our friends and family
coming over in the next couple of months and hills of Montenegro over there where we've been
before and we've climbed and it just brings back some really cool memories and I know that we're
making more right now so it's just yeah loving it. Jase is going on a serious mission to
tie us up to the shore. I didn't think it would be this difficult but he seems to have had to
scale a few cliff faces, he's into the water. Finally getting tied off it was time to explore.
We had chosen Lopud, one of the Elafiti islands due to its proximity to Dubrovnik.
A short six nautical mile trip with two good anchorages at opposite ends of the island.
The island can only be reached by boat with no cars only buggies which ferry day tourists between
both sides of the island. After three days on the boat we were pretty keen to stretch the legs
and fortunately we found a path that took us most of the way around the island.
There's a little kawaii down there for a run. Yeah it's pretty beautiful we're running around
the island and there's water on both sides. Like a summer's day. We're off we're out of Lopud.
Finally after our second attempt so we've seen both the southern and northern anchorages are both
really good. The northern one that we're leaving now had a bit more life going on, a few more
restaurants, a lot of ferries coming and going but yeah it was really good. Lopud, see you later.
Yeah we're first sail in Croatia and loving it. Getting some good winds.
It's flying about 15. We've got all the sails out and we're hooning up the outside of
Miljet and yeah hopefully the Croatian sailing conditions keep like this.
Skip what's going on we're going away from land. Yes we're having to tack now the winds have
changed we were flying right up the side going seven to eight knots we even got up to 8.9 and
now five minutes later the winds have dropped and changed direction so we're tacking our way up
and we're going a bit slower. Yeah we're going a fair bit slow.
The winds are back and we're flying again still away we're still tacking though.
Yeah good fun better than motoring. Yes it is.
We tacked up the coast of Miljet for a couple of hours before reaching our destination.
We spent one night in this anchorage in Miljet. It didn't cost us anything it's right near the
national park and it was pretty well protected.
Very nice. You look all a bit relaxed there. Just trying to get a bit of leg tan going on.
Oh yes. We're very relaxed. We're leaving our anchorage
over there for one night. And where was that? Let's hear this excellent pronunciation. Miljet.
It's got a national park. We will revisit the national park on the way back down but
yeah some bad weather coming so we're just cruising towards Kutula and we're just going
to get a slightly more protected anchorage for the coming days. We anchored in a small bay Yubala
Reshis south of Kutula town. It was quiet and close to the wine region of Lombarda. Perfect
for a two-night stay before the winds changed. Lombarda is a small village on the eastern tip
of the island six kilometers from the town of Kutula. It is famous for its white wine
Goek. People believe the grape type arrived in the 5th century BC during the Greek colonization of
the Adriatic. This is why people believe it is called Goek which can be translated to Greek
or bitter. It was easy to enjoy an afternoon spent wandering between the perfectly manicured wineries
with green hills by the sea. Where are we off to? We're off to some wineries apparently. Yeah
we're in Lombarda which is a wine region on Kutula. So yeah doing a bit of wine tasting and
yeah let's get there. We're booked in for two o'clock. Boy i'm getting wet.
Whoops. You just did that on purpose. Let's go. Always saw lots of people in Croatia selling
wild asparagus on the side of the road. Apparently it grows everywhere but we've
never actually seen it in the wild until now. There it is. Growing wild and free. That's the
plant apparently. It's the name of the grapes. The grape and of the wine.
We have a big winery of Goek and it is separated in pieces owned by many different families
and these golden pieces are places where we have our wineries. 14.6.
It is a little bit more i would say complex more serious wine. The first one is fresh.
We just purchased a wine which is unique to Lombarda. Fun. Yeah and good season but
that's where you want free tastings. Yes. Well that makes you want to buy a bottle.
The experience was really cool and they opened up the winery just for us so we
not only did we have a good experience but we wanted to support the
winery and we had a lot of fun so yeah we're just enjoying a nice white.
Well we've left again. We are cruising past Orovik just over there and some huge mountains.
So Orovik on the right and Kutula on the left and there's a nice big passage up between the
two big mountains so yeah we're just cruising down going about three knots. There's not much wind yet
it's only seven knots of true wind speed but it's meant to pick up probably from now on so
yeah we should get some good wind all afternoon on our way to uh where are we going?
Shedro. Shedro. The channel between Kutula and Peljusas is a mecca for kite surfing and wind
surfing. As we sailed up the narrow channel it was fun watching these guys use the wind like us.
They had so much control and maneuvered around Kauai like she wasn't there.
As we exited the channel we finally got our wind. A consistent 15 knots from behind
which allowed for a cruisy downward sail with just the headsail out averaging six knots.
