East Meets West Using Chinese watercolor to paint a western subject
Hi everyone, I'm Kate. Welcome back to my channel.
In this video, I'm going to start a new subject and a completely new way of painting Chinese watercolor.
Let's get started.
I'll start with the eyes using ink.
For dark color, you have to make sure that there isn't much water in your brush.
Otherwise, the eyes will look murky.
One thing I have to make it upfront is that I haven't learned how to paint dogs or any type of animals.
And this is my new way of painting a dog portrait using Chinese watercolor.
And I wanted to make it look more Western.
I've received comments from time to time that I've made Chinese painting look easy and it isn't.
Well, I've been painting with Chinese brushes for a long period of time, even though I don't paint every day.
Every person is different.
You may have better artistic skills or spatial intelligence than I am.
So I'm showing you how I paint.
Perhaps you can do it right away or even better.
You never know.
The key feature of the pug is the extensive wrinkles on his forehead and around the muscle.
I'm mixing a bright color using orange color and ink to paint or outline these lines.
And now I'm painting the nose and muscle area.
The essence of freehand or freestyle Chinese painting is the simplicity.
So I'm trying my best to use very simple stroke and few colors to create the painting.
Now I'm using the large brush to make some brown tone color to paint the autumn leaves.
The color is very light, so you just use more water in your mix.
After painting some leaves in different shades, I'm now mixing some brown and greenish color
and make use of the same brush to paint the background.
This is the main difference between Chinese watercolor and Western watercolor.
Because for Western watercolor, you will have to paint the background first and then the foreground later
because the foreground will be covering the background.
And for Chinese painting, it is the other way around.
You cannot cover the first layer with the second layer, particularly if you are painting it with a lighter tone.
There are a lot of different things that you can consider painting once you master all the skills.
Thank you for watching.
