so this is going to be a little bit
difficult for us to document because I
want to tell the life of the gentleman
that built this cabin
without giving out the location
gonna be um
such an interesting story wow
so
I'm going to call the gentleman
Mr J
and he was born in 1899.
and he was a World War One veteran
and he came out here to the desert in
the 1920s
now two things about Mr J is
when he joined the army he was
um in the medical Corps but he was also
taught other soldiers about ammunition
so he was an explosive expert which
helped later in his life because of all
the mining claims he did yeah
no this is um
it is an incredible story and this is
just like
walking into somebody's home this has
been cared for incredibly well
and the family doesn't want this place
to be shared because they have
incredible memories here the daughter
grew up here yeah so so Mr Jay had two
children
um he was married in the 1940s
and lived here on and off
with his two kids
and his wife
then they did move away for a while but
he used to come back
at the weekends to maintain the cabin
and also all of his mining claims do you
know he had over 56 mining claims in the
area wow
I just
I'm almost speechless it's
this is probably the most incredible
cabin we've ever come across
well he retired in 1964 and then came
here for the last 20 years of his life
or 19 years of his life
he did become ill
in 1983 and went to live with his
daughter in LA
and then passed away in 1984.
so this now is a volunteer cabin and
people can come up and stay but they
have had some issues with vandals those
damned Hooligans
who decided to start pulling the wood
off the essays office and using it as
firewood
which is another reason why they don't
want us to give out the location
it's such a shame because Mr J has got
such an interesting story I could go on
and on and on about the minds what he
did for veterans
um his two children
but unfortunately if I say too much
people will figure it out
so can you imagine living out here for
the best part of 50 years
yeah I mean that's
and hand building this cabin
now one thing about Mr J is apparently
he had a pet Badger for several years
that lived under this cabin
true story
right inside the uh assay office now
see some bottles that people have found
a place in here and then uh
next door would have been his Powder
Room
there you have it
now one of the memories his daughter has
living here as a child growing up she
did say that the only time she ever was
a little bit scared was having to go to
the Loo in the middle of the night this
is how she would have to walk down
and keep in mind it is a
extremely dark out in the desert when
there's no moon
or anything so
could be quite treacherous
and of course
no trip would be complete
without a trip to the low
Outhouse rules always keep the door
closed leave enough paper for the next
Miner please close the lid leave it
clean please put a little lime down the
hole but be careful it burns skin so
avoid getting any on the seat
so this is Mr Jay's
final resting place
1899-1984.
father and friend
well I can say honestly
Jay was the absolute definition of a
true American
yeah he's a veteran was a hard worker
took care of his family
unless it left a lasting impression so
it's very honorable
and what a well perfect place for his
final resting place absolutely in the
land that he loved a far cry from
Oklahoma which is where he was born
and I guess these other Graves this one
I can't read
says something 1909 yeah
and this lady here was a friend of Mr
Jay's
cute little graveyard
and I take it these two
must have just had their ashes seen as
they've got very tiny Graves yep
and this one doesn't say anything
