Hey, I'm Kate and this is a figure skating tutorial for advanced skaters.
This is for a high level skater who's passed the elements from my starter,
beginner, and intermediate videos. Elements I've grouped in this level will
be performed and explained in order to allow you to identify the moves and even
try them yourself. The moves in this level are the flip,
lutz, loop, camel spin, and the layback spin. First we're going to do the flip and
the lutz. There are half versions of both of these
toe jumps and I taught them in my intermediate 2 video.
I jump and spin counterclockwise and therefore will demonstrate
jumps and spins counterclockwise. Here's the flip.
You can begin the flip with a left forward outside three turn with a little
toe tap. The flip takes off with a left back
inside edge. To do the flip, begin by getting some
speed. I do some backwards clockwise
crossovers and a step forward and cross before beginning the jump.
Then to be able to do the flip, do a left forward outside three turn with the toe
tap at the start. Once you're backwards, your right foot
will extend behind you and into the ice. To take off, push up using both legs and
ultimately using the toe of your right foot.
During the jump, your left foot should be crossed over your right at about the
angles and once you've rotated 360 degrees and are backwards again, land on
your right foot and extend your left leg behind you.
For your arms, they can begin with left in front and right to the side at about
one and three until the toe pick goes in the ice and
you jump. This is when arms come together and up
and once you land, they open out again as shown.
And here's the flip one more time. Now for the lutz. This jump takes off
backwards on the left outside edge with the right toe assisting it. You can
begin with clockwise crossovers on a slight curve and arms hugging the
curve. You then pick up the right foot as the
arms move to one and three. Next, extend the right foot behind as the
arms move more to the right and your body winds up preparing for the jump.
Then the right toe pick goes into the ice extended far behind your body into
the left of your left foot. You launch yourself into the air with
feet crossed at ankles and arms up and in.
You rotate 360 degrees counterclockwise in the air
and then land backwards in landing position, which as you most likely know
by now is on the right foot with arms out and extended as shown
at about 10 and 2 if they were on a clock and your left foot is extended
behind your body. And that is the lutz.
The last jump I'll be showing you is the loop. This is an edge jump and it takes
off from a right back outside edge. Two common entrances into a loop are
right forward inside three turn and crossovers. I'll show you how to do the
loop from crossovers. First, begin with some backwards
counterclockwise crossovers and arms heading the circle.
Once you have gathered enough speed, press into the ice bending your knee
with your weight on your right foot on your back outside edge
and use it to press into the ice and jump up and around rotating 360 degrees
counterclockwise with feet crossed at ankles and landing
backwards on your right foot with the left extended behind and arms
out in typical landing position. Now for the
camel spin. This is difficult but practice really
makes perfect. There are two possible entrances into a
camel either from a three turn or from crossovers.
I'll be demonstrating from a three turn. So you begin with a right forward inside
three turn. It's important that after the turn your
left arm is in front of you because once you step onto your left foot
your left arm needs to push out from your body and all the way to your left
side. At the same time when you step onto your
spinning foot you need to bend over at the waist and lift your free leg
straight and high behind you in a basic spiral position.
Additionally when performing a camel spin you must keep your weight on the
front half of your blade and your body over it.
Once you've made some rotations allow your body to straighten and your foot to
drop and to go into a one foot spin before exiting your spin on a right back
outside edge. And here's a camel spin one more time.
Now for the last move, the layback spin. As with other spins there are two
possible entrances into a layback spin. It's either from back crossovers or from
a three turn. I'll be demonstrating from the inside
three turn. Two helpful tips while performing a
layback are to really push your hips forward like this
and remember to let your head drop back. So we'll now begin with the right
forward inside three turn. You then step onto your left foot and
begin a one foot spin with the arms coming up and in however you like.
At the same time you need to push your hips forward and let your upper body
drop back. Also at the same time when you step into
your spin your right leg which is lifted into the
air starts to come forward. It'll come about halfway to the front of
the body but then as you spin you'll spin away from your leg letting it go
behind your body and holding it up in the air
bent and angled with pinky toe side up. Once you've completed some rotations you
can bring yourself into an upright spin position before exiting the spin.
Well those are all the advanced moves I have to show you but as this is the last
of my videos I just want to make sure you know that
there are many other skating elements. Things like the axle, double jumps,
combination jumps and spins, brackets, rockers, flying spins and much
more. Anyway thanks for watching and I hope
this video helped you.
