The otter parents look for their lost pup!
Beau is struggling to assert himself at mealtimes.
Our main concerns is that he's obviously not as boisterous
and he's not as forceful,
and he's more likely to get pushed off the food
when they're feeding from mum.
It's a little bit of a concern cos Annie's only got four teats
and there's five of them to feed,
so hopefully that little pup is still getting enough food.
Right, guys. Oi!
It's lunchtime and the otter pups are moving onto solid food
for the first time.
Hi. You hungry?
There's plenty of fish for everyone,
but little Beau is continuing to go hungry.
The pups are very naughty and they will take each other's fish.
And they definitely have the upper hand over Beau.
The otter pups are 14 weeks old
and the runt of the litter, Beau,
is still struggling to keep up with his siblings.
Otters are unable to swim when they're born
and need to learn from their parents.
Today, Dad Wallace is taking the pups for their first lesson.
It's so important that these little pups learn to swim.
It's one of the major life lessons for that species.
Wallace has taken swimming training.
Initially, he's led them into the shallower end of the pool
and, you know, he'll wait and he'll watch them
and see their confidence build.
With Dad's help, most of the pups are swimming in no time.
But Beau isn't keen to get his paws wet.
Beau is probably a little more timid around the water.
He's hanging back a little bit.
It's really important that Beau keeps up with his brothers and sisters
and learns these skills as well.
It's definitely a case of don't fall behind
because it's potentially life-threatening to do that.
It's late afternoon.
Annie is relaxing with one of her favourite stones
and with swimming lessons over,
Wallace has returned to the halt with four of the pups.
But Beau has been left behind.
If an otter pup ended up alone in the wild,
there wouldn't be a lot of chance of survival, I wouldn't have thought.
There's the potential for it to get eaten.
You know, it could freeze to death if the temperatures were dropping.
Otters are quite vocal, and especially pups.
So I'm sure if the pups went missing,
the adults would search all over and find them.
30 minutes after Beau went missing,
Wallace finds him safe and well...
..and returns him to Annie and the sanctuary of the otter's den.
