Just off the coast of Southern California, near Ventura,
lies a world shrouded in mystery and wonder.
It's a place where the whispers of the ocean meet the secrets of the land.
It's often called the Galapagos of North America
and it's a remote archipelago where nature thrives in its purest form.
As the Island Packers ferry carries us across the deep blue,
we leave behind the familiar and journey into the unknown.
To islands that time has forgotten, but nature is embraced.
This is the Channel Islands National Park.
The journey begins early at Ventura Harbor.
Because we're camping tonight, we got to arrive extra early
so that we can take all of our camping gear
and make sure that it gets on the ferry
so that we can transfer it over to the national park tonight
that we're going to stay at.
Today, we're going from Ventura Harbor
and that's taking us over to Santa Cruz Island
where we're going to be at Scorpion Cove.
As we glide over the waves, leaving the mainland behind,
the boat cuts through the Pacific
and there's a sense of anticipation in the air.
A promise of adventure.
As we approach Santa Cruz Island,
it emerges from the ocean like a rugged and untouched world.
It's the largest of the Channel Islands
and it's a place where towering cliffs meet secluded coves
and the time seems to stand still.
This is Scorpion Anchorage
and it's a gateway to a wilderness unlike any other.
The island beckons with trails
that lead to some of the most breathtaking vistas imaginable.
Among them is a hike to Potato Harbor,
a journey that takes you through
the heart of Santa Cruz's rugged landscape.
Along the way, the island's unique flora and fauna
reveal themselves.
From the vibrant wildflowers that paint the hillsides
and spring to the resilient shrubs
that cling to the rocky terrain,
each step brings you closer to understanding
the island's untamed beauty.
After a steady climb, Potato Harbor,
it comes into view.
It's a secluded cove
shaped by the relentless forces of nature.
The harbor with its turquoise waters and jagged cliffs
is a sight to behold.
It's a place of solitude
where the only sounds are the whispers of the wind
and the distant crash of waves far below.
Here at the edge of the island,
the true essence of the Channel Islands is revealed.
Raw, powerful, breathtakingly beautiful.
Standing at the overlook,
the vastness of the Pacific Ocean stretches out before you
and the immensity of the island's natural beauty
takes your breath away.
This is a place to pause, to reflect,
and to simply be present in the moment.
Potato Harbor is not just a destination,
it's a reminder of the incredible forces
that have shaped these islands over millennia.
If you keep your eyes peeled for the elusive island fox,
you can find it darting through the underbrush
and the golden eagles soaring above if you're really lucky.
Both are symbols of the wild spirit of Santa Cruz.
After a day of exploration,
Scorpion Cove Gampground offers the perfect retreat.
Tucked away near the beach,
it's a perfect sanctuary where you can rest and recharge.
As dawn breaks over Santa Cruz,
the island awakens with a soft light
that touches every corner of the landscape.
But as the time comes to leave,
the memories of this place linger.
Etched in the mind like the waves on the shore,
the Channel Islands are more than just a destination.
They're a reminder of the beauty
that lies beyond the everyday,
waiting to be discovered.
And as the ferry carries you back to the mainland,
the islands remain behind.
Untouched, unspoiled, and timeless
just as the way you found it.
It's a piece of California
that will always be wild and free,
and it's just waiting for those who seek it out.
Until next time,
I'll see you again, Channel Islands National Park.
