Credit where it's due. What a save, Jon.
What's happening people? Young Philly here and as you can see I'm with Frank Lampard.
I can't lie, I do feel very nervous but just before we get started,
what is it we're actually going to be doing today?
Okay, so the first part of the session I'm going to be out wide. I'm going to take a couple of
different positions up so you're going to get a different angle on the cross to you
and then we're just going to work on your finishing. I'll maybe give you a few tips
but that was probably my game trying to arrive in a box so we'll be talking about probably
mainly one touch finishes and maybe having two touches being quick getting the shot away.
After that we're going into straight one-on-ones with the keeper.
Nice.
So I wouldn't say that was necessarily a position I always got in but I played with
some great players who were just amazing at that kind of making the right decision of when the
keeper comes out, what's your angle, do you slide it past them, do you try and make a feint to go
by them. So we'll work on that.
Nice.
I'm sure you'll be great at that.
Oh, hopefully.
And last but not least, what is the last drill?
So last drill, straight three kicks.
Oh God.
Yeah.
I'm hitting miss with them.
Everybody is.
But you know when you see the Beckham over the years doing that, that's because he's hit a
thousand and he's missed 900 but then he could go bang. So practice that.
Anyway, let's get into it.
I'll start here, drill it out to me, to my feet. I'm going to have a couple of touches,
probably end up around this area for the first one. You start to arrive, arrive, arrive,
I'll hit you around the penalty spot.
So does my run depend on how many touches you take?
I think so. I think what you've got to gauge is as I run with it, as I say, I'll be around
there but I'll drive, drive, head down, you start to move. As my head comes up, I think
that's when you step it on a bit. I'll try and find one or two touches.
Sounds good.
Now Prada Rep family, just bear in mind I am not a professional footballer, I'm a YouTuber.
Don't say that.
That's all I want to say.
Don't think it.
Okay.
Yep.
She's gone over!
That's a bit of me, it was bubbling in. It was bouncing in a little bit.
Okay.
Yes, here we go.
Yes!
Beautiful.
Get up, John! Get up! Get up!
No!
How many we going for, Gaffer?
Let's do one more.
John, this one's going in. Remember I told you.
Yes! Get in there! Yes!
It was a delivery though.
See the couple that I've bounced into?
Yeah.
The only thing is...
They're hard to read though.
They are hard to read.
The only thing is then, the minute they become a bit like that,
I would focus on nothing but body over the ball.
Body over the ball.
Don't even think I'm hitting that bottom corner, I'm trying to hit that.
It's more like I've got to just deal with the technique.
So if he's bouncing, it's more like body over.
Do you know what I mean?
The minute you kind of end up like that, they're hard.
But the minute you end up like that,
you're naturally getting your body shape over the ball.
Yeah, yeah.
And then just hitting target.
Nice.
Nice though.
I'll take two with the legend.
So as you can tell, I did struggle a little bit.
So now Frank is going to show me how it's done.
Go on then, Frank.
Ready?
Yes.
Yes, Philippe!
Let's take.
So not only have I assisted Drogba, Kaka,
I've added Frank Lampard to that list now.
Nice.
So that drill there was, I feel like, a massive part of your game when you was playing.
Yeah.
How did you become so good at it?
Because you can't really train for a time, or can you?
I think you can definitely train the technique.
Yeah.
Like you're saying, I think we're talking about body over the ball.
When you're in close quarters,
technically spotting him was just like not power,
it's more like good contact, keeping your head over it, keeping it down.
That's how I always thought.
And in terms of timing, knowing your players,
so like the wingers that you're playing with regularly,
you're knowing that if they maybe a left foot on the right,
they won't want to cut back inside you and you hold your run for a second.
Yeah.
Or if it's a right foot, you know,
you're just going to go by someone and fly across.
You better get going quickly to get in there.
So you've got to know your players.
And then probably the last bit is about the defenders.
It's almost like I always look for that moment where a defender was like
watching the cross and they're watching there.
And then bam, you run then.
It's either like you're running off the back of them
or you run in to stop and make different movements to then finish.
It's all about trying to make space in the box.
Yeah.
I think probably with time you get more experience just the more you do it.
Yeah.
And you learn as you go.
Sweet, perfect.
All right, let's move on to the next drill.
Let's go.
OK, Phil, you ready?
Yeah.
Right, what I'm saying is you don't look at me.
Yeah.
You're just facing the goal.
So I want to send a little bit of reaction from you
when I'm going to play either down your right side.
Yeah.
Down here and then you're away or down your left side.
Sweet.
So there's a little bit of like off the mark thing.
And all I want to think about now is that you might be getting chased by,
I don't know, tops and a half.
OK.
So you haven't got time to go, yeah, touch, touch.
I'm going to do three stepovers.
It's more like, can I commit the keeper?
Or if I spot it early, can I just get a finish away?
I'm going to score.
OK.
Yeah.
Off you go.
Go, go, go.
Nice.
Am I allowed to run with it now?
You can.
Nice.
So that's exactly the beauty of these drills.
It's like you make it what you want.
OK.
Sometimes get your shot away, surprise him.
Other times go, right, I'm really going to go for him.
OK.
Try and commit him, out he comes.
Yes.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
Yeah.
Touch, commit.
Nice.
Yes, yes.
I like it.
Gotcha.
Top of one.
Angle.
Yeah.
No, I chipped you before though.
Get the clip off of me chipping him from the penalty spot again.
Yeah.
This one goes in there.
Yeah.
This one goes in.
Oh, he's taking his time.
This one goes in.
He's taking his time.
Oh, come on.
Realistically.
Yeah, never in a game am I getting that time.
I know we're having fun a little bit.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
But you did mug him off a little bit.
Here we go.
Yeah.
Nice.
See, I like that.
I know it's not right in the corner, but sometimes you just get your shot away.
Ready when you are, Gaff.
Yeah, here we go.
Come on.
Love that.
That finished there.
Can I say, right, see the beauty of that one?
Yeah.
I think the technique, as it's coming past you there,
I think when you make your mind up, you're going to get your shot away quickly,
which is perfect.
Yeah.
It's all about quick feet.
For me, when I'm going to shoot now, so it's like short feet and bam, like you did.
It's like when you end up stretching, that's when you end up a bit like out of control of it.
Yeah, yeah.
I think it's that one of, right, I'm going to get the shot away, short feet.
And then if I'm not, what's my perfect touch for the next one?
Because I want to commit him another time.
Sometimes it's almost like take it off the angle a little bit.
Then as you start coming towards me, I know that's open and I've got that.
And I've got that.
Nearly.
But do you know what I mean?
It's like the decision of quick feet, bam.
Well, is that touch?
One more touch to open up.
And then I'm closer.
Then I make my later decision.
It's like, do I beat him again or do I get another shot away at close quarters?
Two more.
Ready.
He's on his toes.
There it is.
Yeah, yeah.
Short feet.
I woke up.
See, the simple things are beautiful.
Tell all the young kids now.
The simple stuff is beautiful.
Short feet.
Session with Frank Lampard.
No one don't call my phone after this, man.
Last.
Go on.
Change the angle on it.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
And he's found me.
He's fuming.
You've got to remember, John's my mate off camera.
He is fuming right now.
All right, that's my turn done.
Now, Frank Lampard is going to show me how he does it.
I'm gaffer mode now.
On your toes, Frank.
On your toes.
I'm ready.
There you go.
Yep.
Yeah.
We're going for three.
I want three out of three from you, Frank.
We've got a big game this Saturday.
No problem.
Off you go.
Where is it?
Oh, the technique was brilliant.
Didn't trust my left.
In you come, Frank.
90th minute now.
This is to win the game.
Off you go.
Oh, the technique is brilliant.
And they have won this with a last minute winner.
Look at the state of John.
Unlucky, unlucky.
Not many can save that.
Well done, gaffer.
All right.
That's 1v1s done because I'm absolutely knackered.
Let's get the ball static and do some free kicks.
OK, so the last drill.
Free kicks.
Yeah.
Not very good at these.
I normally have my friend Chunks taking them.
Yeah, you know, I would take a few in my career,
but there were other players I played with who were much better than me.
But I think the main thing for me was about how you practice, like anything.
So what we've set up here, we've got a wall.
I'll move the wall.
So I would try from this angle, closer in, move the wall, move as you see fit.
And actually, when you're starting out, start closer.
You don't want to give yourself 30 yards.
And then it's about playing with a technique.
So it's like if I'm being shown that far in and I want to power it,
work on that technique.
And the ultimate technique for me is up and over, getting it down again.
So practice again.
Yeah, it's like you go from instep power and then you go, OK, side foot.
And then am I close enough to be able to get the power?
Am I far enough away to be able to get the up and down?
So playing with it is all you do.
David Luiz used to have that mad technique with the inside foot.
He used to hit this kind of like...
Yeah, it used to kind of hit the floor.
Yeah, Didier had a little bit of that.
David Luiz.
Yeah, so did Didier.
And it was strange and it was all worked on.
Like you see them in training.
It's no surprise.
You know what I mean?
They'll do that.
It was never that natural for me.
I was more of a power man.
But I'll try an up and down.
Yeah.
See if I've still got it.
Go on.
Caught the wall.
It's in though.
Oh John, the wall done you there.
They all count.
But you didn't hit it like that when you was playing, was you?
Did you?
No, not really.
I tried a few times and I normally hit the wall.
Here's a question.
Players that you've managed.
Who's had the best free kick?
Mason Mount scored a few for me.
At Derby and at Chelsea.
Willian.
Free kick.
Willian had a really good free kick.
Willian.
So Mason and Willian.
Mason and Willian I would say.
I'm going to take up my inner Mason for this one.
No.
You know who I really like now in the modern day is Madison.
No, he's brilliant.
His technique is a joke.
He's got that kind of a bit Beckham-esque.
Yeah.
He could just get it again and again and again.
Yeah, John.
Is it still in?
Come on, John, mate.
I've got to get one.
I'll be happy with one.
That's all I want.
One.
Philly, you wouldn't believe how many times you've got to miss
doing this to get better and score in games.
It's like part of the process.
Oh, that was looking good.
Already, yeah.
That was looking good.
I want one.
Oh, what a save.
What a save.
Not only was the free kick so good, but what a save.
No, what a save.
Credit where it's due.
What a save, John.
Too big, isn't he?
Yeah.
Too big.
Oh, it looked nice.
It looked nice.
It did.
Yeah, so there we have it.
The free kicks weren't as successful as the cross and drill or the 1v1s,
but I think it just goes to show how hard they actually are.
Yeah, I think anything with finishing,
like you've always got to practice when you've got a foul a little bit to succeed
because you don't know when you want to get better.
Free kicks can be the toughest
because you're trying to get up and down the wall to keep us,
as we saw there, amazing, making saves, reading where you're trying to put it.
So nothing wrong with it.
Keep practicing.
If you foul to succeed in the end.
I've been with absolutely amazing free kick takers.
They take and they miss, they get frustrated,
they get frustrated and then come the weekend,
up and down and they're scoring.
So it's part of it.
And you've got to bear in mind,
we're on the AstroTurf of about seven people in production.
They do it in a stadium full of 60,000,
sometimes one nil down.
They need that goal to make it count.
So yeah, credit to all the free kick takers out there in the world.
Anyway, with that being said, Frank, genuinely, it's been an absolute pleasure.
Massive, massive fan of you.
Amazing career you had.
So it's a bit surreal to be filming with you today.
With that being said, make sure you comment, like, subscribe.
Guys, take care.
God bless you.
See you later.
All right, God, I'm so unfit.
Me too.
All I do is play games, Frank.
I just stream every day in front of a computer.
