When the hurricane Epsilon swell arrived in Nazare, Portugal last week, 18-year-old professional surfer and local António Laureano was ready. Join António, along with an international crew of big wave surfing's elite, as they face the 'Swell of Century' in Nazare 2020: The Beast Awakens.
Four years ago when I came here for the first time, I was terrified.
It's a strong swell, massive.
31 feet.
Swells like this, there's always mixed feelings and emotions.
There's fear, anxiety.
I can't live without surfing.
My name is Antonio Laureano.
I'm 18 years old.
I'm a big wave rider from Nazareth.
My father, he started surfing big waves like 2007.
I was five years old, so I grew up in this world.
Tony's awesome.
I love Tony.
He's charging.
He's been charging out here since he was 13.
He's one of the main guys out there from Portugal and I'm very proud of him.
I wish him the best because he deserves it.
Surfing, it's a very mystical sport and you have to deserve the waves that you surf.
The swell for tomorrow, I hope to be really big.
I just want to catch one of the biggest waves of my life.
Tomorrow looks to be insane.
Forecasted to be huge tomorrow.
Hopefully the biggest waves in the world.
There's definitely a lot of energy in the ocean.
Somebody might ride a 100-foot wave.
I mean, that's the rumor, right?
Tomorrow is going to be amazing, I think.
It's going to come in overnight.
It'll peak probably three o'clock, but it should still be here in the morning.
And it's going to be big all day.
So, we are just watching the waves right now.
It's really big.
I think I never saw breaking so outside.
So, we are going to prepare everything to go to the water.
My name is Ramon Laureano.
I'm a Big Wave Rescue.
Today, I'm going to protect my son, António Laureano.
Today, we're going to work with a lot of safety and caution.
If we don't catch a big wave, at least we'll do the big waves safely.
If someone is going to give his life for António, it's the father.
So, that makes me feel more comfortable.
I pray, I pray a lot.
Not a lot of traveling due to the COVID pandemic.
And this is the first time I get to surf really big waves again.
And I'll admit, I was really nervous and scared to come back here.
You are just a little, little thing in this world.
I like this feeling to be surrounded by something way more powerful than you.
I've just got nothing to prove to myself.
It's just about enjoying it.
I want to enjoy it, you know.
It's nice to be in the water with guys that come all around the world.
It's amazing.
Every time I'm in Israel surfing,
I'm in danger because it's like it's nature and we can't control the nature.
