Mystique (born Raven Darkholme) is a mutant with the ability to shapeshift into anyone.
Little is known of Raven's life prior to her break-in into the Xavier Mansion. However, from what she revealed in X-Men and X-Men: The Last Stand, her early life was rather tragic. As a little child, her mutation was so abnormal to others that she feared going to school. Additionally, her parents, also fearful of her mutation, had at one point tried to kill her. Eventually, after years of abuse, Raven ran away.

Oh, look, you have itch from you, too.
Sorry, what?
Oh, look at her eye.
How's that for a magic trick?
Tough. I called it.
And I'm way more mysterious than you.
What about you?
You want society to accept you.
But you can't even accept yourself.
Mutant.
I'm proud.
How about now?
I prefer the real Raven.
I said the real Raven.
One second.
What's the matter, baby?
You don't think I look pretty like this?
You used to be a better shot.
Trust me, I still am.
He's all yours, Charles.
What about Logan?
You can transform.
That's not what they need.
We all do.
Forget everything you think you know.
Whatever lessons you learned in school.
Whatever your parents taught you.
None of that matters.
You're not kids anymore.
You're not students.
You're X-Men.
