In the calm and ancient surroundings of the palace,
Prince Abhaya approached the revered Buddha,
eager to understand the impact of the teacher's words.
Holding his precious infant son close,
the prince exuded a gentle fatherly tenderness
that filled the space with warmth.
It was in this serene atmosphere
that a meaningful conversation between the prince and the Buddha began,
unravelling profound insights about compassion
and the significance of speaking difficult truths.
The prince asked the Buddha,
Have you ever said anything that made someone feel unhappy?
The Buddha's gaze shifted toward the prince's child,
setting the stage for a contemplative scenario.
Imagine if your little one were to mistakenly put a stone in his delicate mouth,
what would you do?
the Buddha proposed.
Promptly recognising the potential danger,
Prince Abhaya affirmed,
I would act swiftly and remove the stone
even if it caused him some distress,
for the safety of my child is of utmost importance
and my heart is filled with deep compassion.
With a profound clarity,
the Buddha explained that his words often emanated from a place of profound compassion,
conveying truths that people needed to hear,
even if those truths caused them to experience unhappiness.
In response to the Buddha's explanation,
Prince Abhaya's expression softened,
reflecting a newfound understanding.
Grasping the depth of the lesson,
he nodded thoughtfully,
acknowledging the delicate balance between compassion
and the necessity of conveying difficult truths.
This exchange highlighted the essential moral
that genuine compassion sometimes entails
conveying challenging truths for the greater good,
transcending momentary unease
to foster enduring understanding and growth.
