Hello, my name is Martin, 22 years old, and I'm from Slovakia.
Right now, I came here to see the Onigawara tiles.
What is it? Let's check it out!
Onigawara tiles are used as protections or to protect home from evil.
Before 1000 years, there was Onigawara being made,
and it was right here in Tochigi prefecture.
This thing is made of steel, as I heard, and it's interesting because it's handmade.
You can see that it's very special.
To finish the Onigawara tile, it's a month to create it and 7 days to fire it.
It takes a lot of time.
When you see the shape, it's the waves and clouds,
because it resembles water, which is a good omen,
because it protects the house before the fire.
It's very interesting.
I thought the Onigawara is only ogre tiles, but actually I was wrong,
and there are various shapes of the tiles.
For example, the one that resembles water.
Thank you.
At first I need to put this, some kind of floor, I think, to grab some mud.
Oh, it's sticky.
It is cold, actually, but it's more sticky than I thought.
So I need to do it with my palm.
Like this?
With my fingertips.
It's better.
And I finished it.
Really scary.
I just heard that one Onigawara that Mr. Yamagami has made
is also in the Japanese sweet shop just near.
So let's go there.
Thank you, Mr. Yamagami.
Thank you very much for today.
And see you. Bye.
So this is it.
This is the Onigawara that Mr. Yamagami has made.
As you can see, there are waves, water and clouds,
and in the middle there is a manju, the Japanese sweet.
As you can see, Onigawara is not only for the decoration of the roof,
but it can also be placed in the middle of the house.
Today was a very good day, I enjoyed it very much.
Interesting part of the experience was also to make my own Onigawara.
That was hard.
Also, what was new for me is that Onigawara is not only ogre faces,
but also water and things that can protect the house.
So have a nice trip.
Today's Japanese of the day is Shokunin, craftsman.
