Hi guys!
Today we are going to learn about the most interesting and diverse continent on Earth.
Africa!
As you know, this is Earth.
And this is the map of the world.
Everything that looks blue is water.
And the other part is land.
Each country in the world has a flag and a place on our planet.
There are seven continents in the world.
You live on one of those continents.
But do you know which continent is the hottest?
Yes! Africa!
Located between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Now, let's learn interesting things about Africa.
The first thing is that if you look at the map, you can see that up to the north of Africa is covered by desert.
It is the largest desert in the world.
The Sahara or also known as the Sahara.
To the east we can find the Nile River.
The longest river in the world.
Starting in Lake Victoria, the Nile crosses 11 countries.
It flows towards the Mediterranean Sea and supplies water to these countries.
We also find the highest mountain on the continent.
Kilimanjaro, which is made up of three inactive volcanoes.
And it can be found in Tanzania.
And in the Indian Ocean is the largest island in Africa.
Madagascar!
Yes, the one in the movie.
In addition to all this, it is very important to know that Africa has 54 countries.
More than any of the other continents.
Some of the most important countries in Africa are South Africa, where you can find the Mountain of the Mass.
Egypt, famous for its pyramids.
Morocco, known for its markets, deserts and mountains.
Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, where we find the Congo jungle.
Ethiopia, Kenya, where you can find the Masai Mara National Park, known for its safaris.
Namibia, Nigeria, Mali and other countries.
Each of these countries has its language.
Manuel, how many languages are there?
There are 1,500 languages in Africa.
The most important are Arabic, French and English.
And there are a lot of very colorful typical costumes.
Jaime, what are you wearing?
What I'm wearing is a typical African costume.
Surely when you think of Africa, the first thing you think of is...
Yes, animals!
But animals and plants are born in different spaces, called ecosystems.
Africa has three main ecosystems.
The desert, the savannah and the rainforest.
In Africa, there are two main deserts.
The Sahara Desert and the Kalahari Desert.
As we mentioned, the Sahara Desert is the largest in the world and covers at least 10 African countries.
The Sahara Desert is the hottest region in the world, where the rain is very rare.
Much of the Sahara Desert's surface is rocky.
In some places, the sand piles up on hills that we call dunes.
And in other places, there is a water supply known as an oasis.
As you can see on the map, in South Africa we find the Kalahari Desert.
This is where we can find the largest diamond mines in the world.
The desert animals include camels,
suricates,
hyenas,
African gazelles,
the adax, which is a large white antelope that can spend almost a year without drinking,
the Sahara's silver ant,
the yellow scorpion, which can measure 10 centimeters in length,
and its venom is very dangerous.
Dromedaries and goats are the most used domestic animals by nomads.
Nomads are people who move from one place to another because they don't have a permanent home.
In the Sahara, we can find the Tuareg tribe.
The Tuareg have been called the blue people because of the blue clothes they wear and the way they stain their skin.
They raise camels, sheep and goats.
Now let's talk about the savannas.
The savannas are dry areas between jungles and semi-deserts.
Spaces with small and scattered trees,
among which the Baobab stands out,
a majestic tree with a thick trunk, called the tree of life.
Most savannas receive enough rain to maintain the forest.
But the forest never happens because something prevents the trees from growing.
These can be animals that graze and knock down trees like elephants or fires.
Some herbivorous savanna animals are
the African elephant, as shown by Carlos,
which is the largest animal on Earth,
the giraffe, which is the tallest animal in the world,
Alberto, Álvaro, Marcos, Claudia and Inés share with the giraffes,
Beltrán and Juan with the zebra,
Álvaro with the African bison,
and Carlota with an ostrich.
Carnivorous savanna animals are
the lion, as shown by Javier.
Guille, how does the lion do?
And you, Pedro, what do you have there?
I have a cheetah.
The cheetah is the fastest land animal in the world.
We also find jackals and wild dogs.
The African savanna is the land where the Maasai tribe lives.
The Maasai are very tall people.
Both men and women wear earrings.
The Maasai wear colored blankets.
Most of the blankets are red, orange and black, as shown by Luisa.
The Maasai are known for their traditional dances
and they dance jumping from top to bottom, as Lucia shows us.
African musical traditions are often based on percussion instruments
of many varieties, including xylophones, djembe, drums.
Lucas shows us one of the instruments used by the tribes, the marimba.
And Alba shows us typical African craftsmanship.
Now let's talk about the last of Africa's ecosystems, the tropical jungle.
The Congo jungle is the second largest on the planet.
It is the third largest after the Amazon.
A tropical jungle is a wet forest of very tall trees.
The Congo jungle is famous for its variety of species,
such as chimpanzees, gorillas, hippos, tigers, elephants,
although they are smaller than savanna elephants.
The Okapi, or giraffe of the forest, is another fascinating resident of the Congo.
It has stripes like a zebra, but it is more related to the giraffe,
although its neck is not so long.
In addition, deep in Kenya, the Zamburu tribe lives,
a tribe of colorful, strong and brave people who have survived in the jungle
despite the constant threat of drought and dangerous wildlife.
Both men and women wear jewelry and use many necklaces, earrings and colored bracelets.
The Zamburu also paint their faces with striking patterns
to accentuate their facial features, as Alejandro shows us.
And they dance to the rhythm of their traditional music,
as Marta shows us with this popular South African song.
We hope you liked it and learned a lot about this wonderful continent.
