Take two minutes to watch this video & stop stress in its tracks!
The start of the school year can be so exciting. Back to friends, to a routine,
to learning new things, and to early bedtime. But the back to school season can also be
stressful to kids and parents alike. As a matter of fact, even the most easygoing people can get
a little anxious around that time, especially for those entering a transition year, a new school,
or if there's been a change in the child support system. These worries can fade with time,
and the more you support your child through them, the easier the transition can be.
Here are some tips to help guide you and your child towards a successful transition.
First, pulse check. Stress can be contagious. Shifting back to a different routine,
bedtime negotiations, drop-off drama, and of course, homework can all add pressure on parents
too. Stress can be unknowingly passed on to children. It's natural to feel frustrated when
your child feels frustrated. Try to step away from the situation briefly. Take a deep breath,
and remember that a child's behavior might be stemming from anxiety.
Model the behavior you'd like to see. Second, approach anxiety instead of avoiding it.
Phrases like, nothing to worry about, and you'll be fine, can actually reinforce anxiety in the
long term. Instead, validate your child's feelings and ask if they need your help to think through
ways to approach, rather than dismiss their worries. Those head and stomach aches can
actually be anxiety. Third, reinforce good sleep habits. This can help make mornings easier.
Lastly, ask for help. If you know your child suffers from anxiety generally, it's helpful to
inform the school staff. This can help them anticipate and support your child's needs,
ensuring a successful transition. All that to say, if you're experiencing some back-to-school
jitters or anxiety, remember, you're not alone in this. We wish you all a great new school year.
