Lars Mittam, a 28-year-old German tourist, traveled with friends to the popular Bulgarian holiday destination Golden Sands to enjoy a week of sun, relaxation and fun. But what started out as an ordinary vacation quickly turned into something much more mysterious. On July 8th, Lars arrived at Varna Airport in Bulgaria and wanted to fly back to Germany. But within a few minutes something changed. Lars ran out of the airport without his belongings and disappeared into a nearby forest. The security cameras recorded his desperate escape, but since then every trace of Lars Mittam is missing. What could have driven him to flee in such a panic? Was it paranoia, a psychotic breakdown or something even more disturbing? Lars, who was born in Wilhelmshaven, worked in a local power plant, liked to play football and had a close circle of friends. When in June 2014 there was an opportunity for a summer vacation in the Bulgarian holiday destination Golden Sands, Lars seized the opportunity to join his friends. Golden Sands is located near the coastal city of Varna and is known for its beautiful beaches, the lovely nightlife and as a hotspot for European tourists. For Lars and his friends it was supposed to be a week full of relaxation and fun. But when the vacation came to an end, things took a sudden and frightening turn. On the penultimate day of their trip, Lars and his friends went to a local bar, where they had a short discussion with a group of German football fans. The reports vary, but it is assumed that the tensions rose and led to a dispute over football teams. Later in the night, Lars parted from his friends and disappeared for the evening. When he returned the next morning, he had a disturbing story to tell. He claimed to have been attacked and beaten by a group of men, who were possibly hired by those involved in the beating. Lars was visibly injured and had a fractured drum skin and a jaw injury. Despite the severity of his injuries, he initially refused to go for medical treatment. However, when the pain became too strong, he finally contacted a doctor on site, who prescribed him antibiotics and advised him against flying, as the injured drum skin could be under pressure during flights. This was the moment when Lars' situation began to relax. While his friends were returning to Germany by plane, Lars was forced to stay in Varna to recover. He booked a hotel near the airport and waited for his injuries to heal, so that he could fly home safely. But while he was alone, Lars' behavior began to change dramatically. His once calm behavior became unpredictable and paranoid. Lars called his mother, Sandra Mittank, several times during his stay at the hotel. In these calls, he expressed increasing fear and told her that he believed He asked her to cancel his credit cards and said that he no longer felt safe in Bulgaria. Once he even claimed that they tried to drug him. Video recordings from the hotel show that Lars behaves suspiciously in the corridors. In a clip you can see how he opens and closes the corridors and looks out of the windows, as if he were expecting to see someone outside. Later, in the middle of the night, he flees from the hotel to return hours later. His behavior became more and more bizarre and everyone who saw him could not overlook the fear in his eyes. Lars' mother was increasingly worried. Although it was clear that something was not quite right, she could do little from Germany. She advised him to go to the airport and return home as soon as possible. But the last stage of Lars' journey should prove to be the most mysterious and tragic part of his story. On July 8, 2014, Lars arrived at Varna Airport early in the morning to start his return flight to Germany. Before he could check in, Lars searched the airport's medical office to undergo a final examination and make sure that the flight was suitable. The medical doctor, Kosta Kostov, later reported that Lars seemed restless and anxious during the examination. During the examination, a construction worker entered the office. This was the moment when Lars' paranoia reached its peak. According to Dr. Kostov, the construction worker's gaze triggered a panic response. He should have screamed, I don't want to die here, I have to get out of here. In a fit of fear, Lars fell out of the office and left his luggage, passport and other belongings behind. The airport's security cameras recorded his rapid escape. Lars ran through the terminal, fell out of the exit and sprinted across the airport grounds before disappearing in the nearby forest. This was Lars' last confirmed sighting. He disappeared without a trace. A large-scale search followed. The Bulgarian police searched the area around the airport, forests and nearby fields, but no trace of Lars was found. His family, which desperately sought answers, launched a public campaign to find him, distributed missing posters all over Europe and appealed to anyone who might have seen him. Despite these efforts, Lars Mittank remains missing to this day. The bizarre circumstances of Lars' disappearance have caused a multitude of theories, both by investigators and by amateur detectives on the Internet. One of the most common theories states that Lars suffered a psychotic episode, probably caused by the injuries he suffered during the attack, or by an already existing mental disorder. His sudden paranoia, his unpredictable behavior and his claims that he was being followed by people correspond to the symptoms of a psychosis. Some have speculated that the antibiotics that Lars was prescribed could have contributed to his mental breakdown. Dr. Kostov, however, later revealed that Lars never initiated the prescription for the antibiotics, which excludes a direct connection with the drugs. Others believe that the injuries of Lars, especially the head trauma and the torn skin, could have triggered a mental disorder such as schizophrenia, which had not been diagnosed before. This could explain the rapid deterioration of his mental state and his growing feeling of fear and paranoia in the days before his disappearance. There are also more bizarre theories. Some Internet spies suspect that Lars was involved in criminal activities such as drug smuggling and that he fled from dangerous people. However, there is no concrete evidence for these claims. The report of the German truck driver, who took Lars from Dresden to Brandenburg, also contributed to the mystery, but the trace was lost in the sand. Without further evidence, it is impossible to say with certainty what happened to Lars Mittank. His case remains unsolved, and until he is found or his remains are discovered, the truth will remain a mystery. The disappearance of Lars Mittank is still a mystery for everyone who followed the case.
