So contrary to popular belief, the limb you're looking for is not spruce. It's balsam. Spruce is very very prickly. You can't do this with a spruce tree. You can with a balsam though. It looks very similar, but if you can run your hand down it like this, it's a balsam. You will not be able to do that with a spruce. I guarantee you that.
