Fighter aircraft is becoming more and more advanced each day, but there are a few that
stand out from the rest. From the recently unveiled stealth Russian fighter jets,
to American aircraft that can cost $339 million each. Here are 12 Most Insane Fighter Aircraft.
Number 12. The Mikoyan-31. A larger, more durable aircraft than the F-16,
the Mikoyan is developed by the Russians as a part of a program to develop air superiority
over the West and NATO. A prototype of this aircraft first flew in 1975, and in 1979,
it entered military service. Its advanced radar system can allow it to track up to 10 targets at
a time and has the potential to shoot down four of those targets at once. The advanced radar has
continued to improve with the addition of digital processors. There is an estimated 300 of these
fighter planes currently in service and have formed the backbone of the Russian Air Force.
Even decades later, their objective is to destroy cruise missiles, helicopters, UAVs,
escort strategic bombers, and provide quality air defense.
Number 11. F-16 Fighter Falcon. This light, inexpensive alternative to the F-15 Eagle
is capable of attacking both air and ground targets with much efficiency.
It's been used often in a large number of conflicts through the years,
and over 4,500 of them have been constructed. Due to its relative simplicity to produce,
it's been a fairly common export to 26 different countries around the world and used by countries
like Israel, South Korea, Singapore, Turkey, and Greece to name a few. With a few upgrades,
it's easy to make this more discreet during covert operations. It measures in at 15 meters long with
a 10-meter wingspan. The turbofan engine allows it to reach speeds of about 1,500 miles per hour.
The 20-millimeter cannon and the arsenal of air-to-air missiles makes it a force to reckon
with in the skies. Number 10. The F-15 Eagle. This premier fighting aircraft from the USA
has been in service for about 30 years now and still undefeated in the skies.
The majority of the confirmed kills have come from the Israeli Air Force who have mastered this
powerful jet. These are often deployed by the US National Guard when they detect a threat on
the home soil. The Air Force uses the more updated version of the F-15 and have roughly 500 on active
duty. The fighters have only been exported to the USA's most trusted allies due to their
destructive capabilities. The 20-millimeter cannons have room for 940 rounds of ammunition.
These are also equipped with electronic warfare equipment such as infrared search and track
systems. With the upgrades and the effectiveness, it's hard to see these not being put to use at
least until the year 2025. Many varieties exist of the F-15 depending on the main objective and
where it's being manufactured. Number 9. Su-35. Development of the Su-35 began in the 1980s and
eventually flew in 1988. The Su-35 Russian-built fighter jet made significant advancements from
its predecessor, the Su-27, that's improved its aerodynamics, range, engine, and construction
methods. According to some sources, there are currently 36 of these fighter jets in operation.
It reached an impressive max speed of 1485 miles per hour. The reinforced frames include titanium
alloys which increase its durability while decreasing its weight. Its wingspan reaches 15
meters and the length measures at 21.9. Its powerful radar jamming capabilities can pretty
much make it invisible to enemy planes and the 30-millimeter cannons will certainly do some
serious damage to any other plane. With its ability to carry over 11 tons of fuel, it can fly an
estimated 2,236 miles without a pit stop. Number 8. The Eurofighter Typhoon. One of NATO's go-to
defense fighter planes, this small lightweight aircraft was developed in 1986 by numerous
European countries. It features ground attack capabilities, laser and radar warning elements,
and gives radar decoys to enemy radar systems. The cost of mass-producing this fighter was split
between Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK in 1988 while others were exported to Saudi Arabia. France
was initially in on the deal but due to disputes on the design, they decided to go with the Dassault
Raphael which we'll get to later. It reaches a max speed of 1320 miles an hour and uses the
Paveway 3 laser-guided bombs to take out land targets. The highly agile machine consists of
carbon fiber materials with a lifespan of about 6,000 flying hours. Here you see the cockpit
designed for one of the pilots and it's controlled by the center stick. Number 7. The JAS Gripen.
This light, single-engine aircraft is manufactured by the Swedish company Saab
who is also known for manufacturing automobiles and is used by the Swedish Air Force. Other
countries such as South Africa, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Finland have a few of these
in their arsenal as well after Saab formed a partnership with BAE in 2001. The Swedish people
complained that it ate up too much funding after a couple crashes early on in the testing phase
but it's turned out to be a staple unit in their air force. The JAS Gripen is praised for its
lightweight design, agile movements, high speeds, and short takeoff distance. The JAS hit a speed of
1370 miles an hour at a high altitude which is the fastest speed recorded for this fighter. It's
equipped with a large variety of missiles which can be used to sink ships as well as laser-guided
bombs which will strike down targets with precision. Some may argue that the Gripen is one of
the most powerful and most well-rounded fighter jets out there which is effective in just about
any situation. Number 6. The Boeing Super Hornet. Currently in service with the Royal Australian
Air Force and the U.S. Navy, the Boeing Super Hornet is relatively a new aircraft that can carry
quite the arsenal of weapons. Each one is equipped with an internal 20 millimeter rotary cannon as
well as a large variety of air-to-air missiles. This was ordered by the U.S. Navy in 1992 and
were thoroughly tested until 1995 to ensure that it was up to their standards. It passed with flying
colors and recently it's been equipped with top-of-the-line infrared search and tracking sensors.
The AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles are undetectable by enemy radar making this a smooth fighter to
have on our team. Number 5. The Chengdu J-20. China also has some pretty good fighters up their
sleeve as well especially the J-20. This is China's new fighter that has similarities to Russian and
American designs. Low production of this fighter began in 2015 due to its high price and they were
eventually given to the Chinese Air Force for active duty. Due to China's secrecy with their
military program, there's not a ton of specific information on this aircraft. It's known that it
does have a fairly large fuel tank however. Other sources claim that China still doesn't possess the
technology for complete stealth from showing up on enemy radar and no one really knows for sure
what engine is under the hood. It is believed however that Russia might have helped in assisting
China get a hold of stealth fighter technology. Number 4. Dassault Rafale. This advanced aircraft
can pack a lot of punch for its small size compared to some of the others on this list.
Its capabilities were first demonstrated in July 1986 and it's been valued for its aerodynamic
design and control system. It features some of Europe's most advanced avionics systems which
includes technologies like a two-plane electronic scanning system which makes L'Armée de l'Air a
force to reckon with. This radar system enhances reliability, increases detection ranges, fully
targets and tracks multiple enemy planes, and allows high resolutions of nearby images. The
one-man crew is equipped with a state-of-the-art helmet with sights and displays. Its reduced size
allows it to comfortably fit on aircraft carriers and increases its stealth abilities. They've also
been proven in battle, seen combat in places like Libya, Mali, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.
Number 3. The Lockheed Martin F-35. Also known as the Lightning II, this aircraft is currently in
use by the United States Marine Corps Air Force and the U.S. is planning on exporting these to
many other countries in the near future. It was designed with the intent to someday replace the
F-16 fighters that are most commonly deployed. This is slightly smaller than an F-22 design and
only has one engine. It might get called upon to do some close air support, air defense missions,
and even tactical bombing. It uses stealth technology to stay off enemy radar and is
prized for the short amount of space needed to take off and land. This makes it ideal to
eventually be stationed on aircraft carriers someday in the future. With the U.S. Air Force
developing some new shocking state-of-the-art aircraft, it's led to some rumors getting
floated around online. The image you see here was thought to be a new experimental aircraft known as
the F-37, but in reality it's just a clip from a film known as Stealth. Although it's a fictional
film, it was filmed on a real U.S. aircraft carrier called the USS George Washington. It
makes you wonder if they used some inspiration from the F-35 when coming up with this fictional
design. Number 2. The Sukhoi Su-57. Due to some of America's advancing aircraft, the Russian have
built their own super fighter plane that is starting to look like it's going to control the
skies. With Russia having quality missile programs, you better believe that this aircraft can actually
shoot down enemy targets as far away as 124 miles. This is one of Russia's newest 5th generation
stealth fighters, which is highly maneuverable, can carry 10 tons of weight, and also has low
visibility because of its stealth technologies. Reaching speeds of 1,600 miles an hour and
looking quite smooth, it glides through the sky without having to spend trillions of dollars.
Its range maxes out at 3,500 miles, but it always gets refueled in mid-air if it has to.
Although it hasn't been battlefield proven just yet, Russian officials are praising its potential
to compete with other superpowers such as the U.S. Number 1. The F-22 Raptor. This U.S. fighter
almost has complete stealth against enemy radar and carries a vicious arsenal of weapons on board.
It's possibly the most advanced and most expensive fighter aircraft on the planet.
Much of the equipment is classified, but the engines allow it to cruise extremely long ranges
and it's highly maneuverable. Air superiority was the number one goal when designing this
fighting machine. Many claim that it's completely unmatched on many different
categories of other fighters. Some of these have been recently moved to places like Estonia and
Germany in order to keep NATO territory secure. They recently have seen combat time in Syria,
and they intercepted two other fighter jets just above the city of Hasakah. These things get off
the ground in a hurry and are capable of a vertical takeoff almost like a rocket ship.
This certainly helps it make it one of the most advanced fighter planes out there. It would be
one heck of a show to see an F-22 Raptor take on a Sukhoi Su-57. Russians might say that Americans
are paying far too much for this, with the price tag at $339 million each. Apparently, the fighter
has radar-absorbing metallic skin, which requires a bit of maintenance. There have been a few
reported crashes like this one in the photo, but the pilot ejected safely and it seems as though
it might almost be a challenge to maintain this complex fighter.
