According to the UK Kettle Club, Lord Zenblow is considered the founder of the breed of
golden cobras, consequence of the crossing of the smooth-haired cobra with the Twit Water Spaniel.
Curiously, the fruit of both breeds turned out to be a light-skinned dog.
Later, other breeds were added to the bloodline, such as the Bloodhound, the Irish Setter
and other lost dogs.
The breed was known as the Yellow Retriever or Gold Retriever in 1913 and the official name
was modified in 1920, when it was finally named Golden Retriever.
The Golden is a medium-sized large dog, with a slightly longer body than tall and a dense
and beautiful golden coat that characterizes it.
Overall, the appearance of the Golden Retriever is that of a harmonious dog, well-proportioned,
powerful, active and of balanced movements.
There are some differences between the standards of the breed followed by the American Kettle Club
and the Kettle Club of the United Kingdom, however, in both we highlight the dark eyes
and the double-layered golden coat, while the external hair, on the other hand, is smooth
or wavy and firm, the inner coat is dense and waterproof.
A variety of golden tones are admitted for the Golden Retriever, ranging from gold to
cream.
However, the extremes such as pure white or red are not accepted.
The stable and gentle temperament of the Golden Retriever is one of the main characteristics
of the breed and perhaps the one that has given it the most popularity.
These dogs are patient, intelligent, easy to train and very dynamic.
These qualities make them excellent assistance, work, therapy and company dogs.
Golden Retrievers take a long time to mature, being necessary about 3 years or a little more
to develop their definitive character.
In addition, they are still very playful, even when they are adults, so they are very appreciated
by families with children.
Finally, we want to remember their tendency to be sociable with dogs and people, as well
as the natural instincts of hunting and swimming.
With this breed, it is very important to keep the food rations in relation to the amount
of exercise the dog does, since Golden Retrievers tend to obesity.
The brushing of these dogs must be done frequently, with a brush of metal bristles.
You must brush your Golden at least once a day because these dogs lose a lot of hair,
as well as easily get tangled.
We can bathe it every month and a half and even every two months, but we should never
abuse an excessive bath.
The ideal is to wait for it to be dirty.
Golden Retrievers are dogs that need a lot of affection and company.
They are not dogs to live isolated in the garden, but they must be part of the family.
In addition, Golden Retrievers need to do a lot of exercise every day, since they are
very active dogs.
We recommend doing about three walks a day combined with exercise, either through
ball games, frisbee or agility, for example.
The Golden Retriever is considered the fourth most intelligent dog according to Stanley
Coren.
Regardless of this, the truth is that the breed is really intelligent, so it will not
cost us to work on the education and training of this dog.
In its puppy stage, the Golden Retriever will have to learn to urinate in the soapers,
to later learn to urinate outside.
It will also be time to mentally stimulate it and allow it to develop its teeth
through toys.
It is also time to start with some basic orders, such as sitting, lying down or coming
here.
Later, in its adult stage, we will work more regularly on basic obedience.
But we can also start performing canine skills, tricks or various exercises that
allow it to feel mentally stimulated.
All this must be done through the use of positive reinforcement.
Any dog should go to the vet on a regular basis to quickly identify the appearance
of any disease.
In puppies and elderly dogs, the average time should be around 6 months.
But in adult dogs, visits can be annual.
It will also be necessary to follow the vaccination calendar and internal and external
de-parasitization of the dog.
The most common diseases of the Golden Retriever are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia,
obesity, overweight, cancer, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy.
If we take care of it and we are attentive to its good health, the Golden Retriever can
happily accompany us between 10 and 13 years.
