The kitten ran away again! _There was a cat who helped me escape! !
In the garden behind me is a really rare bird but I had a bit of a moral dilemma about whether I was
going to come and see it and whether I was going to share it with you but first let's take a look
at it. A suburban front garden in central Norfolk is a very unusual place to spot an exotic and rare
visitor to the UK. This is a Eurasian hoopoe which would normally spend the spring and summer
In the autumn they usually migrate southwards into southern Europe, north and central Africa,
India and southeast Asia. So what is it doing here, thousands of miles from where it would
normally be? Every year, usually in the springtime, a very small number turn up in the UK
after overshooting Spain on their way northwards. But it's October so this bird must have simply
made a mistake and started flying west instead of southwards whilst trying to get to its
wintering grounds. Hoopoes mostly feed on small insects, sometimes also eating amphibians and
reptiles but all of these are in short supply here during the colder months so it's likely
this bird will soon realise its miscalculation and hopefully set off once more. This is my first
time seeing one in the flesh and from photos I was expecting it to be bigger but they're actually
around the size of a large black bird. Over most of their bodies they're a cinnamon colour with
black and white barred wings and a long down curved bill. Their most striking feature is a
crest of feathers on top of their heads which is usually held backwards but can be flared to
display a black and white mohawk just like this. You might be wondering where they get their name
from and it has nothing to do with poo. Hoopoes are named after their call which sounds like
So why was that a moral dilemma I hear you ask and the reason is with there being so few of these
birds visiting the UK lots of people come to visit and it's already made a really long flight
and a lot of people staring at it can put extra pressure on the bird but from photos over the last
couple of days I can see that it's feeding well and doesn't seem to be put off by all the people
standing there watching it so I'm happy to share it with you. Now if you did enjoy this video check
out the one that's on the screen for more probably more common wildlife. Thanks for watching and I'll
see you next time.
